I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

Hello everyone, just registered to the forum. I started playing DF a few days ago and it is AMAZING. Whoever made this game is a genius. I definitely plan on donating $50-$100 in the near future because i would like work to continue on this game. I also wanted to say bravo captain_duck on a job well done, these videos are amazing. Excellent work my friend, keep it up. :)

I know everyone else has already complimented him to death, but I thought I'd say:  Boatmurdered got me into Dwarf Fortress, Captain Duck made it possible for me to actually play the game.  Without the original videos, I'd might never have stuck with it more than a week.

Oddly enough, this exact thing happened to me. ♥ your videos Duck! Sorry about your financial situation. :(

Also bear in mind that dwarves have their heads at a perfect height for a good face-kicking.
That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.

Thanks, captain_duck, for your efforts here.  I've enjoyed your videos for quite some time, and just sent you a donation for ~81 Euro as my way of saying thank you.  :-)

One thing I do wish you'd include is a text version (somewhere) of what your starting inventory and dwarves consist of (skill-wise).  I've tried to mimic what you have in DF2010 video #1, but the points simply don't add up -- I'm left with 60 points, which probably means I'm missing some skills on the dwarves.  All I've been able to discern from the video is:

Code: [Select]
Customising items
===================
- (3) copper picks
- (2) copper battle axes
- (40) dwarven beer or dwarven ale
- (20) dwarven wine
- (5) plump helmet spawn
- (5) sweet pod seeds
- (5) rock nuts
- (5) pig tail seeds
- (5) cave wheat seeds
- (5) dimple cup spawn
- (10) plump helmets
- (2) pig tail fiber thread
- (2) pig tail fiber cloth
- (3) pig tail fiber bags
- (2) pig tail fiber ropes
- (1) cow leather armor
- (1) cow leather helm
- (1) cow leather leggings
- (2) cow leather high boots
- (2) cow leather gloves
- (2) dogs (female)
- (1) dog (male)
- (1) cat (female)
- (1) cat (male)

Customising dwarf skills
==========================
- Dwarf #1 = (1) PROFICIENT miner
- Dwarf #2 = (1) PROFICIENT miner
- Dwarf #3 = (1) PROFICIENT carpenter
             (1) ADEQUATE bone carver
- Dwarf #4 = (1) PROFICIENT mason
             (1) COMPETENT stone crafter
             (1) ADEQUATE mechanic
- Dwarf #5 = (1) COMPETENT woodcutter
             (1) ADEQUATE axeman
             (1) NOVICE shield user
             (1) NOVICE armor user
- Dwarf #6 = (1) PROFICIENT grower
             (1) PROFICIENT brewer
- Dwarf #7 = (1) ADEQUATE wound dresser
             (1) ADEQUATE diagnostician
             (1) NOVICE surgeon
             (1) NOVICE bone doctor
             (1) NOVICE surturer
             (1) ADEQUATE appraiser
             (1) NOVICE leader

EDIT: Ahh, Dwarf #5 is also a NOVICE dodger, so that brings things down to 55 points instead of 60, but you start out with 44 points remaining...

EDIT #2: Figured it out by downloading DFVIDTUTS2010 play along edition.zip and looking at init\embark_profiles.txt.  Dwarf #5 also is an ADEQUATE teacher (determined by [SKILL:5:TEACHING:2] in the file).  Voila, 44 points.  :)  Yay!

Ah yeah, thats my setup. Especially for the 2010 play along edition i think i made a nice setup. I also made the woodcutterdwarf a teacher since he becomes the military leader, and i think it will help with him training other dwarves. I'll put that in the OP later since ive gotten that question a couple of times.

Also thanks a lot for that donation, it's by far the biggest i've gotten yet. Hell the donations were getting slower, i got like 6 bucks this month but you sure changed that. Thanks man.

I'll try to do a video soon as thanks. I've been taking it easy since toady has been updating a lot lately. But from what i hear 31.08 fixes a lot of things and is pretty playable

EDIT: I'll update the op with this later but for now, this is my embarking profile. Paste this in the bottom of your embark_profiles.txt:

I know everyone else has already complimented him to death, but I thought I'd say:  Boatmurdered got me into Dwarf Fortress, Captain Duck made it possible for me to actually play the game.  Without the original videos, I'd might never have stuck with it more than a week.

Same here! I'm a visual learner, so the videos made it make sense to me far more than written tutorials did.
