Your next gift will almost certainly be that same axe. The rng is weird about that.

No it was a glowing dagger.

Evocations is a pretty mediocre skill under normal circumstances (so no related gods, nothing particularly weird about the loot you get).  It mainly functions to provide heavy armor characters with a form of special ability that doesn't care how encumbered they are (much like invocation).  Its pretty safe to either ignore it or use it as you please, except that most characters won't want it to be their first or even second priority for training.
Really? I've always found taking a few levels of evocations (Not a full-on focus, granted) really helps to shore up your abilities. Though the status wands never seem to be reliable enough to bother with :\

I'd say clarity and sust att are the two main draws of the crystal over the regular plate at this point. Keep the regular on for now. also, you seem to have put all your stat gains into strength. I keep hearing that that is not necessary. In fact, at this point you will reach the max of 27 natural before your last level up. Might want to switch to leveling dex? Or am I misunderstanding something?

I usually put ~10 points in Evo and have never really regretted it. The elemental evokers are quite robust and the new acid wand is very nice for clumps of resistant enemies like dancing weapons. That said, I only ever use status effect wands at very very low levels when I run into Sigmund and have like five items. They're just so rarely useful beyond that point. And there's literally no character that I don't haul one offense rod along with, just in case.

I am very slowly becoming better at remembering to use wands, elemental items, and the occasional deck. Now if I cold improve my use of potions and "lol nope, too scary for me," I might be a semi effective player.

I've gotten better about enhancer potions, escape scrolls, etc...But discretion still gets me killed nine times out of ten.

I am pretty tempted to run a Beogh character, seeing Sarrak's successes. but, I haven't won yet and I fel like I need to stick with what I know until I do.

Unless what I know is what is getting me killed :/

Why do people hate axes... my executioners axe works just fine, I chop up fiends in 2 or 3 hits and everything around it at the same time.

Of course fighting 1 on 1 is preferable, but that is simply not possible in a lot of situations, axes already pay off when you face 2 enemies at once, which is incredibly common.

Also I can charge incredibly dangerous spellcasters without worrying about everything else swamping me.

Go for it dude.  Which character you're playing makes a huge difference in crawl, mixing it up might be the path to victory.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

Well, they tend to have lower damage to individual enemies for more skill investment, plus to get anything out of them you can't use shields. They also promote riskier playstyles. That's not to say they're worthless, though, just hard to use well.

I've just started playing crawl. It's a lot like IVAN, but better. This is my first character, and he's working out just great. Mostly due to the insane streak of luck I had with the mutations that turned him into an edgegod badass. ...If only we had longcoats as armor....
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just gotta admire my level of regeneration. I'm healing 1-2 HP every turn naturally. Even though my armor's crap and lets me take way more damage than I'm comfortable with, a Shroud+Regeneration spell heals that back up in no time. The only monster that gave me trouble was the Lernean Hydra, with 27 heads it was just smashing through my shroud. Had to use a few scrolls of blinking to hide and recharge. Finally brought it down after I animated the skeletons of a couple swamp dragons and hydras. Yeeaahhh, take that Hydra! Your own family turns against you in undeath.

I don't even use the various wands I have unless I really need to.

By the way, in any other game I'd be a complete teetotaler, not using any items whatsoever. I really, really have using items. The fact that this game forces me to drink potions and read scrolls attests to its difficulty more than anything else.

...And where's Sigmund? The first unique I fought was Ijyd, and I squashed him flat.

Axes are totally great. Were my power not coming from the curses on literally every piece of eqipment I have, I'd use a spear against single targets and axes against more than one.

...Could someone draw a picture of my badass DsSk? Maybe after I win the game?

I do use them pretty well, given my record. I also think 2H axes are overrated. See my artifact axe "Jituimn"? Only thing it's good against is shock serpents. Electricity's about the only thing I'm weak to, and corrosion. Just can't beat that reflecting shield. Can't tell how many times naga sharpshooters killed themselves with their own bolts, or when a wretched star took a faceful of its own bomb-orb. If only I didn't have these antannae so I could wear helmets...nah, I don't need helmets!

...And I'm about to enter the Slime Pits. Full of Jellies and similar monsters. My god-tier +5 blazing war axe is in mortal danger.

Ijyd is generally a pretty easy unique, and no unique spawns every game, so Sigmund probably just wasn't there.

Congratulations on making so many of us look so bad at this game  >:(

I am quite envous of all those resistances. my current, level 20 HOFi has ... two pips in MR and I think one pip of rFire. It's killing me. I do have an amulet of clarity, one of rCorr, and one of regen, though. the last one is super helpful right now.

You got a rune with your first character? Holy shit.

I got two runes with my first character, and as I'm writing this, three. I'm going for all the runes, then the Orb. That's right, ALL SIXTEEN, SIX-AND-TEEN, 1-6, OF THE RUNES Game devs say its impossible. I do the impossible.

I have Ashenzari, that literal edgegod of cursed power, to thank. His information and buffing from being swaddled in emotionally-dependent equipment help me about as much as having...I think 2 regeneration points from mutation, plus the amulet and troll armor. I think I've pushed my luck with all these positive mutations from mutagenic meat and potions. If roguelikes teach you anything, it's know when to fold'em.

Even moreso was that incredible streak of luck with the positive mutations. I mean, really, even I don't believe that, and I saw it happen. Pretty sure I would've died a long time ago if I hadn't gotten those +Regen mutations.

But I really have to thank Iter Vehemens Ad Necem (IVAN), the first roguelike I ever played. Unforgiving, that. Half the time I starved, 49% of the time I couldn't get out of the first dungeon, and .9999% of the time I polymorphed into a dark frog and got splatted. Only way to win that game is to carry around a bunch of gunpowder sacks, stack them on the final level, lure the giant frog boss onto it, then zap it with a wand. BOOM. KFF
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
everywhere. I can't count how many times I died, how much I learned...I worked through all my deaths on that game. Thousands...tens of thousands...!

I find a viable tactic in being a tank. I mean, I'm "The Blocker". My SH, EV, and Regen stat make up for my low AC. Yeah, I take a bunch of damage when I do get it, but it's so infrequent that I can heal it all up by the next time I get hit.

....On an unrelated note, I just realized something. The Song of Slaying spell. The Skald sings a glorious ballad of heroes, increasing their power for every monster they kill. What if they're singing about Themselves? What if they're praising their own brutal kills of snakes and eldritch abominations, and their own gloating infuses their combat abilities? What if they're literally being powered by their own glory? (and pain in my case)
I'm glorious, and I'm wielding an axe! I'm DRAVEN!!! I just need a mustache and less antennae on my head.
This explains why I'm doing so well.

"The naga's bolt spat through the air,
but my shining shield reflected it back.

Near death from my war-axe swings
It split her head with a crack

Four vile creatures joined the fray
with spear, sword and barding.

My war-axe's flames
left their bodies a-charring.

My kill count up to five,
Vashnia alone remained alive.

Firing bolts through portals,
she swore to survive.

I took those hits like a man
my vitality overflowing

My body so quick at healing
my skin was almost glowing

Out of ammo, she could not melee
a curb-stomp battle this was to be

The result was as you can see
Her flaming arbelest is my trophy!"

Damn that was fun to write. I later checked the wiki, and found http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Vashnia
No melee tag? No wonder she stopped being threatening once I picked up all her crossbow bolts.
