For the Gargoyle Fighter mentioned above, getting Banished by various Deep Elves actually saved my life several times when I was going through the earlier floors of the Vaults for experience, and trying to find a decent amulet in the Elven Halls.

Made it to D:8 as a Centaur Hunter, got swarmed by killer bees and the stairs were too close together for me to avoid them all. Tried to strike them down with wands, a great sword, my bow, everything. Burned 5 healing potions and all my cures trying to kill just one, and had to run anyways. Not to mention when I ran upstairs some killer WASPS had spawned as well, somehow! Man that felt like such a cheap death. I was nailing Goliath Beetles and Ogres and Orc mobs before then without taking so much as a scratch!

Yeah, that sucks. If they were next to the upstairs, read a teleport scroll before going down. Prepare to read another if it puts you in a bad situation. If they were next to the downstairs, you can yell by hitting t twice. That'll get them to come to you. Lead them away, then teleport and go around. If the game didn't give you teleport or blink... well, gg.

Yeah, when you see killer bees/wasps, the word you need to remember is "killer", not bees.
If you're lucky enough to have a fireball wand, they're extremely good agaisnt those, as you can aim for a specific square to be sure to have the fireball here, and the zone damage can not be dodged.
Qazlal is extremely good at killing those, for the same reason.

As a matter of fact that's what I used while I still had them in a corridor. *miss* *miss* *miss* *miss* I also tried a Lightning but that had about the same effect.

That's what I did. :v Used up my only blink getting away from the initial swarm, then my only teleport to make good my escape after I ran upstairs. Split the group a bit, which would've been useful, but like I said the stairs leading down were clustered so no matter which I used either group'd spot me. Hadn't cleared the floor below quite so much because of them so I had not a chance.

Didn't know I could yell though! That's would've been just the ticket I think.

My best run was a MiBe :P
I got to the end of Lair and died when two slime monsters merged into an enormous slime monster, which one-hitted me.
I play on CAO too.
We often talk about crawl in #bay12lb on irc.darkmyst.net, so hang out there if you want.

E:
And yeah, killer bees are incredibly nasty. I once went down stairs into a swarm of killer bees, a unique AND an orc pack. On one of those dungeon levels that is a square 5-wide hallway where you can't hide anywhere.
I died.

I personally like playing on CZSO, mostly because Firefox's autofill makes it really convenient to get to.

Does anyone have any tips for playing as a Transmuter? It's so frustratingly difficult. I don't think I've ever gotten a single rune as a Tm but half of my starts were Tm.

Transmuters are hard to play :/
What race do you choose ?

I like my transmuters merfolk.
They have really high dodging and transmutation, and nice fighting/unarmed combat.

You do not have to put many levels in spellcasting : you do not aim for low hunger, but for just enough slots to learn the useful spells.
You should not aim to learn blade hands in Lair : Ice form is good enough there. It can slow cold-blooded creatures (most threats in Lair), and deals nice damage.
You need to have nice levels in unarmed combat, and dodging is always valuable, as is fighting a bit later.

You must be thinking of a wand of fire, not a wand of fireball. Fireball can't be dodged, it'll never miss. That's basically why they are so good against bees.

I see. You're probably right.

This is always a problem - they're probably the least straight forward class out of anything.

Draconian Transmuters are probably your best bet, especially if you get one with a good synergy (like Grey for +2 earth). They've got good natural armour, a breath attack, and cheap dragon form.
The key is to make really good (and over zealous) use of consumables early on. Transmuters become pretty much unstoppable later on, so don't worry if you feel you're burning through tons of stuff. Throwing random stuff (especially tomahawks) is really good, as you can normally whittle things down to half or at least 2/3 health, which is very useful when you're getting into slugging matches with stuff.

Make sure to mainly focus on unarmed and just get your spells up to above contamination failure point (around 20% or a bit less). You hardly need any MP as you'll need to cast transmutations once or twice per fight max.

Transmuter got nerfed recently as spider form is no longer fast.

Don't forget you start with Sticks to Snakes in your spell book - it can be really useful for either swarming a threatening monster or making meat shields while you run away.

The Spider Form change does hurt a bit, but I think it's still very good for a level 3 spell.  It hugely improves your damage output and your defenses.

This seems like solid advice to me.  Unarmed combat in general is weak at low levels but becomes amazing later, and Blade Hands makes it even better.  Going with a tough species like a Dr is a good choice (Merfolk also works well).  One thing to point out is that colour doesn't actually matter that much - it can be a bonus, but Dr is a good Tm species regardless of what colour you roll.

Oh right and the other crucial piece of advice is to remember to use your forms.
