A rather devastating loss:

Code: [Select]
-snip-
40 points of corrosion.
I had been doing well in this particular battle up until the acid blobs got up front. I went from full health and no problems to dying in a heartbeat. I don't know the actual number of turns, but it was low enough that I didn't even notice until it was too late to run.

Unless I was more tired and braindead than I thought. By all rights this character should have won this game, but a group of acid spitters will strip you of everything in a hurry.

Yeah, I've lost characters like that too. Always bring rCorr, even if it's at the expense of other resistances.

...I just got killed by a spear trap in an ossury. It did 20 damage, which was most of my total HP (I was a spriggan).

Does anyone have advice for playing an OpTm (or octopodes in general)? So far, I'm really only good at getting them killed.

Step 1: Worship Chei
Step 2: Get the Trident of the Octopus King and all of the Octopus King Rings
Step 3: Win forever

On a more serious note, Octopodes actually have really good melee damage because of constriction, but can't take a hit at all because no AC. Therefore, they need to leverage things like summons[Sticks to Snakes, for example] or alternate means of protection[Spider/Ice Form]. Once you get Statue/Dragon form castable and have good rings, then you become a god, because you get to keep all your rings in your new form. Up until that point, however, its a rocky road. Gods I'd recommend would be Makhleb[Minor Destruction and Summon Lesser Demon are both very good and only require four points in Invocations], Hepliaklkana[Ancestor is good and you can make up for the reduced HP with the right forms] or maybe Fedhas if you have an especially strong sense of self-loathing.

^Disclaimer: I'm probably not any better at OpTm then you are. Take with a grain of salt.

I've taken a few OpTm up to 4-5 runes (and promptly died) and found their fragility to be a major issue... I'd say you may wish to consider skipping Blade Hands entirely (or almost entirely) and rely on Ice Form instead, until you get Statue Form.

Sure, the offense is beautiful and you have decent dodge, but you're also going to have to run whenever something gets a lucky hit on you.

Edit: I seriously need to stop trying for the ice archway. I've killed my last six GrEE in there (or right outside)... in a row.

Is there a way to set rest_wait_percent to split between hp and mana? So, for example, you can have it wait until 100%HP but only 70%Mana?

Does anyone have experience with Ashenzari later in the game? I usually pick him for eclectic characters because he essentially gives a skill aptitude boost for skills related to the items I have along with a nice set of information-related stuff. IDK how well he works in the late-game, though - is it worth it to abandon him and switch to a different god if for example I wanted to do the extended endgame?

Ashenzari's monster and portal detection is very nice in Hell/Pan and you can spam Scrying because of all the exploration you end up doing. Plus the skill boost is useful when branching out into new skills.

I'd still switch to Zin/TSO for Hells, and maybe Kiku for Tomb, but Ash is solid for Pan/Abyss. It also depends on if you're running something that has a strong advantage with knowing map layouts and monster locations, or if you're running that's geared more towards crushing everything in sight with brute force.

Yeah, pretty cool!  I've been practicing casters; and ggurman has been playing gnolls.

Got my first Octopode win ever this week!  Only found 1 ring of octo king though :(.  I've been playing on Crawl Asc under 'dani'
