Wait, isn't magic school just as effective for staves as evocations? If I go for Evo instead of Air will I raise Air fast enough to get Tornado by the time I need it? And yeah, I'd like to get some Stealth and Fighting, but I'm not sure if I can afford the XP, the entire Orc just gave me enough for 4-5 levels of Staves, and there were a couple of Orc Knights there which I think are worth a decent amount. I'm just really worried that if I stop pushing my primary magic schools I'll get into a situation where my spells are inadequate for the threats I'm facing. How far can my current spell selection take me anyway?

Also, I'm not quite sure I want to stick with light armour. I've found a decent randart +2 scale mail (rPois, rC+, MR++, Dex+2). Not sure if it's worth training armor for.  The resistances are nice, but so is the regen from troll armor.

I've always loved raising evocations, given I've found something like a lamp of fire. They are just so powerful (and more importantly, free to use!).

Thats a cool scale mail, but by this point I'd be having the same doubts - +2 scale is not much AC at XL17. Of course, you're using a +2 TLA so I guess it's not much different. You really should be on the lookout for something better, though - +regen is good, but something like a mottled dragon armour will be better when enchanted up - 4 base AC is kinda bad. The fact your AC and resists are kinda lacking is going to put you in some painful situations later on.

Maxing out the magic school is not enough to apply the extra damage on every hit.

18 Air + 14 Evo is better than 27 Air + 3 Evo. Both give max chance, but maxing out a magic school isn't necessary for 9th level spells.

Going from 20 to 27 in a skill requires more exp than going from 1 to 20. And 14-15 evocations is useful for all characters. Evocation items, like the crystal ball of energy (needs at least 14 to be reliable) or phial of floods, are very powerful. Raising evocations also increases your staff's damage.

You can actually get banished in Swamp if a spriggan spawns with a distortion weapon. It's really rare, but it can happen.

Yeah Spriggans really messed up my whole "Wow I Friggin Love Swamp" Lair branch mantra. Those, and Thorn Hunters. I keep forgetting how dangerous they are ["Lol non-Oklob plants!!!] and being amazed at how much damage one hit can do. Checking it in the Wiki, it's 3d18 which is definitely not insignificant.

In other news, after miserably failing in the Crawl Tourney, I decided to prove to myself that I'm not that bad of a player.

Started a NaWz because I've only won Wall-Of-Bricks melee Nagas, and decided to go with Ash again, since he seemed nice when I tried in the tourney.

First two rings I find - Wizardry and Magic Power. Soon after - Potion of experience.

I did Lair up to 3, but couldn't go further because Imps and Conjure Flame aren't that good at dealing with Hydras.

After a few botched attempts to clear the Dungeon a Teleport lands me right in range of an Orange Crystal Statue... which has an un-IDd book two  tiles away. Read tele, and pray to god I can sneak up and get the book... BOOM! Book of Power.

I underestimated Cataclysm. It's more like Shatter on steroids. Too bad I can't use it more than once per fight.

Anyway, I was wondering why my tomahawks kept missing during the tournament. Well, now my tomahawks rarely miss and sometimes kill vault guards and cyclopes in 1 hit. And thanks to no inventory weight I'm currently carrying 50 boulderslarge rocks.

Quick question, is there a drawback (other than increased damage from the very rare airstrike caster) to permaflying with Tengu, or is it just like a passive movement speed/ev buff?

No cost at all besides airstrikes.  It is important to note that those treants in swamp can end your flight unexpectedly, which can actually be fairly dangerous if done in bad terrain.

You might want to fiddle with your .init file to force a "more" message when you see a titan or Air mage, though, because airstrike hurts.

Thanks to Ash, I have Tornado, ~16 Earth skill. I have a staff of Earth and a Staff of Air.

I also have a -4 Gloves of MR and +5 slaying, and the following rings:

{Wiz Int+1}

My current gloves are normal Of Strength.

My question is, how do I combine these, and which staff do I use as my main weapon. Do I even use a staff? I have a lvl 9 spell already, even if it's a bit meh for Zot, so I want to get my melee going before picking up Shatter and/or another level 9 spell.

Also I have access to various Dragon hides, can I get my cast going with a Fire Dragon, or should I just shrug it off and get a Swamp one?

Gaa, my Staff of Earth weilding DDEE took a vampiric lajatang off of Agnes in Swamp. That feels like basically the best weapon I could hope for, if I wanted to go melee. I was hoping to mainly go with spells though, and now I don't know what to do. I haven't found any Earth spells, apart from Shatter. I don't have brilliant defenses to feel comfy in melee. Swapping between my SoE and the lajatang makes me very hungry.

Does that sound like a plan?

I haven't found any Earth spells, apart from Shatter - that's the best earth spell. You don't need anything other than that, LRD and Stone arrow, although Crystal spear is awesome once you finally get it.

The thing is that you don't need to necessarily need to choose one or the other. You can go in with haste+stoneskin,  use shatter which will weaken everything, and then mop up with your awesome laj. Definitely get blink online, and phase shift once you get time, but you should be ready to take on most things with shatter+laj.

Definitely aim for Crystal spear eventually if you want to do more than 3 runes though.

I've got to ask if Wizard Labs are still actually in the game. I've never actually seen any in the game, and most of the articles on them are extremely out of date.
