Well to be honest the situation I stupidly got killed in would have killed almost any character. I literally didn't use a blink scroll I could have saved myself with.

Here you can see where I was warned twice I was about to die, where I chose to first attack again, then cast finesse of all things. And it's not like the enemy was 1 hit from death or anything...

As you can see, the defenses aren't bad. And if I had found a few EA scrolls, my AC would have been pretty good, really.  This was a case of hubris, not poor defenses.  What do your trolls tend to look like when you're starting lair branches?  I mean, it's not the AC of a gargoyle, but with the ac, ev, and sh all together, plus the high HP pool, this is was a fairly tanky character. With outrageous offense. Just with a lazy brained driver, unfortunately...

Please pardon the double post

I want to point out to Antioch that I'm not trying to tell you you're wrong about trolls being tricky for a supposedly easy race.  I know how annoying it is when an experienced player tells you "Nope your observations are wrong and you are playing wrong and everything is the opposite of what it seems".   I used to have the same opinion as you, but after playing a lot of trolls I think the midgame slump is overblown, and can largely be mitigated.

I just think that the weird troll power curve makes it feel worse than it is, and also lures you into making it even worse.  Most characters start kind of weak, and slowly feel more in control as the game goes on.

Trolls start off outrageously powerful.  You can pretty safely o-tab your way to the temple without even thinking.  Your skilling choices early on really aren't going to hurt you, no matter what, because you're so damn strong, that regen is insane early on, and the +3 ac is actually still meaningful.  However the regen becomes less meaningful (although still really nice) as your HP pool increases.  3 ac is worth less and less as time goes on.

This lets you make a lot of mistakes without realizing.  You could get to lair without training any defenses pretty easily.  And the aptitudes make it look like a big waste of XP to try to train defenses.  But then you fight your first spiny frog and it's a roll of the dice whether you kill it in one hit or it murders you in a couple rounds, because suddenly raw offense and a big HP pool aren't dependable enough when you're dealing with such heavy hitters that you can't just walk away from and regen.

However, as I tried to illustrate with that character dump, if you focus from the beginning on defenses (especially a shield, it makes such a difference) you end up with a not-too-squishy character in midgame, and you still have that outrageous offense.  No matter what, a troll is offensively focused, and they're going to feel a bit more flimsy than a minotaur or gargoyle, with the upside of killing stuff really fast.

The other problem with trolls, as I think my character shows pretty well, is that you feel like you're steamrolling so hard it's easy to go on autopilot and end up not paying attention when suddenly you hit a situation that requires a little strategy.  That's partly just due to the crazy offense, and partly due to the fact that there's a dip in the power curve that most races don't experience.  I think even at the point of that dip you're still more powerful than the average character, it's just that you're in a completely different mindset.

So TLDR; Yes, trolls are tricky, but I believe the easy category is where they belong, but their fundamental design is different enough from the other races that it's not immediately intuitive how they can be 'easy'.

Also, just for fun, I tried another troll.  Went with monk this time hoping to end up with a statue form troll (This is silly, if you just want to win a troll pick fighter).  Mindlessly o-tabbed my way to d9, hit an out of depth manticore, and ran into until I was dead.
Cripes... I need to stick with tab instead of bumping monsters.  The 50% HP warning probably would have saved me here...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here's just the highlight of me being dumb... again...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The correct response to this situation would have been to turn around the moment I saw the manticore.  Of course, if this was a Troll Fighter with a shield I probably could have won this... but still, it's a stupid thing to do.

So after spectating random people for two weeks every evening, I got anxious for some hands-on Crawl. I realised I needed something easy since I'm kind of rusty, and I couldn't remember if my new favourite combo got nerfed in 0.21 or not. I decided not to take any unnecessary risks:

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

You have razor-sharp teeth.
You heal very quickly.
When hurt, damage is shared between your health and your magic reserves.
Your bite disrupts and absorbs the magic of your enemies.
Potions cannot restore your health.
You are immune to rotting.
You have large cloven feet.
You are agile. (Dex +2)
Your body sometimes deteriorates upon taking damage.
Your magical capacity is low. (-10% MP)
Your system is resistant to poisons. (rPois)
You are resistant to electric shocks. (rElec)

This was surprisingly difficult, which I attribute to two things:
1. No Sabre of Speed
2. No rN+++

By surprisingly difficult I of course mean "I couldn't hold tab for all Zig levels".

I probably had a sabre of speed somewhere, but once I hit extended I decided I couldn't be bothered to actually look for it. I also had rN+++ but dropped my artefact rN+ rCorr Large shield for the much. much better artefact Large shield you see on me. The relatively long turncount is because I fully explored every single Pan level I hit, hoping to get my Pearl Dragon Scales enchanted to max. Didn't happen until I hit the Ziggurat after I got all 15 runes.

I...I can't actually give any reasonable feedback here. VsFi^Usk wicked fun, hope they didn't/don't mess with it in 0.21

Some of my DCSS deaths are picking a weak race/class/god combo and eventually ALL encounters turn into "run away or burn consumables".

*wanders in horribly late to Troll party*

My two troll cents: training dodging before lair completion is a mistake - the chances of some form of dragon hide armour dropping are pretty high these days, what with the steam and acid geezers, and the lovely fire dragon vaults which always feel horribly OOD whenever I bump into one.

Instead, fighting (HP + offense) should be your main and defensive skill, then if you get some sort of hide, train armour, then after that train some dodging. Seriously, with troll Dex your EV is going to be crap anyway, just boost your HP instead.

Thats how I do trolls anyway (disclaimer: TrHu only troll victory).

@Graven: hot damn, that is a nice shield. I really need to try overcome my fear of Pan and Hell, but whenever I go there, best outcome, it just feels super sketchy, then I get horribly mutated, run out of mutation pots, get scared, and leave (even with Jiyva, seriously, I suck), worst outcome, I die horribly.
