Hey does anybody know what font face and colours are used in the online version of this game? Suddenly I realized that I can't play without those in my desktop version, they are just so cute (and I am not going to play online only for the reason to see those colours in the game). I probably have already asked this question here or on other forums, but since I'm asking again, it seems that I didn't receive a correct answer back then (honestly, I don't remember; it was like a year ago that I played DCSS regularly).

Probably my luckiest set of artifacts yet.
Holy shit, that crystal plate is amazing, the across the board stat gains aren't the most impressive, but +20 crystal plate is crazy. That demon blade is pretty damn fine too, on tier with the absolute best artifacts I have seen. Seriously, those two are pretty much enough to carry someone that can use them all the way to extended without any problem.

The ring mail is pretty unimpressive though. +10 ring mail sounds nice (equivalent to +5 plate), but its much worse because of the terrible GRD ring mail has. Its brands aren't particularly useful or strong either. I could see using it for a mage, but even then a well branded robe or dragon armor would probably be better.

I actually used the ring mail for a short time before I got the crystal plate armor since it was better than the unenchanted plate I had. But yeah, the crystal plate armor is basically the best armor I've ever seen and I probably won't replace it (barring some equally unlikely gold dragon armor randart) but the sword won't make it all the way through extended - vamp is near-useless once all the enemies are undead/demonic and I won't be able to a demon blade at all once I convert to TSO (randarts can't be converted to holy weapons, right?).

What does *drain do? I know what *rage does but not drain.

It causes minor drain when the item is unequipped. I tend to ignore it because the only item I often temporarily switch to is a non-cutting weapon if I see a hydra in the early game.

Yeah, you are right, it can't convert artifacts.
And being daft, I thought that vampirism worked on demons. Which it apparently doesn't. So yes, you would want to ditch it eventually (although it would be pretty good for clearing Zot and most zig levels) even if you didn't swap to TSO.

So things have been interesting. I alt-tabbed through Spider/Swamp, cleared Elf with no problems thanks to MR+++++, had basically no trouble with Vault/Depths, had an easy Slime (except that I could never find a wand of digging ::)), cleared ~15 levels of a ziggurat, switched to something with rN and cleared Abyss and Tomb. I never found anything better than the armor and weapons I already had, and the only demon sword I found was another randart. I was planning on doing a disappointing 4 rune run

Then I realized that I could just find the first group of demon knights in Gehenna and get a non-artifact demon sword :P.

Edit: I'm up to 11 runes now. Gehenna and Tartarus were easy with the appropriate resistances. I'm scared to enter Dis and both attempts to go through Cocytus ended badly, so I'm doing the Pan runes first (which aren't all that difficult as long as you have the applicable resistances and good defenses, plus some panic items). Although I only have two of those runes, I've seen a number of unique levels - most weren't too bad. Except for the one with the island of smiting enemies, because I started off right next to the island and almost lost all my HP in ~2 turns. The only reason I survived was fog + blink + a lucky Abyss portal.

And I won (with 15 runes)! I ended up staying with Oka until after Tomb and Zot (but before Abyss :P) because I had rN+++ already. I dropped the demon sword and got a eudemon one, then cleared Abyss/Gehenna/Tartarus/ran from Cocytus. The five Pan runes were fairly easy - I basically buffed myself and whacked the Pan lord until it died. At this point, I had all my resistances up without needing to switch armor, so I dropped my str+10 boots for some boots of flying for Cocytus. I finished up with Dis, which wasn't all that bad.

I also tried to clear a zig, but had to bail after 24 levels once I ran out of strength potions and scrolls of immolation.

