So I conquered tomb, abyss, and 3 of the hells since the last time I posted. I gotta say, the hells weren't as scary as I thought they would be. For a high level caster with good gear, I was rarely ever afraid of dying. Hell effects weren't as bad as I thought they would be. Most of it was just small chip damage although sometimes I would get something nasty like yellow magic contamination or a swarm of demons. Torment wasn't that bad either. Usually I would be able to kill a torment capable monster within two turns and my rN+++ mitigated the damage enough in the few situations that it actually did go off. I was expecting hellfire to be scarier but it did even less damage than torment (obviously). It was also easier to kill hellfire capable monsters because they usually only appeared due to hell effects (putting them right next to me and in range of my crystal spear). The only close encounters were when I was fighting Dispater and when I decided to fully explore Erishkigal's maze (fun fact, there is no loot inside it and having monsters spawn in corridors is quite dangerous).

Now although there isn't too big of a risk of getting outright killed in hell, the attrition is brutal. Stat drain can cripple you with burden and level 9 spell hunger costs if you don't want to waste a restore abilities (you poor guys don't even have those in the later versions) and rotting will quickly empty your stock of curing. I don't even want to get started when you gain yellow glow and subsequently bad mutations. I tried to push through as hard as I could but when I got both a -2 strength and Int mutation, I just had to quaff a curing pot which forced me to give up my low metabolism and carnivorous mutations. When I first started the hells, I tried to fully explore each floor, but at around dis 4 I realized that there wasn't really any point to it. There was no food or loot, and I was eventually going to run out of supplies at this rate. I then started rushing and things got a bit better. After clearing Cocytus I took a look at my stock and but I was still running low. I only had around 6-8 curing pots, 4 restore abilities, 2 heal wounds, 1 meat ration, 4 scrolls of identify (remove curse was in good supply), and 1 cure mutation potion. I had a lot of bread and a ton of small fruit but I ignored those. That's when I decided to tackle a Zig...

*beat*

And wow was that long and pointless... I wrote two paragraphs about my experience there before I lost my sanity describing the bloody place. That place made me stay away from crawl for two days after practically being traumatized by that last room. I went to bed at 7 PM that night! Anyway, I lost a lot of curing potions, a few artifacts, my crystal ball of energy, my disc of storms (for silent spectres), and all my heal wounds. Thankfully I was able to replace most of those by buying stuff in shops or picking up duplicates somewhere else. What I gained was a manual of invocations, enough potions of xp to level invocations to its current level and use up the manual, a +2 helmet of intelligence (sort of makes up for accidentally dropping my crown of Dyrovepreva), 5 potions of cure mutation, and a few pointless souvenirs like the staff of torment.

Problem is, the shops are beginning to run out of stock and this will probably be one of my last batches of curing potions. I can probably win a 15 rune game at this point, but I'll be cutting it close. Anyway, Gehenna is reportedly the hardest hell so in preparation for it I decided to replace bolt of fire with bolt of cold for those fire enemies. Any other spells you'd recommend me to learn for this specific branch, anything about it that's different from the other hells?

Also note that I haven't done pan yet because I don't like the whole idea of not being able to leave when I want.

Lets use the ancient naval art of training war parrots. No one will realize they have been boarded by space war parrots until it is to late!
You can fake being able to run on water. You can't fake looking cool when you break your foot on a door and hit your head on the floor.

I have a couple questions about amplifying magic effects. So if a fire spell has #####... (5/8) spellpower and you equip a ring of fire, but the spell remains 5/8, it's not actually doing more damage right? You'd have to train the schools involved to get anything out of the ring by bumping it to 6/8?

Do rings of fire, staves of fire or conjuration, and Vehumet's amplifying effect stack with each other?

I'm fairly certain that the little hash marks are merely indicators for increments of spellpower[I THINK its about 20 points per hash mark?] and you'll still get results even if it doesn't move the meter up a tick.

Spellpower enhancers do indeed stack with each other, although in practice you'll rarely want more then one or two at a time. In theory though, if you were an octopode, you could have ELEVEN fire/ice spellpower enhancers all active at once and they'd all stack. You'd also have r--------- to the opposite element, but still. Also note that Vehumet does not actually increase your spellpower at all, just makes it easier to cast destructive spells. This is similar to wizardry effects[Which don't stack], but does stack with other wizardry effects.
Not quite on a few points.
Enhancers are limited to a maximum of 3, and negative resistance is similarly capped at r---. Some enhancement effects (like the wild magic mutation) don't count against the limit of 3 enhancers.
The bars represent: 0, 10, 15, 25, 35, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200.
Each enhancer does indeed increases power, even if the bars don't change. There is a stepdown past 50, where every point costs more to get. So although each enhancer multiplies your raw power by 1.5 pre-stepdown, it (above 50) ends up increasing your effective power by 15-25 points.
Also note that enhancers do nothing if a spell is already at max power.

