Are you going to be sneaking around or what?

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

How the hell does Okawaru's algorithm work?! I have mainly been using maces with about half my experience in crossbows (so maces~ 14, crossbows ~6) and I'm a gargoyle, sow hat does he give me? A cape of poison resistance, some bolts, and a bow and arrows. I have not fired a single arrow all game and I'm poison resistant. No Sight of a god gift for my highest states, armor and maces.

I also screwed around with a mage using Okawaru, thought that maybe I would get some nice robes, staff/polearms, boots, etc....Nope. Nothing but throwing weapons. I had 0 exp in throwing, never even touched them.

It looks there were a ton of updates since I last played but they seemed to have overlooked one of the most infuriating parts.

Clearly, the solution is to worship Xom. That way you know the god gifts are meant to mess with you.

Xom was made pretty tame over time, to the point of almost (almost) being a genuine benefit. Old Xom was horrible, to the point of spawning multiple demons on top of you right after a fight, those hostile summons are now pretty bounded. Also Xom had this nice habit of irresistibly confusing you in the middle of fights, that effect is now actually blocked by the right amulet.

I wasn't talking about Xom screwing you over maliciously, but it messing with you benignly, similar to Okawaru seemingly messing with Micro102 by showering them with useless gifts. Stuff like "choko {god gift}" is what makes Xom a fun god, even if that particular example is no longer available.

Just want to cry; lost my first [legit] L27 to a seriously YASD.

Minotaur Fighter rocking rF+++, rCold+++, rNeg+, rPois, MR++++, Reflect, Clarity, and See Invis with 47/27/34 in default gear (excluding a ring swap slot, even!), 8/15...

Dead because I was trying to change tabs in the middle of Cocytus with Ctrl-PageUp, except I missed the Ctrl, which sent me walking off into a bad spot, at a bad time, from which I couldn't recover. ;_;

Edit: Oh, and has anybody seen that new(?) unrandart reflect shield? Don't remember the name, but the flavor text was interesting; it mentioned being able to reflect things that would pierce lesser shields or less substantial than most spells.

Haven't seen that shield but it sounds very, very useful. If only it could block Torment as well!

I want to say it was called the warlock's mirror, and was a +6, Reflect shield.

On the subject of torment, what do you (or anybody, really) think of taking Kiku into Hell, as a carryover from using him as mummy curse protection from the Tomb? (I would've probably taken Jiyva as a carryover, had I spawned an altar outside of the pit, though in retrospect, it probably would've been more useful if I remembered that Zin can block hell effects. Ah well. Die and learn.)

You mention it was your first L27 - it might be safer to focus on winning a three-rune game before going for all 15 runes. In the same vein, MiFi is great for a standard 3-5 rune game, but not quite as ideal for extended.

Oh, I have a handful of 3/15s, but they all finished before 27, usually around 26.7. There may have been a few stray 27s a while back, but the last time I was on DCSS was before .9. Which I vividly remember, because of so many early starvation deaths from wielding a cursed blunt weapon...

So yesterday, I decided to play a deep elf ice elementalist but I accidentally misclicked and rolled up a high elf instead. From there, I went on to have my my most successful elf caster run before being killed by resting near a door that lead to a room filled with large abominations.

And this made me think.

High elf vs deep elf?

What makes high elfs better and what makes deep elfs better? Are there advantages to choosing a full high elf caster compared to a full deep elf caster?

You can fake being able to run on water. You can't fake looking cool when you break your foot on a door and hit your head on the floor.

To me, what makes High Elves good is their high Intelligence and magic aptitudes combined with good to decent combat aptitudes and a not-atrocious health pool. All Deep Elves can do is magic, but they do it pretty damn well. I rarely play Deep Elf, since they're just WAY too squishy. Not only do they have an inherent penalty to health, they also have trouble levelling Fighting to make up for that. You can keep at a distance with your magic, but too many things have smiting or dangerous ranged attacks for that to be a reliable defense mechanism. High Elves, when they resort to melee combat, don't wilt like Deep Elves do. They actually make powerful, if squishy, swordsmen with only medium skill investment. Whereas Deep Elves suck at almost all weapons and armour, with their best skills at 0. I honestly much prefer Tengu blasters over Deep Elf blasters. They've got almost as good aptitudes for destructive magic, better combat aptitudes and some decent racial mutations while having the same base health.

TL;DR : Deep Elves make better "pure" casters, that's for sure. But even the purest caster often finds themselves in melee with some obnoxious nerds every so often and needs to A: Not die and B: Deal out some hurt without using MP. High Elves are better at that and are more robust against getting murdered in ranged combat. Tengus combine the best of both worlds with good combat and magic aptitudes and better survivability then a Deep Elf.

I enjoy deep elf blasters a lot because of how great they are offensively. But it feels so much more dangerous to play one. If you take one wrong step you can get completely fucked especially if you haven't covered all of your bases (escape spells, utility spells, and offensive spells from a variety of schools). Better players than I likely don't have as much issue. Over-committing happens so quickly with a deep elf that it's hard to see coming. Early game example, letting an orc warrior get in melee range so you can sticky flame him (you'll get 1 shot). Mid game example, constriction and/or berserk. Taking a single wrong step near archers or liches. But you'll be able to learn the big spells much more quickly which is great if you can survive long enough. I think the earliest I've gotten firestorm to work on a deep elf was during Vault.

High elves are safer blasters that just take a bit longer to get rolling. You have more room for mistakes and can rely more on amazing artifact weapons you find. It's easier to get into ringmail and hold a shield while still being able to cast everything. You can eventually do everything a deep elf can do, it just takes more time with the added benefit of survivability and versatility. In other words high elves suck and deep elves are the best race, and shame on you for considering playing any other race because let it end in hellfire. Fictitiously racist?

Maybe.

I heard the blink spell is good for escaping, then I found out it likes to repeatedly blink you into either dead ends or next to enemies.

It is very cheap and it IS great for getting distance between you and that mob so you can run away.

No one said it was good for escaping to a safe place. ;)
