Dwarves break up
« on: December 11, 2008, 09:02:41 am »

Since dwarves can fall in love and get in relationships, dwarves should also be able to have fights and break up, perhaps in overly stressful times. Sorta like how miscarriages work right now.

Perhaps the dwarves can get depressed or violent afterwards as a result of the break up.

It would be interesting to see dwarves deface walls with (Urist X loves Urist Z), lovers' hearts (bloody of course), etc.

I dunno. Dwarves seem to be rather traditional folks. I can see them breaking up over a particularly bad situation, but generally their own personal fights won't drive them apart. That is, unless one of them is a psychopathic murderer.

Perhaps the aforementioned miscarriage could cause a divorce.  Or how about when a spouse is recruited for too long.  Or when a spouse is injured and bedridden, particularly of the damaged brain variety, the healthy spouse's personality could decide whether she remains faithful and supportive, or whether she goes looking for comfort elsewhere.

Add some cultural ethics.  END_ENGAGEMENT, DIVORCE_ARRANGED_MARRIAGE, DIVORCE_LOVE_MARRIAGE... that sort of thing.

It really should depend on how the game draws up their culture.

It could be impossible to divorse... but even beyond that there are differing degrees as to what is acceptable grounds for divorce.

Is being far apart, dislike eachother, or cheating enough to warrent a divorce? Heck is being unable to have children grounds for divorce?

there is much that could be done in that area.

This makes sense, as it would allow Dwarves to be differentiated from Humans who might, say, divorce at the drop of a hat. :P

At the very least, if your lover is dead you should move on.
Dwarves can be more persistent than Dwarf Fortress players...

Well it could be a dwarven trait to be absolutely monogamous. Humans are whorish as fuck but that doesn't mean every damn race has to be

Yeah that could work, even tho I am not sure that divorcing dwarves is realistic or not...I just simply cannot imagine about divorcing dwarves...divorcing is a "humanish" act...at least this is my opinion.  :)

PS. IIRC in some cultures divorcing is not even allowed, but I might be wrong.

In some cultures throwing the spouse on the funeral pyre is S.O.P.  Not remarrying is easily imaginable.

There are some relatively simple possibilities here that don't delve outside the relationship system, like breaking up because your lover made a friend that annoys you.  That would be a pretty awesome start.

Personally, what I would like to see is romantic "involvement" without an attachment. That, combined with a "break-up" system would be pretty nifty.

Urist McAlone likes Urist McOblivious, but hasn't approached him yet.
Urist McOblivious and Urist McWeneednewnames are now lovers!
Urist McAlone is very unhappy. Someone she liked became unavailable.
