If your fortress is established on an Island do you get ... ?
« on: December 10, 2008, 04:51:07 pm »

Hello there ,

I've created a fortress on a Island and I just past my first year. I made tons of crafts, toys, instruments, booze for when the merchants drop by but so far )Early Autumn) no one has come. Is this because I am on an Island?

Actually, you should ALWAYS have access to a dwarven caravan unless you're the only dwarves in the entire world.

The only case when you might not is if you have no area on the outside region of the map on which they can spawn, which is unlikely.

If you started to play a tiny island where you entire in game map was completely surrounded by water... you're screwed. You won't get migrants, you won't get caravans, you won't really get a lot of interesting wild life (maybe)

if you don't get merchants by winter, try building a road out to the edge of map, sometimes works

Hmmm, edge of map thing might work. It's worth a shot if you are completely surrounded by water.

And if you are, please provide the world gen info. That's a very difficult feature to find.

Which is why it's better to embark on a haunted ocean.

I always shoot for terrifying unless I'm missing something... which would be harder? terrifying or haunted? All I get are freaking slugmen and snailmen and alligators all of which are zombies.

Terrifying is both savage and evil, so not only do you get savage-only creatures and lots of predators, but you get zombie/skeletal versions of them as well, and also the evil-only creatures.

As stated before, unless your fortress is entirely surrounded by water you should get dwarf caravans and migrants. Unless your parent civ is dead. I'm doing a hermit game on a fully surrounded island and it's BORING.  :P

I'm on this volcano/chasm/river Island :D and I just got a caravan and some immigrants (afther 3 in-game years)... So think that solves the question. It just takes more time to get a caravan and a lot of time to get some immigrants...

Lucifer , thanks for the help though.

Too bad the dwarves don't have a word for Gilligan.
