Quoting an old post from this thread:

LP stands for "Let's Play", which stands for playing through a game, and then sharing that with the internet somehow, usually through a forum thread. There are screenshot lp's (SSLP), video LP's (VLP) and mixes of both, called hybrid LP's. For more info check out:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=191
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2725735

There are other places that have LP's to, but AFAIK it all started on the somethingawful forums, and i post there anyway. I have actually done a couple of LP's there:

http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Final%20Fantasy%20Adventure/ - Final Fantasy Adventure / Mystiq Quest
http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/SGnG/ - Super Ghouls & Ghosts, Ghosts & Goblins (arcade), Gargoyles Quest & Gargoyles quest II
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2726964 - Hard Truck Apocalypse and HTA: rise of the clans
I also had a thread with random snes games, but dont have a link to that anymore, its found in the bowels of google video if you really want to see them.

Check out the Arcade Ghosts and Goblins video. SGNG is easy compared to that damn game. Just thinking about it still pisses me off.

Anyway here's another bonus. I cant figure out how to get the fort to fit on the map upload site as i said earlier, but i can just upload my entire fortress files. So i did. They're completely prepacked so you can run them and it will have the tileset and all the settings i used.

If you're bored, try the new Orc Mod.

You may need more than just traps though...

do they just send that many?
Edit: ah, they're immune like kobolds. Well, if I had a longer time to prepare I'd still be able to use lava but I don't think there's really an option besides waiting for them to leave for the first few times.

Just posting in appreciation of captain_duck's tutorials. I have played this game in the past and I gave up due to the relatively steep initial learning curve, but now I have a fully functioning home in the side of a mountain :) Your tutorials are clear and definitely got me started on the right track.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the tutorial, it has really helped me. I'm only at episode 20 or so, but there's a lot of tips and pointers to be had, although sometimes it can be a bit hard to see exactly which part of the map you're showing. I guess that can't really be helped, though, since it's mainly due to the fact that the map has layers.

Anyway, I have some basic questions that I didn't see answered in the tutorial (the parts I've watched so far, anyway):

1) How do you let an animal out of a cage? I've bought some cows and horses, and I want them to breed.

2) What does the colours in the units screen and military screen mean? Do they have something to do with the
skill or mood or the dwarves?

Edit: 3) Also, I'm playing my first magma game, and I've just struck a warm stone during my excavations. I was expecting this would reveal the magma pipe, but it didn't. How did you make it visible in your game?

You should probably ask any more questions in a separate thread, where they're more likely to be seen. With that said:

1) Place the cage with b-j. You can press x to get expanded list to find the horse or goblin or whatever cage you're looking for. Then once the cage has been built, press q and hover over the cage. Press a to enter assign mode, and enter to de-assign the animal from the cage. Someone will come along and let it out.

You might as well leave the cage built, since you'll need it to hold your kittens and other animal babies eventually. You can put any animal in the fortress in a cage from the assign menu, and a single cage can hold as many animals as you like.

2) They're the "field" that the unit has their highest skill(s) in. Fields are things like Woodworker, Administrator and so on. There's a full list with the colours they mean here. You'll also notice some correlation between the dwarf's job title and their specialist field, if they have one.

3) Afaik you need to actually breach a hole into the magma for it to reveal the pipe. Obviously you're going to need to be careful about safety while doing that ;)

Thanks for the answers. You're probably right that it would have made more sense to ask in a seperate thread, but the OP did ask if there was anything else a new player should know (although I guess that was a while ago, and he's probably not likely to redo the tutorials at this point anyway :)).

In the z menu you can see a list of all of the colors of units/military with word of what those mean- or in picture format if you have graphics installed.
