@Captainduck

Please make more videos of the newer versions of DF.  I just want more videos of you explaining things in Dutch Speak.

Ok, im really noob and don't know anything
should I first watch the video with two and half hours
or watch the 2009 ones and then the 2010?

or would be better for me first read the TinyPirates tutorials from the other thread?

Thanks

It depends on what you are looking for. If you want to know how to do everything and not worry about old version vs. new version changes then watch the huge 2 hours 33 min video. If you are okay with needing to look up how things changed at some points then either you can read TinyPirate's tutorials or watch the 2009 videos. The 2010 videos cover several of the changes that have been made recently, so if you choose the 2009/TinyPirate option then you should watch those as they will probably cover most of the changes that have been made since the 2009/TinyPirate tutorials.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Just another reply to say - the tutorial is superb, and got me from having absolutely no clue what to do to having some, mild clue what I was doing! Invaluable. The wiki and other sources are crucial too, but it's all the better to actually see it played...

How do you use your dwarfs then? Well, when they aren’t mucking about your barracks working on their skills they can be out fighting bad guys! How I do it, when invaded is:

    * Hit “m”.
    * Go to a squad leader, hit “v” (NOT “a”, that turns them back to peasants – but “a” again will turn them back to squadies).
    * Hit “t” to make the squad respond to orders.
    * hit “z” to zoom to the commander.
    * I then go to the level and place I want the squad to go.
    * Hit “s” to station the soldiers there, or hit “p” to place a patrol point and then move your cursor around and hit p again to place another point (and keep hitting “p” to place more).

Your soldiers will now stop what they are doing and rush to the station point. Sometimes it’s a good idea to set it in a safe place first, so you can at least get a few moving all at the same time. If you just drop the station point in the middle of the bad guys you risk your lads charging in one by one.

this confuses me.  normally i just press 's' then 'm' and hope by the time my squads move all there none of teh idiots run back and then when they gather I send them after the enemy together.

what is this saying?

your tutorial could have been shorter if you stuck to the point more, you tend to ramble a bit, still, great work

I should probably clarify on that:
its like a presentation. If you dont prepare, you tend to hop from one item to another. Also, when you get to something, you'll want to explain everything about it (in general, not just "you")

lets follow a script:
world creation:
main screen, => start new world
world creation screen => explanation of all parameters and ideal settings for beginners

looking at world generation => cut it off when it starts to generate history with something like "we dont want to wait for that", go back and start playing in a world you made earlier, so you know where certain places are

world view => world, region, local explained
world icons explained
region icons explained
moving about in the map
local icons explained, enlarge/minimize area,
local things (aquafier, clay, soil, metals, etc)
find option explained

Embark! => short explanation for big/small area benefits
starter pack or make it yourself?
make it yourself (prepare) explained - controls (dont forget the name change. I once was the flowerlove of rabbit or something)
view dwarfs, point out strengths, weakness, social antisocial, creative etc
give nicknames?
explain a bit (not too much yet!) about the skills
allocate points

item selection (been there once already when explaining the controls)
vital, non-vital, optional?
look at vital items
look at optional items
animals: vital etc
(btw, imo, 1 cat and some dogs, plus chicken or turkey and some sheep is good. sheep give yarn, milk, etc, but dont eat as much as larger grazers.)

It sure looks like a lot, but you can cram it into quite a short time
and do NOT repeat things. thats th beauty of this, they can just go back to watch something you said before

i used to be very good at presentations

Hey captain duck!
I watched your LP #5 and noticed your dwarves are drinking water and not booze. Did you never build a still and thus ran out of booze?

Hi Captain Duck.
Love the new videos.  My husband recommended that I watch your tutorial back when I was first learning to play and they helped so much.

Thanks Captain Duck for the tutorials!  They got me into DF a while ago!

Wouldn't have been able to understand this contraption otherwise!
