I got two runes with my first character, and as I'm writing this, three. I'm going for all the runes, then the Orb. That's right, ALL SIXTEEN, SIX-AND-TEEN, 1-6, OF THE RUNES Game devs say its impossible. I do the impossible.
Actually, fifteen runes then the Orb are not that hard to accomplish with a right character. But the reverse (three runes - Orb - remaining twelve runes) is hellish experience. Don't try it with Ashenzari.

Axed my way to a 15 runer, can't say I really felt threatened  even once.

They try to remove things that are "tedious" but the game is definitely getting easier as a result.

I had my best run yet. I started as a MiFi, found an Oka altar, cleared the Lair, cleared the rest of the Dungeon (and got some excellent artifacts), cleared Orc, cleared Snake Pit, and then dove into Vault/Depths to clear a few floors. Next, I went for Shoals (which is an evil, evil place) for that rune. After that, I cleared Elf, Crypt (which is really really easy with rN+++ and the Sword of Jihad) and all of Depths. I got my third rune on Vault:5, and considered heading for Zot (which I should have cleared or dove into anyway). Unfortunately, I decided to do a 5-rune win. The first (Abyss) was fine - there was a close call as I was getting out, but it was otherwise uneventful. However, I tried to do Slime without rCorr. I did kill TRJ, but there were too many powerful slimes around him and I died.

tl;dr: Even at level 27, bring a source of rCorr for Slime.

You realize this is exactly what I'm going to do now, right? To prove it can be done? Why would it be hellish? Do the monsters get stronger after you get the Orb?

Ashenzari has yet to fail me. I'm at full piety, with a few remove curse scrolls so that I can still upgrade my equipment. I'm transferring my fire magic to ice magic to complement my flaming weapon.

By the way, the third rune I got was from Slime. Royal Jelly was...almost impossible. I snuck up to it, read its description, correctly assumed it was that fiendish kind of boss that summons minions to swarm you, chugged might/agility/haste/resist potions, cast my standard enhancements, THEN chugged a Berserk potion.
I had -16 Corr by the time I rekt it, even with my ring "Cylog" providing rCorr. And 24 HP. While Berserk, I have over 200. It was that close...

It would've been easier if slimes left skeletons for me to reanimate and level the playing field. I might get some summoning levels just in case, but I don't want to have too broad a skill set.

Got some sweet-ass spellbooks in the loot, and I just need one more scroll of enchant weapon to max out my hand-axe.

Further proof of my great luck is when a shining eye tried to mutate me, and made me more clever.

Without spoiling, returning the Orb to the surface can be a difficult task itself.  There's still a few more tricks in the dungeon if you've only done the lair branches.

At least that would be my theory, I've never tried to do anything aside from escape once I have the orb.

I tried that when I recreated my .18 tournament win character. I managed to finish off the Pandemoniums, got stomped in the Hells so I retreated, and died in the Tomb, of all places. And that was with Kiku and rN+++.

It's UGLY.

Axed my way to a 15 runer, can't say I really felt threatened  even once.

They try to remove things that are "tedious" but the game is definitely getting easier as a result.

Not surprised, the game is getting more and more dumbed down with 'dubious' changes for ages now, wouldn't surprise me if they add controller support soon....

I got two runes with my first character, and as I'm writing this, three. I'm going for all the runes, then the Orb. That's right, ALL SIXTEEN, SIX-AND-TEEN, 1-6, OF THE RUNES Game devs say its impossible. I do the impossible.
Actually, fifteen runes then the Orb are not that hard to accomplish with a right character. But the reverse (three runes - Orb - remaining twelve runes) is hellish experience. Don't try it with Ashenzari.

You realize this is exactly what I'm going to do now, right? To prove it can be done? Why would it be hellish? Do the monsters get stronger after you get the Orb?

Ashenzari has yet to fail me. I'm at full piety, with a few remove curse scrolls so that I can still upgrade my equipment. I'm transferring my fire magic to ice magic to complement my flaming weapon.

By the way, the third rune I got was from Slime. Royal Jelly was...almost impossible. I snuck up to it, read its description, correctly assumed it was that fiendish kind of boss that summons minions to swarm you, chugged might/agility/haste/resist potions, cast my standard enhancements, THEN chugged a Berserk potion.
I had -16 Corr by the time I rekt it, even with my ring "Cylog" providing rCorr. And 24 HP. While Berserk, I have over 200. It was that close...

I'd personally suggest up'ping your character by a LONG shot if you wish to accomplish that goal there :/ My characters usually get the third rune without losses in the Slime Pits--wherein as I recall my only problem with corrosion (curse you rCorr never popping up for me! EVER!), was in a Ziggurat level wherein I reached -64 corrosion from a mix of spider nest//that kind of airstrike-ish-smite-corrosive aether creature, and was playing a heavy mace/shield gargoyle with 50+ AC.

^Forwarding this, that run IS possible--however you need +regen for the rest time, plus given Ashenzari, you'll be noticing the interrupting spawns at least, but will have trouble resting in between the dangerous foes you'll meet; have a way to hit them from range, or run quickly away.

That said, has anyone ever seen a Boots of Travel lately? ._. I've rarely seen Boot-slot randarts/unrandarts compared to long ago. Miss scrolls of acquirement being 'type in your wish' :P

I got a nice STR+8 set of boots yesterday, but the only artifact boots I've seen are the stabbing ones.

I ended up getting one on floor 2 or so the other day. Unfortunately, it was while I was messing around with random combos and it was on something that just didn't work well, like a Dark Elf berserker, that died promptly.

Oka also seems fit to gift me boots of godawful suck all the time; I mostly just toss on boots of flying and call it good.

Getting boots of the assassin in the crypt with a minotaur wielding a maxed eveningstar of holy wrath was fun too, even though my stealth skill was untrained at the time.

I'm in the Elvish Halls now. The Mines shops had very little to offer me...but this antique armor shop on Hall:2 has a jeweled plate armor for 1000~ gold. Heavily debating buying it since I have a +Regen, +N, +rF, +9MP chainmail.

I read what picking up the orb does. ...I'm still gonna do it. I'm way too edgy to die.

Since getting hit restores my MP sometimes, should I switch to an amulet of guardian spirit if/when I find it?

I'm busy training my magic so I can get some better spells to compliment my axe. Animate dead, Haste, Discord, Deflect Misslies, Necromutation(!), and of course my shields/dodging skills so I don't get hit as much.

Kinda wish I'd gotten horns on my head instead of antennae.

...Well. There's a wizlab on Hall:3, and I came down the stairs almost literally right next to it. I thought I'd run my good luck streak, but no.

This game's too easy now.

In my opinion, the hardest part of tomb was the hallway in Tomb 1 that you enter by clearing the first half of Tomb 2. You are trapped in a long narrow hallway and the nearest pair of stairs are a long way away. I managed to barely get through it by spamming teleport scrolls and my teleport wand.

How did you clear it?
