Not sure I would agree with distortion. Dont get me wrong, it fucks things up hard, but it can also, say, teleport a deadly ranged monster far enough away for you to get hit at range, or take a priority target away from you in a crowd. And I hope you dont plan on changing weapons at low-to-mid levels if you arent worshiping Lugonu...

I find it fitting that pain and protection don't even make the list :P.

i don't see how a weapon that actively impairs your ability to hit enemies is worthy of a C tier

even minus the unwield effect, randomly blinking and teleporting your enemies is quite unhelpful

You have to drink the potion of ambrosia or you'll unavoidably die from poison.  Unfortunately the confusion from that will likely get you killed anyway, so.  Enjoy your death.  The only way you're getting out of that is if RNGesus decides to marry you.

No, he can still activate Shadow Form[Which grants poison immunity]. That plus summoning MIGHT get him to safety if things go perfectly.
DAMN if only your post had come earlier, my character could have been saved from almost inevitable demise. Too bad it didn't occur to me to consider the situation more carefully before doing anything.

Now, which spells (both offensive and defensive) is it better to learn to a 5 lvl spriggan conjurer in order to crawl through the first dungeon levels and those of the lair more or less comfortly? So far I have been unable to obtain any spellbook besides the starting one.

Also, in the previous run I got lucky to pick up a scroll of acquirement reading which granted me a +8 quick blade, and I guess it was a rare luck to get such a quality item?

+12 Long Sword (slice, Dex + 6) or Wyrmbane? I have 14 LS skill already and no Polearms skill, and this is still pre-Lair.
Wyrmbane is surprisingly poor endgame weapon, compared to a double sword/eveningstar. But it can tear through dragons like paper, so you may want to train Polearms, walk into Zot and laugh like a madman.

It's time for the ATHATH Death Counter to increase once more in celebration for the end of the world.

This got me thinking.

Presenting, Graven's Own Personal Brands List [measured in personal happiness on discovery]

No runes:
150% Chaos
100% Electrocution, Draining
75% Freezing, Vampiric
50% Flame, Venom, Protection
0% Distortion

3-5 runes:
150% Chaos
100% Freezing, Electrocution
75% Vampiric, Flame, Antimagic
50% Protection, Venom
0% Distortion

Extended:
150% Chaos
100% Holy
75% Anti-magic
50% Freezing
0% Flame, Protection, Venom
-150% Distortion

Trust me on this I just died in Depths with a Distortion Greatmace FoAK - fuckers will absolutely not stop getting blinked and then I have to either wait for them to return, or trudge further into the map to get to the damn Demonologist again before he drowns me in fiends

Eventually *someone* is going to get lucky.  I've seen a quickblade once and it was on a character that had no hope of using it correctly.

Why do you have chaos so high up there? Yes, its very effective 95% of the time, but the other 5% of the time it ends up doing things like berserking and healing that executioner you are trying to kill (resulting in it killing you), or polymorping that elephant slug into a nasty dragon.

In fact, I would put chaos at a negative rating consistently due to the possibility of terrible things happening and killing you.

I think you overvalue Chaos heavily, undervalue Antimagic, and undervalue Venom early, plus not treating Flaming/Freezing as the same, or having Flaming slightly higher because of hydras is odd.

Freeze is better than flaming during the late game because there are more fire resistant enemies than cold resistant ones.

Dazzling Spray would be the big one, with Iskenderun's Battlesphere coming a little later. Spriggans have a terribly aptitude for Conjurations[-3], but good aptitudes for Hexes[+2] and Charms[+4]. I'd train Conjurations and ~6 points in Hexes to start and then get Charms up enough to get Battlesphere operational. After that, more Conjurations, probably coupled with Poison and Air Magic, since Spriggans are the least bad at those two schools. Mephitic and Poisonous clouds are quite robust against a certain subset of enemies and Airstrike/Tornado are both decent damage spells that don't require Conjurations to succeed.

Freeze is better than flaming during the late game because there are more fire resistant enemies than cold resistant ones.

False. According to the wiki, there are 146 cold resistant creatures and 126 fire resistant ones.

I think the bigger flaw in the logic there is that either flaming or freezing are better in the late game when almost everything that resists anything resists both. I believe on average, vorpal beats both of them for damage in depths and deeper.

Ideally, you have a freezing weapon and a flaming weapon and swap between them. I've only actually gotten a +9 weapon of each type the one time, and that was only useful because Demonspawn can't use Holy.

Early on, flaming is definitely better than freezing, though - there's practically nothing with rF until Vaults. If you're using an edged weapon, flaming is essential for killing hydras unless you want to switch to a mace/flail every time one shows up.

Also, how does the speed brand compare? Yes, it significantly increases your damage output, but for most weapons it can only be on artifacts that can't be enchanted any more.
