You added a new creature without re-genning, right?  Or switched the creature order around or something?  The creatures get indexed by their position in the file, and the civ uses that creature index, or something like that.

The only thing I've added to my version of the game is a race of Serpents that are playable (or at least they are supposed to be >:(). I made a new creature file for them and plopped them at the top, nothing else changed.

And you didn't create a new world?  So, there's your explanation.

e: ahahaha wait, you added ANOTHER snakeman race?  Did you notice the game already has snakemen?  That explains why it messed with ratmen, they're right next to the default snakemen.

That's probably the reason. Earlier on I realised this, so I changed their names to Serpent Lords. I have the old world with the Ratman civ, I'm testing to see if it will run on unmodded game.

I had somethin similar a while ago when i first tried to mod a new race. I had gremlins making civs altho i'd never touched their creature file and never added them in the entity file.

I'm not sure exactly what caused it, just my lack of familiarity in making a new race I think.

The only thing i can think of is that I designated civ leaders (eg Cho-ja Queen) in the entity file etc but didn't actually create that job/gloss.

Ok, so the world won't load on vanilla DF, that's understandable. Thanks for helping me find out the problem, I can now continue trying to make race work without Ratmen civs.
Waaaait. Why would the game make Ratmen civs, but it won't make my Serpent Lord ones? Strange, probably a question for the modding forum anyway.

Now that would be an interesting world to mod up, just allowing all races to build their own civs...

Hmm, right.  Thinking about modding myself.  Definitely a sign I should try out others mods to tide me over.

If they were named Snakemen during world gen, you probably just generally confused the hell out of the game.  "Uncontrolled behavior."