Negative resistances are actually capped at a single pip unless they changed it in trunk. rF- is the same if you have it once or 5 times.

Pan isn't particularly dangerous if you have already done the hells (and don't feel the need to kill the unique pan lords). I typically do leave it for last though, so I am tough enough to take on any ziggs I find in it.

The only notable thing about Gehenna (that I can recall) are A) that there are a pretty large amount of hellions and brimestone fiends (hello hellfire). Try to avoid fighting too many at once, because hellfire is a huge pain, and B) Asmodeus, who is a pain in the ass that uses hellfire, is surrounded by a constant ring of fire, and can summon hellions and fiends. You should be able to deal with him using glaciate spam though.

Death's door and borgnjor's revivification are pretty good general emergency survival spells, but finding slots for both/either of them isn't particularly easy (you can free up 5 with dispel undead since you beat tomb, but finding the rest of the slots is much tougher).

Derp. Yeah, you're right. It is still capped at a single negative.

The Hells are way worse then Pan. Gehenna shouldn't be too bad as long as you have a way to deal with fire-resistant enemies. Tornado + LCS/OOD or Glaciate both work well there. Note that Asmodeus is quite vulnerable to throwing nets, so go grab some of those if you can. Pan is easier then the Hells, since it has similar caliber enemies without the constant attrition of the hell effects. You CAN effectively leave whenever you want, since portals out through the Abyss are relatively common and the abyssal rune means that you won't spend that long in there. Even though you're absurdly powerful, remember that you still die VERY quickly. Avoid the hellion island[You'll know it when you see it] and you'll be fine.

IIRC zigs no longer spawn in Pan in 0.18. At least, I didn't see any across almost 50 pan levels the last time I was there.

Huh. Yeah, apparently Zig spawning was changed in .18 to get triggered by a zig figurine (an item) which is guaranteed to spawn in tomb 3 and in Zig 27's.
E: I'm not sure if the figurines are in addition to the regular spawning, or replace it instead.

I'd rather disagree with Hell being worser than Pan. Pan can surprise you with Glaciating Pan Lord, surrounded by horde of smiters in a single small room upon entering new floor. Hell never gives you something as unexpected as this and is quite predictable. I've only died in Hell while attempting it on an Orb Run. To a party of angels, for additional insult.

Zigs do NOT spawn in Pan from 0.18 onwards, this was mentioned in changelog.

With Pan, there are some circumstances where you have to read a scroll of fog/create a cloud and then teleport yourself away. However, by the time you get there, basically everything else in Pan is easy.

There's still a zig in the depths, but no more zigs in Pan.

I beat The Pits (a sprint map). When I first looked at it, I kept dying over and over - the first section isn't too bad, but I would always get overwhelmed in the second (to the right of the start) or third (I always chose to go upwards). However, I discovered a few things that made it significantly easier:

Qaz also works quite well for Sprint blasting. DsFi or HOFi with him or Chei both wreck.

I just tried Qaz with a MiFi. I beat Ziggurat Sprint on the second try and The Pits on the third. I hadn't really messed with Qaz before this, but Disaster Zone is excellent for clearing large areas. The two main downsides are that it's extremely loud and sometimes destroys doors and walls, bringing more enemies into the fight, and that it temporarily turns floors to lava. On the other hand, if more enemies show up together, you have to use Disaster Zone fewer times to clear them all. Also, lava floors are nice to keep some dangerous enemies out of melee range.

The Hells are way worse then Pan.

If you're talking difficulty, yes, I agree. But at least the Hells 'only' have seven levels each. Going through level after level of Pan waiting for one of the ones with a rune on it to spawn can be maddening. That's one change I do appreciate in the latest version, actually, the whole 'Kill enough shit in the Abyss and stairs/an exit will spawn' thing.

I seem to recall something like that being added in the trunk changelog, actually. Some sort of cumulative percentage that you'll get a rune level after every Pan level.

Hell effects are utterly terrible. They're an exercise in "How long can you keep giving a shit before you get fed up and make a dumb button press and die". I disagree about rMut though. Before, it was "Glue an rMut amulet to your neck so the absurd amounts of neqoxecs around every corner don't make you utterly useless". Now there are WAY less neqoxecs around and you can actually use amulet slots for other things[Like harm, for example].
