I no longer worry about being banished because its never happened to me and I figure it would be an entertaining death if nothing else.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

Elven halls usually aren't that bad[I haven't played the new condensed 0.18 one though]. If I die there, its usually because I don't have Airstrike/Iron Shot/Invisibility to deal with the Hall of Blades and end up getting sliced and diced. Or I guess to a sorcerer's Corrosive Bolt, since I rarely end up with an rCorr item that I can wear consistently. Have gotten banished there a few times, but managed to escape all but once.

You could see a spectral elf and a lost soul.

Well, since we are talking about elven halls here, I just lost a deep elf Ice elementalist to a deep elf death mage. Well not exactly a death mage but his lost soul reincarnation (I killed the original with two bolts of cold). My guy was pretty good too, he had haste castable, he only needed the spell slots to memorize it. He had all those fancy books you see in the morgue. He had all of these awesome spells that only needed spell levels to be casted (I had put enough experience in the respective schools to get them castable). What I should have done was use my wand of teleportation, wand of heal wounds, last scroll of blinking, etc. ANYTHING other than just standing there channeling like an idiot!

If I had full mana I probably would have been able to beat him, but killing the death mage and his flunkies seriously drained me. What I hate about losing in runs like these is the fact that I know it's gonna be a while before I get a character this successful again.

I no longer worry about being banished because its never happened to me and I figure it would be an entertaining death if nothing else.

Lucky. Sonja banishing me is now my main cause of mid-game death. Pretty sure she's killed me more times than Sigmund (who I actually find pretty easy).

On the other hand, one of my berserkers that got banished actually managed to snag like three levels and the rune (!), managing to escape at around L18. Whereupon they got their face punched in by the horde that had surrounded me prior.

Its Sonjas' curare needles that usually get me, if anything.

I honestly think that I'm finally becoming good at this game. Of my 0.17 high score list, six out of the top ten slots[One of which is even a 15-rune win], are all from this February or January. The top twenty are even more biased, with fifteen of them being from the past couple months. My highest scoring run, annoyingly, was literally the first 0.17 game I played AFTER the tournament.

@heydude6:

That always sucks. Although you were probably laden with enough mutations that it was a foregone conclusion. -20% HP on a Deep Elf makes you an honourary Felid, but without the speed and extra lives.

More unrelated, the syntax on your killers' attribution is kind of weird. It counts the ghost elf death mage as a creatured summoned by the death mage

Phew! Just got to level 22 on a ziggurat. Bailed out after having to fight 4 orbs of fire with almost no wand of healing charges left. I am terrified at what level 27 would look like.

Should I make sure I'm at level 26 before taking the Orb of Zot?  I've got a game going that looks like I might make it to it (I've only managed to pick it up once before).

If you were worshiping a lategame god that grants kill regen, and spamming Glaciate, sure.

The only time I've gone more then halfway through a Ziggurat is on that one Dungeon Sprint map, but big AOE attacks. Tornado, Glaciate and Fire Storm are the big ones. Shatter works too, as long as most of the enemies aren't flying. Apocalypse, Disaster Area or even maybe Slouch would probably work too, although they all have prohibitive costs attached when you're not in Sprint. As for survival? Death's Door + Borgnjor's or worship of Makhleb[TSO might work too, for undead or demon floors] while killing all the things hella quick. Either being undead or statue/gargoyle would probably be needed against all the torment and sources of regeneration would help a lot, if your torment protection method doesn't preclude them.

TL;DR: This is where pure melee characters are at their weakest.

Congrats! First win is always the most fun. :P And Gargoyle Fighter isn't exactly easy mode, either. They've got a lot of strengths, but they need to tread really carefully around a lot of things[Smiting, Hellfire & Earth Magic are the big ones]. I'd say they require no small amount of skill to maneuver properly, although they are very very effective when they are.

That said, my current character is a GrMo of Chei, using Unarmed Combat. And Gargoyles definitely have it easy in a few specific areas. The Shoals are really easy when you can fly and can't be drowned and the Snake Pits aren't nearly as hard with poison immunity. Since I've lost my fair share of characters to both sources, this is a big deal.

I had no idea Octopode crushers could do that kind of damage, especially through very high AC. Took a bunch of damage from wading through waist-deep tentacled monstrocities to bop an annoying lich and then this kid showed up. I thought I'd at least try to kill it before blinking away and/or healing. Honestly, I kind of thought octopode crushers were a joke monster incapable of actual damage before this.

My recent run has taught me that if you're worried about poison worship Zin.  Vitalization gives poison immunity and costs 1-2 piety so as long as you stop to pick up some gold now and again you can go through all of Snake/Spider without ever having it of.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

A question on dungeon sprints. Are these things meant to be only beatable with a certain race and class, after having knowledge of all the rooms beforehand?