Some things I learned:
-With enough int and strength, you can still be a wizard even in crystal plate. However, unless you have really unusual stat boosts (like +10 int or something) it's a waste of time to train for spells above level 5 or 6.
-Scrolls of immolation are really powerful if enemies crowd around you. Reading one or two and then exploding a few nearby enemies was enough to clear some of the later zig levels.
-Potions of strength are also really good for killing things with high AC
-Smiting is still evil. So is torment.
-Leaving DCSS up while doing something else will cause the timer to continue incrementing (hence the 8 hour time)
-For a melee character, there's not much of a point to leveling in Pan after getting the runes
-Tomb < Gehenna/Tartarus < Pan < Cocytus/Dis

Is my character build OK? Is there something obvious that would have allowed me to clear the rest of the zig?

Zigs are hell for melee chars. From what I understand, you need either a really good AOE god[Ru, Uskayaw, Chei, maybe even Qazlal if you have enough piety] or a god that gives you good panic buttons[Zin, Chei, Lugonu, Kiku]. Nemelex might actually work for both of those too, but I've played a total of three Nemelex games and only one of them got to Lair. Demonspawn with the right mutations should be able to clear it even with a sub-optimal god as long as they don't run into a holy floor and most undead will have a lot less trouble. Otherwise, its easily the most difficult thing you could have chosen to do in Crawl, unless you decided to bring the Orb along with you.




Your char is absurdly robust in a lot of ways and pure melee taurs are quite solid, but I think you kind of goofed with your spell choice in going offense. Maybe if you'd had more balanced stats and gone Chei, you could have cast level 9 spells with brilliance and wiz, but as is you wasted a lot of xp there. Iron shot is probably the pinnacle of what you could reasonably have cast[Iron Shot is still quite useful, mind you]. I'd also have gotten at the very least Darkness[Reducing LOS is the best defense against torment/damnation], Aura of Abjuration[Makes shadow demons cry calignous tears] and Haste[Gotta go fast]. Usually I'd go for Necromancy for DDoor and Borgnjor's once I got those spells online, but high Translocations investment yields some nice spells for dealing with crowds and Eldritch Tentacles might be useful summons even in a zig.

From what I saw, good reserves of immolation scrolls are just as good as an AoE god - if I had 5 or 6 more, I could have cleared the zig. I definitely had enough scrolls of blink/teleport, although having cblink would have helped. AoAbjuration would also have helped, but I never found it.

I think if someone wanted to do a pure melee Zig (= no AoE gods, no scrolls of immolation, no storm discs, no other non-melee killers) they would have to use axes (for the swinging attack) and heavy armor on a character even tankier than mine along with Makhleb (healing) or Gozag (distraction).

Axes could be swapped for Maces/Swords, since most of the time you're against three opponents at most and not killing even one for a long time is frustrating (tried both ways). Disc of Storms is good... But only for self-healing characters, as it damages you really fast, especially in the corner.

Still, for melee char, clearing Zig:20+ mostly depends on luck. Hordes of Angels/Demons can kick your ass really fast. You can teleport through those horrible floors, though.

Anyway, I don't really know where to go from here. I'm nearing the peek of my spell slots, but I don't know which spells I should be forgetting in order to make room for stuff like control blink. As a matter of fact, I don't know which spells I should be learning next (and the respective schools to train) either. All the books I have in my inventory contain at least one spell that I want (there's also a necronomicon for sale), but I can't memorize all of them.

If it helps, I plan on attempting some of the extended end-game because this is probably the best character I'll have to do it in a long while.

I would forget magic dart and ignite poison for sure. I would also forget apportation as it doesn't seem very useful either (although never having used it, I wouldn't be sure) with the the notable exception of getting the orb (at which point you could relearn it).
Swiftness seems pretty useless at this stage of the game, especially as you already have haste. Mephitic cloud is also a bit beyond its sell by date, so you should forget it as well.
I would ditch blink as soon as you get controlled blink, given its of very questionable usage when you are trying to escape or get distance between you and a enemy. You do need it for training purposes until then however.
That gives you 11 extra spell levels fairly easily (for a total of 13 free spell levels).
After that it gets much harder, but you do have quite a few direct damage spells (bolt of cold, bolt of flame, (delayed) fireball, mystic blast, crystal spear, OOD, firestorm). They are all pretty great, but its almost certainly worth it to ditch at least one of them for more varied spells.

