Isolating and trapping a wagon
« on: December 11, 2008, 11:14:54 am »

My share of merchant trapping has been limited to elven caravans and small human caravans without any wagons.
If you manage to trap a wagon before it makes it to the depot, what happens to it? Does it go mad and die like a creature, or does it behave differently? What happens if you flood the area where the wagon is trapped?

I think it gets scuttled eventually.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

If a wagon gets hit by a cave in, does it get knocked out like a regular creature?
If so...would it be possible to cage trap wagons?

Capturing a wagon should be pretty straightforward. Route the traders through a 3-wide passage, close it from both sides and use retractable spikes to dispatch all non-wagony creatures captured in the trap.

Only when discussing DF do you get topics with names like this one.

I love this idea.  I shall begin building my own wagon trap as soon as possible.

With a bit of modding, who knows?  War Wagons!

When a wagon is unable to path to the depot it is instantly scuttled, I think.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

What happens when it gets scuttled? Does it leave its contents behind?

Hmm.. If the wagon can keep moving towards the nearest trading depot, that means you can use a bunch of drawbridges to keep it going back and forth, as a form of decoration. If the wagon wants out at some point, you could do a similar thing, with exits instead of trade depots, to keep it going back and forth across the racetrack.

If a wagon is destroyed, all its contents are left in a nice little pile.

my first big fort a wagon went over an area where i was building a defensive wall, and somehow got stuck inside or on the wall as it was built. it went crazy, spinning around and changing direction before dissapearing. the merchants wandered off the map, and as QuantumSawdust said, all the stuf stayed there in a pile where my dwarves claimed it. on my list of creatures it showed at the bottom one dead wagon. i was very confused at the time, and kindof miffed that i couldnt unload all my annoying useless rock crafts on the humans.

somewhere on the wiki talk pages i remember seeing a person saying they found a legendary wagon in the legends mode, who lived a few decades and did things before being eventually scuttled.

Does a wagon 'die' when it's scuttled?
I'm a bit confused.

The logistical problems dealing with a private space colony are at least as bad as dealing with the zombies.

I don't suppose it's possible to play a Wagonoid adventurer, is it?

Edit: *notices date* Aw, crap.
