Also, why didn't you use Ash's special ability to get M&F's XP into Axes, when you found the Mithril one ?

Mostly because i use both axes and maces/flail (the axe for the main killing stuff, the holy flail when demons and undead, Mara probably noticed when i switched :D and the morningstar when i need electric resistance) so i keep high skill with both.

If i transfered the xp of one category into another, wouldn't this mean my character would much less effective when he was switching to the weapon that skill would then have gone down ?

Additionally it's the major reason i didn't cursed my weapon too, as i switch regularly.

Nevermind about my previous comment about throwing, it seems its part of the ranged combat overhaul and is true for all ranged weaponry.

I guess it does balance it out, at least early game. Truth be told, I'm having a hard time saying ranged is better than melee outside of kiting. Missing with your entire stack of starting arrows is entirely possible, I actually had to keep another weapon around because using a 0 skill mace was much more reliable than my centaur's bow. I'm not a fan, ranged combat is just frustrating to me now.

Will have to see what it's like at high skill, I suppose.

At a high skill level it's pretty much as Antioch says. It's a little bit tricky to get off the ground, and unlike in other games (or other skills in crawl) it's pretty much impossible to *only* use ranged till at least mid game. I normally just use a good melee (anything decent/branded) weapon for the first few floors, using ranged to soften stuff up. Once my ranged is about lv.10 or so and I've got heaps of arrows then you can really go to town on stuff.

Once you've got it going and a good supply of arrows/bolts its fantastic - it's pretty much like having bolt of fire/cold/venom and mystic blast all hunger free, plus silver for imps/demons, and dispersal for if stuff gets too close. Add in Portal projectile and you've got an incredibly powerful smite-type ability.

I've only ever used throwing as a way of softening up enemies (as crossbows/slings/whatever can be for a melee build) and it works great. Taking down an ogre to half health before it gets to you can be the difference between life or death early game, and even in late game being able to take of 1/3 health for little skill investment is great.

Maybe its just the weapon? I noticed that the short bow, even with ~8 or so skill, did almost nothing over 20 or so shots to ijyb with chainmail (edit: ringmail, sorry. chainmail wouldve made much more sense). In fact, pretty much any opponent with AC was nearly invulnerable to me. Coupled with the accuracy, a lot of things managed to crawl across the screen to me unscathed. It just doesn't feel right.

I'll try ignoring the bow for a few floors, too used to how godlike ranged combat used to be.

Apparently with the ranged stat decoupling XBows are also good.
Sling are pretty bad though from what I heard.

Yeah, in my limited experience, throwing is pretty useful, especially if you're with oku or trog since they will just gift you tons of branded javelins/tomahawks.

This is troubling. Does anyone have general Abyss advice? I've never made it out, and I'd really hate to lose this character.

Seeing this thread around made me want to get back into this.
Throwing used to be a great way to soften up, or even dispatch, enemies from far away on the early game(which is all I can reach) for melee characters with no aptitude for magic and no other ranged weapons. It's really underwhelming now.

Anyway, I'm a scrubby scrub who plays DsMo and * of Ashenzari almost exclusively. Currently on a MiFi around dungeon 7, thinking if I should delve into the lair right now.

My Abyss experiences, when i had a character unprepared for being banished are the following :

- i'm lucky and i find an exit fast enough.
- i'm less lucky and after long time walking around , i have a lots of enemies accumulating with time that are following me and ... i find an exit, though i'm heavily mutated by then.
- i'm not lucky and whatever i do, i don't find any exit and the legion of accumulated monsters finally get me.

To me it seems to be more about luck than strategy , at least when your character is not already near to end-game ready.
Just stay away from portal leading further into the Abyss that you find more often than actual exits

I actually kill most of the stuff in the abyss. Some of the nasties (like that blue blob thing that multiplies) aren't worth the time, but by XL19 you can definitely do away with most of the demons and abominations that occupy the abyss. Goes doubly so for anything that mutates, as you can't just have them follow you around.
