Or rename adamantium, which is currently a lot like mithril.

There are several dozen new metals in the next version. I'm sure those will keep you busy for a long time. And of course since they will be moddable, you can just put in mithril yourself if you fancy.

No no no adamantite is different from mithril although both are extremely rare and precious, we should have both in mho.

I think it'd be fun if Mithril grew from a tree, and elves harvested it (Without harming the oh, so precious tree).  It could be strong as steel, but light as butterflies...  And, elves would have something more to play with than wooden armor and weapons.  Good fun.

Assuming that DF is a lot like Tolkien's world in physics, mithril is very similar to adamantine: They are both light, rare, dangerous to obtain, immensely valuble, and much stronger than any other non-magic thing.

It just wouldnt seem right if we didnt add mithril  :( It IS a ripoff though, so is adamantine if we ever figure out who created the word. One game i came across called it Mithral instead, which i kind of prefer.

Anyway, if it is added mithril or its equivalent should be unique. It should not be "the next step" or the in-between material seperating steel and adamantine. Attaching it to the elves would be interesting. Wood armour and weapons is just NOT up to snuff. And it would make them more unique, instead of just "annoying snooty hippie elves".

This way you could raid elf villages to steal the metal from them  :D.

Maybe it's carried up into the trees through the roots or something?

It IS a ripoff though, so is adamantine if we ever figure out who created the word.

"Adamantine" is medieval if not earlier; it's a variant of "adamant" which just means a diamond-like material.  (Other variants are "adamantite" and "adamantium".)  "Mithril" is Sindarin, and comes entirely from Tolkien's imagination.

That was a really good idea. I picture a tree that sends down roots to the nearest mineral vein and starts to leech from it, adding those minerals to it's bark as reinforcement.

Like a cork oak, the bark can periodically be removed from the tree without harming it.

The material would be useless to get a proper cutting edge, I think, and wouldn't be possible to smith, but you could craft it into armor, shields, and possibly other things.

I don't know if mithril is an entirely Tolkien thing, but I do know that several authors use mithril in their works. It is possible for Tolkien to have thought up the idea, but he isn't the only author to ever use it. About it coming from trees and elves using it... Read Salvatore's Demon Apostle or something. I'm pretty sure it's mithril being extracted in that process.

I really don't see the need for mithril, seeing as the main thing it would do it remove flavor from the game.  As for giving it to the elves, I'd imagine that those magical elves have some way of growing extra-tough hardwood, so their wooden armor is comparable to bronze in toughness, but is much lighter.  Any metalworking they'd do would be of a magical sort, using bars they imported from the dwarves, or possibly enchanting metal goodies pre-made by the dwarves.

Yes, I was about to mention that.  In the book, though, it grows in little veins on the plant.  I didn't get too into the books, though, so I don't know much more.  I was thinking about elves harvesting metal in that way, though.

Perhaps it can be 'grown' into the desired shape, rather like how I imagine their weapons are, but a skilled craftself.  It would, naturally, take just about forever to make enough to fully equip even one soldier, but that's the draw back for having an unlimited source of metal that requires no tree death.  Failing that, it could be harvested in a raw form and heated magically, or with dwarf beards.  Maybe elves could import Coke in order to do it...
