Simple bloat: display items in lists
« on: December 10, 2008, 05:21:00 pm »

As a simple embellishment of the interface, display the item or creature at the beginning or the end of its description as on the map. For example, bins in the trade depot would have a brown X, dimple dyed rope would show blue §'s, captured ogres would have gray O's (with a cage next to them if applicable please).

Additionally, display the items a dwarf is wearing as a line in its detailed description.

You mean, display the tile next to the k-menu text?  If so, excellent idea.  This will make it much easier for newbies to figure out what's what.

This would help ease up the learning curve for noobs, I'm all for it.  And with all the stuff that Toady plans on adding, it would probably come in handy for us old-timers too.

Trade menu and stock lists were the ones I had in mind, but it would be very useful in that context. It's easy to add anywhere, since it's never more than 1 character.

You're right, this would be great pretty much everywhere -- the K and T menus, trade depot, creature inventory, container contents list, unit list, embark items, everything.  Wow.

Toady's been listing a lot of stuff for jobs and materials in the dev_now.
I'm thinking that while he's expanding choices and ability he's taking the opportunity to rework aspects of the UI that aren't up to the changes, rather than just patching them in. He seems very intent with regards to that sort of thing, doing teeth and eyebrows now so that the system doesn't have to be reworked again later.
(Personally, it's a little too much detail for me, but it's his game and I'm good as long as things don't get freaky with dwarves collecting trophies and making the teeth into arrow heads and making elf hair shirts and stuff. I appreciate the openness of the game, but sometimes things become the norm because of limitations in the game, i.e, cat eating.)

I'm good as long as things don't get freaky ... making elf hair shirts and stuff.

How's that freaky? Animal hair is a perfectly normal material for making cloth - wool, angora, etc.

Are you implying they are vegetables or minerals?

I'll step into this pyramid, and say, he is implying 'them' as an economic source.

I was thinking more of the way Nazi's made lampshades from human skin. Given that butchering traders is status quo for some...

Look, it's obvious that while they've got the HAS_THOUGHTS to be sentient, they aren't actually using them
