Dwarf Fortress Video Tutorial ***NEW 2015 SERIES***
« on: December 11, 2008, 02:49:23 pm »

Update 2015 evennewerish:

Oh god, i forgot this thread existed, looks like i didn't even post my 2012 series here. Anyway i'm working on a 2015 series now, check it out here:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0sBhCMFBvPlF7wG7OH-NFQKMeCQiS8aM

I post all the new videos on my youtube channel, so subscribe to that if you want to keep up to date with the vids. https://www.youtube.com/user/captnduck/

I've also made a new Play Along Edition: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=10552
There's also an update to my DFVIDTUTS embark profile, you can find that in the DF starter pack: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126076

Also, i have a patreon page, where i'm trying to raise some money for a more stable income, check that out here: https://www.patreon.com/DFVIDTUTS

=====

Update 2011 newerish:

I started a new Dwarf Fortress Let's Play! Id figure id post it here to since i posted all my old vids here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQXnVy6Nd_c

I also uploaded a Play Along Edition here:

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5168

=====

Update 2011: So i made a new DF video at last. My plan was to make one video with all the basics of DF so a new player could start by only watching that video.

It ended up feature length... two and a half hours:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn1iW1QN7_s

=====
Update 2010:
It's 2010 and there is a new version of Dwarf Fortress out. Since this changed a lot of things about the game, they make some of my old video's outdated, and thats why i have decided to make a new series of DFVIDTUTS for DF2010. Here are the video's i have made so far:

Original:
Hey guys. I've been working on a dwarf fortress video tutorial, and i figured i might as well post it here to on the official home of DF. I started one because well, i would have liked one when i started with the game. There is like two small videos on youtube which don't explain much so im taking matters into my own hands here :). I think the game needs it. It took me like 3 years (with playing the game like once a year) to finally make a fortress that can survive sieges.

These video tutorials aren't really a high quality production, I'm from the netherlands so my english isn't perfect, but i think i get the message across. The subtitles help with this to, they are great for showing the keys you need to learn and for stuff i forget in the videos.

So without further ado, here are the videos:
(Youtube HD works good, but gamevee has an even higher quality then youtube)

I'm playing the game with tilesets and graphics because it makes the game make much more sense. Im using the Guybrush 16x16 tileset, Dystopian Rhetoric's graphics set, and an updated color scheme.

You can find the game releases on this page: http://dffd.wimbli.com/category.php?id=18
This page also has prepacked versions with tilesets already installed.

Fort 1 is using : "Dwarf Fortress v0.28.181.39e Graphical Repack (PC)"
Fort 2 is using : Dwarf Fortress v0.28.181.40d9, with the tileset installed myself.

For playing yourself i recommend this: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=839 , 40d9 with the mike mayday tileset.

Since the fortress is over, i uploaded my fort to the internet, ready for you guys to download. It's prepacked so no installing should be necessary.

Demonbutter: Megaupload - Mediafire
Breakfastgears: Megaupload - Mediafire

Anyway please post any suggestions you guys might have. What are the problems you really ran into when you started playing? Whats are some things that every new player should know?

Also, thank you toady for making this fantastic game. I wouldn't be doing this if the game didn't have so much potential and depth
And thanks to everyone who worked on the dwarf fortress wiki. I reference it often in the videos and without it this game would have been unplayable for me.

Addendum:
Want to see more of my old stuff? Read this:

what is an LP ? or SSLP.

i have no clue ^_^

LP stands for "Let's Play", which stands for playing through a game, and then sharing that with the internet somehow, usually through a forum thread. There are screenshot lp's (SSLP), video LP's (VLP) and mixes of both, called hybrid LP's. For more info check out:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=191
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2725735

There are other places that have LP's to, but AFAIK it all started on the somethingawful forums, and i post there anyway. I have actually done a couple of LP's there:

http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Final%20Fantasy%20Adventure/ - Final Fantasy Adventure / Mystiq Quest
http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/SGnG/ - Super Ghouls & Ghosts, Ghosts & Goblins (arcade), Gargoyles Quest & Gargoyles quest II
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2726964 - Hard Truck Apocalypse and HTA: rise of the clans
I also had a thread with random snes games, but dont have a link to that anymore, its found in the bowels of google video if you really want to see them.

Nice job, we needed some good tutorial videos. But maybe some people might be confused because you used a tileset.

Hoi Captain Duck,
Thank you so much for these - and keep them up!
I found DF a few months ago but couldn't get into it at the time (though I loved the Boatmurdered story hehe).
Anyway, saw your vids today, downloaded one of the graphic set versions and had a great time - good job (also to programmer!)

Only thing that caused me so much grief was trying to farm!  I think my dwarves ate all my seeds before I had a field in the first game I played, then I spent so long trying to get water underground... now I found some areas near lakes are softer so I'm OK I think.. phew.

Captain , are you Dutch ? Because you sound like a dutch-speaking person who talks English. And I don't mean it in a offensive way :D Anyhow , great job ! This will definitly pull over some people who tought that the game was too hard or that couldn't find/understand things from the wiki.

Make sure this gets posted in the wiki!

Also, I would put the text on the wiki to include the seeds, and put world saves up on DFFD so that people can play along at home...

@ R1ck  & E-mouse
Yeah im using tiles, but in the youtube version i've linked to where you can find a preinstalled version of DF with tiles ( http://dffd.wimbli.com/category.php?id=18 ). Thatll work for most new people

@lucifer
These video tutorials arent really a high quality production, im from the netherlands so my english isnt perfect, but i think i get the message across.

:)

@Granite26
I could post it in the wiki but don't really know where to place it though. Also its not nearly done yet and i dont want to keep updating yet another place everytime i make a video.

On the seed and DFFD thing, ive never done those but i guess i could figure it out, ill spend some time on that later.

Also, the OP has been updated with part 08:

In your first video you said that Vegetation is not really important but I usually find it useful if you want a different type of booze (not just dwarven wine) such as longland beer and all those other ones (I don't know them by heart) because your dwarfs can get a bad thought if they only drink the same booze.

thats the only bad thing I can say about your videos because they are very good :)

EDIT: Also on part 3 there is a grammar mistake right at the beginning that says "if knows whats going on already you might want to skip this video" but it should say "if you know whats going on already you might want to skip this video"

also in video 3 Capnduck says that he is using a graphical pack and he says where to get it from

EDIT2: wow am I editing alot anyway you might want to tell the viewers that depending on the biome if there are carp or sea lampreys or other dangerous fish in rivers or ponds or small pools of water

Yeah you got a point in that, i should do that to.

Anyway it might be smarter if you also add suggestions like this as comments on the videos themselves, since this project is going to take a lot of time and i dont think i will rerecord or resubtitle any of the videos.

For wiki, you should create a Captain_Duck's Video Tutorials page, with links to each one and short verbage.  The trick is, every time you finish a video, go edit the page and add it onto the end.

your video #6 has thought me that you can make a seat out of stone, a throne!!!
I would always make them out of wood until now thank you :)

Videos looked great, but the DF music playing in the background, at nearly the same volume as your voice, was a bit distracting.
