Yeah, I would probably choose ice cave too. It seems to me at least that it has better loot on average, although the volcano usually has a ton of fire branded stuff, so if you want more rF then you should choose it.

I was doing pretty well on buffs and escapes, and I found a +3 mottled dragon armor that I'm using now, sitting at AC:42 EV:14 SH:6, and I can wear my hat of the high council with it.

If I apply my buffs it gets up to AC:48 EV:22 SH:6 plus shroud and repel missiles. (and swiftness, blink, and control teleport)

I'm going to just dump my skills into dodging and air magic for the time being, my armor skill is up to 16 now.

Quick update, I killed a pearl dragon and dumped my 10 enchant armors into it, puts me up to AC: 62, EV: 19 once buffed.

It's odd but even after so many years, there's always some feeling of satisfaction when it happens :

I guess the memory of my old days when i was new to crawl and lost so many characters to that damned Sigmund are still lingering in there :D

edit : later

my spriggan assassin is still doing good, currently trying to clear Lair.
Though unfortunately despite i have it rather high by now, stealth is still completely unreliable

And worse, so far i didn't found great stabbing device too, my best one is a dagger of poison +1 so i'm reduced to either be very lucky and have stealth working nice, or be very unlucky and i have to kite with poison for a while.
For poison-resistant/immune enemy, it's worse, i had my wands but i'm running low, i really hope to find some really good stabbing device as that dagger isn't going to pull me through what's coming soon

I am (perhaps wrongly, I don't know - we've had a team in previous years) trying to get a team started on the other board that I'm on, which is why I'm not playing with you guys, but I thought that I'd share some of my thoughts on my current character:

my spriggan assassin is still doing good, currently trying to clear Lair.

Stealth will always be somewhat unreliable and you definitely need a skill for dealing with stuff that can't be stabbed. With Spriggans you need to use speed to your advantage and choose something ranged, or use go down the hexes route.
With high enough stealth you should be able to do large parts of levels without waking anyone up, giving you a massive XP boost that you can funnel into your other skills.

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.

I am (perhaps wrongly, I don't know - we've had a team in previous years) trying to get a team started on the other board that I'm on, which is why I'm not playing with you guys, but I thought that I'd share some of my thoughts on my current character:

Gr is indeed stupidly good. +2-20 AC, +30% GDR in Robes/Hides and +10% in other armors, poison immunity, rE+, rRot, rN+, rTorment in trade for -20% HP and slightly meh aptitudes. They are deep dwarf-level EEs from the getgo (and eventually become much better) and quickly ramp up into minotaur-level tabbers. Not to mention that the elec immunity is actually really good now that there are more elec enemies. Poison immunity is in a similar state now that rPois alone doesn't really do a ton unless you're being pelted by venom bolt or something.

Although I do admit beogh smite rips apart gargoyles.

Stealth will always be somewhat unreliable and you definitely need a skill for dealing with stuff that can't be stabbed. With Spriggans you need to use speed to your advantage and choose something ranged, or use go down the hexes route.
With high enough stealth you should be able to do large parts of levels without waking anyone up, giving you a massive XP boost that you can funnel into your other skills.
the speed indeed saved my spriggan hundred of time for dealing with non-sleeping and poison resistant enemies, if my guy wouldn't have been a spriggan, he would have been dead a long time ago

Well DDs are clearly better.  They have 50% more HP, a really powerful item in their starting inventory, a better form of defense and a mostly irrelevant drawback.

Gr are good but I'd say they're worse than the "classic" melee races like Mi and HO.  Having a lot of AC makes it easy to take on loads of weak melee monsters at once, but when you start getting hit by really hard attacks you'd rather have the HP.

DD's are better for an experienced player, but the 'not being able to heal on rest' thing is really tricky for people starting out (especially if they don't choose a good class) who tend to get badly hurt often.

Gargoyles have resistances to most of the nasty stuff that you're likely to encounter, and give a lot of room for error with their good AC.

I think if you 1) know that evo boosts your MP and 2) are not afraid to use your wand then DD will be the easiest race to win with, the lack of regenerating HP is much less of a problem than you'd think.  This is particularly true if you go Makhleb (who's a good option for any character build anyway).

The only Gargoyle resist that could possibly matter to a beginner is rPois, and I don't think that's much of a game changer (particularly now it's been nerfed).  AC is nice, of course, but I think having enough HP to not get shot down in two hits from some magic-using enemy is better.

On the other hand, if you run away from too many fights, you miss out on XP and possibly items, and end up under-levelled. Resulting in more and more of the monsters at your current depth being dangerous, and eventually all the fights are hard fights.
This is how I've always felt. I can't stand leaving anything unkilled, and I feel like if I move on to the next floor without killing everything I'll be too weak to be able to survive. Death by a thousand missed 1XP drops.

question , with my spriggan assassin i have been really getting bad weaponry loot, so to keep my stabbing good i had to stick with what i had best, and while i was clearing Lair it was a +1 dagger of poison and a +0 short sword of draining.
And only 1 scroll enchant weapon 1 (the one i used to get +1 ) , it's all the bad luck i had with that character in weapon loot.

But still alive while clearing the last level of Lair (i got the one with the big cave full of canine and bear monsters) very thanks to the Yredelemnul "animate dead" that kept my supporting army strong enough to deal with the horde until they were all gone, i found this :

Code: [Select]
the +9 long sword "Laep" (weapon) {freeze, rElec rF+}
(You found it on level 8 of the Lair of Beasts)

It has been specially enchanted to freeze those struck by it, causing extra
injury to most foes and up to double damage against particularly susceptible
opponents. It can also slow down cold-blooded creatures.

   It protects you from fire.
   It insulates you from electricity.
That is rather amazing, while 2 handed (so no shield but i found none anyways, yeah great luck ... ) and i have 6 in long blade skill thanks to the crosstraining (in opposed to 12 in short stabbing devices)
So in comparison to the crap i had, i'll switch happily.

But i'm wondering at that point, in past when stabbing was a skill and not an averaging of stealth+the weapon skill , long blade while not having as highly damaging bonus as short sword were still having some nice stabbing bonus.
Is it still true in 0.15 ?

edit : must be true, i managed to clear Orc : 4 (thanks a lot to Yredelemnul animated dead i must say) , it was the one with an absurd amount of crossbow using orcs and i managed to one shot stab many creatures there.
I managed to get an insane amount of bolts from that floor :

I guess i will not worry about ammo for a  long time :D

The Ten Rune Challenge is fun. It's the least gimmicky Sprint map. I took the shortest path to victory. Next time, I'll grab the other runes before touching the Orb. Fedhas' Mad Dash is the only map left. Then, I have only 5 races and 4 gods left to win in regular Crawl.

I think if you 1) know that evo boosts your MP and 2) are not afraid to use your wand then DD will be the easiest race to win with, the lack of regenerating HP is much less of a problem than you'd think.  This is particularly true if you go Makhleb (who's a good option for any character build anyway).

Gargoyles are immune to noxious clouds/miasma, resistant to poison and elec, and gain permanent flight early. All of which makes getting the lair and vault runes simpler. They're pretty easy for a 3-rune game. I prefer deep dwarves, but they're slightly more complicated.

Yeah you can rattle off benefits for Gargoyles all day, but if you stop and think they're not actually that important.  There's only a couple of enemies that use noxious gases (mainly just Swamp Drakes, which only appear half the time) or electricity (storm dragons and electric golems, plus Nikola I guess), it's hardly a major factor.
