Makeup

Well... Some dwarves might want it. At the least, a fortress that likes to trade with elves could enjoy selling makeup.

Primitive Makeup
- Crayons, soot, and leaves (ground up) could be used as makeup.
- Since dwarves are a society built on being underground, perhaps they might see soot as a form of art, to be shaped on their faces and bodies in interesting henna-like patterns.
- Crayons and/or ground up leaves could add dabs of color to the dwarves' soot for variety.

Advanced Makeup
- More modern sort, could be traded to the elves or humans.
- I suppose the contributing pieces would be pig tallow? cow fat? etc. All mixed in a vat and cooled at the correct temperature for a certain period of time, then mixed.
- I'm not too sure what the components are but just wanted to throw this idea out here because it didn't appear in a search.

PS: Still, I would MOST prefer interface and playability improvements first... ...

I like this.  Dyes could be generalized to act as pigments for other stuff like painting (as suggested by somebody in another thread) and makeup.  Various powdered minerals could also be used cosmetically (the ancient Egyptians used malachite).

Crayons would actually be fairly advanced, compared to something like a stick of charcoal -- they might need beeswax or something.  Tallow would definitely suffice as a base for a lot of cosmetics, though.

Once eggs get introduced, they could use those for cosmetics. It's what I hear the Egyptians used. THe reason they had makeup was because of the oppressive sun of the desert. They would put black makeup around their eyes to absorb some of the sunlight. Dwarves could do this in a similar fashion, but instead, use it to combat cave adaption. This would give it an application beyond just a trade good.

Dwarves are awarded with beard ornaments, and sacred markings, it's like e-Viagra to the Dwarven ego structure.