Personally I would get rid of bolt of cold, since you already have pretty good non-fire damage spells (which includes firestorm since it deals irresistible damage), but its up to you. If you only get rid of bolt of cold, and all of the earlier ones that gets you a total of 19 free spell levels.

(E: I'm also not a very big fan of crystal spear (or iron shot/stone arrow). I don't find it much more useful then other spells (eg. firestorm, OOD) even against super tough single enemies it should work significantly better against, so I would *personally* probably forget it, but you may get good useage out of it, or like it, so its up to you there.)

My recommendations are:
Controlled blink is always super great, and although it is rather costly to get up there, its certainly worth it.

I'm a huge fan of necromutation (especially comboed with sif muna), its not really needed outside of extended (where its pretty amazing), and its crazy expensive to get necromancy/transmutation that high up simply for a single spell. Since you are going into extended, then it is worth it since it gives a ton of boosts (torment immunity, rC+, rN+++, slight armor boost, turns negative mutations into rot, +50MR and infinite sif muna channeling) at pretty low cost (no potions, turns mutations into rot, no holy weapons and dispel undead hurts you), especially since it takes a single turn to cancel it if you need potions or are scared of dispel undead. If you are planning on getting this, its probably worth forgetting another one of you attack spells so you can learn it+blink+another high spell.

Your earth is pretty high up, so you might want to consider the shatter spell. I'm not the biggest fan of it (since its useless on a significant number of enemies), but it isn't very costly for you to learn, its pretty strong against large crowds of enemies it does hurt and its decently useful for sneaking in and grabbing runes since you can use it to break through everything but permawall.

I haven't played a mage since Spellforged Servitor has come in, but it sounds like a pretty awesome spell, and you could probably cast it with just a few levels in summoning (since its conjuration/summoning). It should be worth it to at least test it out.


There are quite a few other spells that people like out there though (like Borgnjor's Revivification, high end summonings, ect) that you can try as well.

You also want to get better rF, and keep in mind that non-int stat boosts aren't that great especially on a mage.

tl;dr:
Forget: magic dart, ignite poison, apportation, mephitic cloud, blink (you need it till you learn controlled blink though), 1/2 of your damage spells (bolt of cold, ???).
Learn: Controlled blink, necromutation, servitor (?), shatter (?)
Get: More rF, don't bother so much with stat boosts.

I'd forget any poison spells and IMB. Keep Bolt of Cold, since lots of things are vulnerable to it. OOD and LCS kind of overlap in being single target irresistable attacks. I personally prefer LCS since its not useless against close range enemies like OOD is[And you already have Fire Storm for things which aren't in range of LCS], but ideally you'd want both, if it doesn't preclude something else neat. If you haven't already, go pick up every throwing net in the dungeon. Throwing nets work beautifully against very hard uniques, especially in conjunction with LCS. Controlled blink might be worth it, considering you only have 3 cBlink scrolls, but I'd personally go for DDoor & Borgnjor's first. Shatter is worse then useless in not-Tomb extended, but it might be worth it as a swap for Tomb. Necromutation is kinda iffy, honestly. You've already got good rN and rC and Necromutation disables all your best panic buttons in exchange for hunger immunity[How is this useful] and torment immunity[This is actually quite good]. Either go for Glaciate or Tornado as an auxiliary level 9 spell. Tornado is more MP efficient and has a more useful aoe, but having access to both Glaciate and Fire Storm helps your versatility quite a bit. Spellforged Servitor can't cast level 9 spells and is kind of fragile, but I've never really used it. If you're going Tornado, don't use it.



Also, clear Zot completely before doing Extended. Zot:5 alone gives an absurd amount of experience. I honestly think it gives more then all four Hells do.
