Definitely worth using the Storm Dragon Hide; it's got a fairly high encumbrance rating though, so you'll want to train up your armour skill. Luckily, HO's have a good aptitude for it. And IIRC, doesn't Beogh add further benefits on top of that? He may be worth worshipping instead of Pakellas. Or Dith, if you stick with crossbows.

Thanx, Covenant.  I enchanted the hide and am now wearing Storm Dragon Armour.  Took the nearest stairs down to D:3 and ran into a small group of Orcs.  Stair-danced the Orc mage up to D:2 and shot a lot of holes in him, then tackled two other melee orcs.  Not noteworthy you might say.....but one had a +2 War Axe of Freezing.
So.  The question now is, do I train up Axes?  Or are axes still busted?  Or were they?

I worry about the largess from DCSS at the moment, I have rarely had this good a start.

Axes are not really shitty, I mean, they might require a lot more skill for a bit less damage, but they are ok, its not like you won't be able to kill all the stuff with a battleaxe of freezing taken from the first cold giant you find. Their main problem compared to polearms is availability - outside Okie and Trog you are more likely to find super polearms than super axes, but seriously, axes will be found eventually.

I mean sure, if you want a shield, then yeah, finding a broad axe is like impossible, but who goes 1-handed for axes?

Anyway, in this case, no skill war axing of freezing will be pretty effective popcorn slayer, so you could even not bother with 4 levels of axe right now, and focus instead on crossbows, fighting and armour... that would give you more time to bump into Pikel or whatever...

Thanx for the advice guys, I haven't really played since .10 or .11, so all of the changes are a bit beyond my ken atm.
One thing I had done at the start was to set my skills to Fighting, (3.8 now and 9%), Armour, (2.1 and 27% with focus), and Crossbows, (5.1 and 70%).
I have not seen any shields yet, though I have 2.1 skill, so it might be an option.

I've picked up 50-odd arrows so far, and over 30 poison needles, just in case I need back-up ranged, just need to find a bow.  I used to throw needles way back when, I might try again, though my throwing skill is 0.0, so will be a desperate gamble if I need to.

Anyway, time to finish D:3 and see what happens, thanx again for the advice.

Edit:  only walked about a hundred steps and got waylaid by more Orcs, one of whom exhorted me to become a disciple of Beogh, so, "Meh, okay", and now it's on.

Attacking the orc hits all of the enemies.
Attacking the kobold also hits the orc, but not the goblin or the rat.
Attacking the rat also hits the goblin and the orc, but not the kobold.

E: I tried playing with an axe and this is completely wrong. Ozarck is right.

Yeah, I've always had good results with axes. First completion was with a demonspawn gladiator, went most of the game with a hand axe of electrocution.

I opened a door to a small room, expecting some kind of altar. As soon as I opened the door, the walls disappears and five confused internal flame'd sheep appeared. I backed away and then they exploded, flinging flesh chunks everywhere.

Yep, another Xom altar.

For a change of pace, I started up a centaur wanderer, everything was going fine until the third level where I chanced upon a set of Centaur Barding.  First time I have ever gotten barding from the dungeon ... ... while playing a centaur.
Now, RNGesus will do one of two things - kill the centaur on the next level, or, gift him with a set of barding every level for the rest of the game, none of which will be better than what he already has.

I was getting a lot of arbelasts last dungeon - i had decided to train up throwing and bows, because of a +10 sling and a +3 bow. I feel your pain.

Also, I gotta stop taking chances. Winning means running more often than I enjoy.

my worst d:1 death ever was from a freaking centaur

before that, i thought d:1 was a respite from absurd OOD monsters for the first 2-3 xp levels

I still regularly die to D:1 gnolls with branded polearms. Usually you're not going to have a ton of great options to fight them and you can't exactly stair dance to fight them safely.

How good are Hill Orcish Necromncers of Beogh, by the way? Will Animate Dead attempt to desecrate Orcish corpses that are in view as well as normal ones?
