Not sure if this has been addressed before, but what exactly does Strength and Dexterity do? Because I'm always confused about what exactly to get on non-caster/assassin characters. Asking because I have a MiGl with a vamp executioner axe.

Actually str helps with str weighted weapons more, dex helps with dex weighted weapons more

Dexterity is generally the better stat as it helps shiends and evasion as well

You need str to wear heavy armours (wiki to find exact # needed) I think its 18 for plate and 27 for golden dragon

Well, not really.
That was mroe or less the case in previous versions, but since 0.14 of 0.15, the "soft cap" has been softened even more, and, even if strength helps reduce the armor penalty (to EV, precision, and spellcasting failure) each point helps less than the previous.

About increasing casting chances while wearing armors, what is the best solution for hybrids overall :
- increasing strength to lower the armor spellcasting penalty ?
- increasing intelligence to lower the spellcasting failure chance ?
- don't focus only on one but increase both (even if it means spellcasting failure will lower less and armor spellcasting penalty will lower less due to str or int being lower than if you focused point on only one) ?

Why does crawl start throwing randarts into my lap the moment I play a gargoyle.

Argh, too much confidence and not paying enough attention to that damn orc priest.
My level 11 gargoyle with nice items was doing great, battled Joseph and a couple of imps successfully, then an orc came that i nearly insta shot.
Another one, a warrior this time, bad luck i guess as i lost half my health on this one, but destroyed it in the end.

Moved in the corridor instead of resting, stupid confidence mistake, ran into a group of orc with a warrior and a priest, attracted them in a corridor, the warrior was first, fortunately i destroyed it quickly, then the weak orcs, no problem, except that the orc priest already shot me twice with his smite power.

Just when i thought it may be time to finally drink those curing potions that i didn't thought about drinking up to when it was too late ...

Don't feel bad, orc priests are pretty nasty. I get killed by them all the time too ;_;

For fun i looked into the last few crawl tournaments to see the monsters that are top killers

Spoiler: 0.14-tourney (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: 0.13-tourney (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: 0.12-tourney (click to show/hide)

the orc priest is always in the top5 and is the uncontested king of ranged player killing with this nasty smiting

Dex weighted weapons, at best, are 50/50 str/dex weighted. All other weapons gain more from Str.

How does an adder get a ranged kill? Does poison count as a ranged attack?

Orc priests I can see taking people down, but how do you lose to a gobbo or a kobold. :S

Kobold are sometime having blowgun with some nasty poison or sometime carry dagger with a poison brand.
For some low health new character, that can be very dangerous

Hobgoblins are actually pretty dangerous to a level 1 or 2 character, they hit quite hard.  Kobolds can spawn with short swords of draining/disto/electrocution to wipe you out in one hit, as well as needles.
