Beogh worshipers may not do anything to orc corpses except use the 6* ability Resurrection on them. Such a character wouldn't be completely unviable, however, as long as you're careful about which spells you use at which times.

Seen them long before current version (surely in 0.15). 0.18 fixed random Jivya altars spamming early, btw.

I still regularly die to D:1 gnolls with branded polearms. Usually you're not going to have a ton of great options to fight them and you can't exactly stair dance to fight them safely.
Fighting gnolls on D:1 is a pretty good way to die. They aren't any faster than you, so the correct decision is simply to run away and come back after getting a few more levels.

If they corner you into the entrance vault it's either fight them and die or leave the dungeon and die. It happens far more often than I'd have expected possible.

Anyone know how -5 str compares to +6 slaying? Currently my OgHu of Okie is throwing a few rocks, and hitting stuff with an elec whip. However, I soon expect to be swinging a GSC instead. Currently wearing an amulet of regen (awesome) and considering switching to this:

I vaguely remember someone suggesting a rule of thumb for comparing Str to Slaying, whereby +6 slaying would more than compensate for the -5 Str, but I just don't know???

For that matter, is Faith unambiguously better than Regen on an OgHu of Okie? More rocks would be great. But oh sweet sweet regen on a high HP zero defense guy. Tricky.

regen is a magnitude better than faith.

Slay+6 is a larger bonus than strength -5, but personally I would still be going for regen.

Faith is generally considered one of, if not the best amulet.  Of course, it depends on your character to a degree, but generally on a god with invocations you want to use a lot (like Oka) faith is really, really good.  And you'll get some extra garbage, and maybe even something useful!

The rule of thumb I seem to recall is that 2 str is worth about 1 slaying.  I don't know if that really still applies anymore, since strength weighting was changed or removed or something.  I'd take +6 slay - 5 str on an OP for sure, since the STR isn't doing anything else for them aside from damage anyway, and slaying does it better.

Minor curiosity: while Vine Stalkers can't be healed by most items, being struck by a weapon of chaos works. Of course, being struck by weapons of chaos should always be avoided, so this probably doesn't break the game.

I'm at a point where I need to make a couple decisions about my character and path, I think.

I don't know how to make a character dump though. the upshoot is that I have a level 19 Hill Orc Fighter of Okawaru, one rune, decent strength and dex, 8 int, a +8 Crystal plate and some assorted armors, decent collection of rings, wands, and amulets - not to mention potions and scrolls, and both a flaming arbalest and a flaming triple crossbow.

I have the spider rune, and have been to floor three of the shoals, where I ran away from Mara.

I am trying to decide on which branches to go to to collect the other two runes ( I am probably heading to elven halls next, and hopefully can avoid dying there)

I am also trying to decide what skills to increase at the moment, and whether to learn some magic. I have a lot of books, so I can get a lot of different spells.

current skills, fighting axes and armor are in the high teens, invocations is close to 10, evocations is 7, xbows is about 13, and shields is like 3 or so.

I know that's probably not enough info. I should also probably make an account on the crawl forum and start asking there, but I've read a bit of it, and it's kinda a mess. plus, searches for specific kinds of characters often drop all the words  Isearch for as 'too common', so I can't find info, with the entire frum at my fingertips.

Don't ask on the crawl forum, honestly. You can pick up some good tips, but mostly not. Leaving aside my personal revulsion for both axes and crossbows, you should probably max both of them[All the way to 27, or maybe a few levels below that]. Even I acknowledge that an Executioner's Axe or a Triple Crossbow are very robust implements of destruction indeed, even if it requires lots of xp to get there and they preclude shields. I'd advise wearing the crystal plate armour, maxing Armour as well, using whatever two-handed axe you can find[Hall of Blades on Elf:2 often has at least one good axe] and the arbalest[Until you get enough Crossbows to use the triple one properly]. Its not like a shield would do you any good with only three skill anyways. You might want to swap out the crystal plate armour for something lighter and with more resistances later, if you find yourself lacking resists. Magic can be nice, but that's really not the type of character the game is telling you to make. If the game gives you crystal plate armour, make crystal plate lemonade.

thanks. it was a god gift - the best one so far. All my otehr god gifts this game have been ammo and some low enchant weapons. I currently have a +5 great mace and a +2 battle axe of chopping, along with sundry lessers.

oddly, two of my armor items have stealth as their only intrinsic, including the crystal plate. that is worrisome. I am getting very little in the way of resistances.

I won't worry about magic then.

I never understood the dislike of axes, except that it works best against several foes surrounding theplayer, and that's rarely a good way to play. I think I chose axes long ago primarily for that (when i was still dying before lair every time) and because it cross trains maces and polearms, so you have a head start on developing those skills if you find a decent weapon in those fields. I have ot found such yet, except the +5 great mace of freezing I mentioned.

i'll check it out. I tend to forget IRCs exist because they tend to be quiet when I am on. ah well. Must be my charming personality.

4: Slow and requires lots of skill to use.

That said, they can be decent if you're a race with good Axes[HO, Mi, DD] and you have good AC and HP. Your character definitely qualifies.

Those are kind of minor issues, since both swords and Maces also have a selection out of those points.

Axes already causes you to out damage both swords and maces even when you are getting only 1 extra hit from cleave.

There are actually quite a bit of situations in which cleave is very good, sometimes you just need to take out that high powered summoner or that demon casting torment or whatever and hitting all his buddies while you cut him down makes a world of difference.

Honestly they are fine.
