Uh that happened like two versions ago, and it was a clear improvement over the previous system.

No I mean the recent change that changed the formula behind armour penalties.

That happened two versions ago (in 0.13).

e: looking it up the new formula and the new term were introduced in April 2013, which replaced the 0.10 system (which would severely penalize you if you didn't have 3x more strength than an armour's evasion penalty).

Eh?
Didn't we just talk about some recent update on that recently? On how it got reduced to a simpler formula to make strength more useful?

I never said it was recent, I pointed out that your advice was a few versions out of date.  Although you've apparently identified a way in which this non-change will ruin the game?

If the change wasn't recent then my advice wasn't out of date.
Still, I have to read up on some of the changes to make sure.

Could we not get personal here? I'm not accusing people like you on ruining the game either.

I don't see where Mindmaker said it'd ruin the game? He only said that there were loose ends to tie up.

I think you've got a bit of a chip on your shoulder about this Leafsnail, you obviously love the changes - and that's great - but please try to understand that some people have a differing opinion.

So. I've got a Demonspawn Assassin off the ground, finally.

He's got 13 Dodging, 6 Armour and 14 Stealth. Strength is 13, or 18 with my +5 ring of strength. Relying a lot on stabbing, using a +6 +8 artifact dagger of distortion.

Acquirement just gave me an randart +22 crystal plate armour {Str+4 Acc+4}.

...This might be a silly question, but... should I use it? Would it interfere with stealth?

Skip up an early +22 CPM? Hell no! Use it, turn on armour immediately. Not sure what the str needed for one is, but considering its str +4 and you have a +5 ring you should have no problems. I'd probably start training something like longswords once your armour skill is reasonable, though. A +8 dagger of distortion is pretty good, but without stabbyness its not going to be very good later on.

I can tell you now that your assassin will die not that far into the game and you will feel like an idiot for not using that CPM. You might see an artefact like that once every dozen full playthroughs. It's really good!

+22 Crystal Plate..... I'd say go for it. That's pretty ridiculous.

With a demonspawn, you can use pretty much any strategy you want. That means you have an easier time than most other races to adapt to what you get (be it special loot or special mutation).
As others have said, it will give you really high AC.

What I would do is continue to play as an assassin (without wearing the CPA) while putting XP in Armor, and switch to it after a while. You'll also want to switch to longbaldes, as suggested, even if your dagger is good enough to last for a while (any special things on the dagger ?). You may want to wait until you find a nice longblade before switching (and put some XP in the skill before weilding it).

Holy hell, vaults is hard now. Just splatted a lvl24 MfBe swimming in great gear to a room with nothing but a handful of convokers. They summoned an army, locked the door behind me, and rekd me.

I gotta say, despite walking around with ten thousand potions and scrolls because of the inventory changes, the post-lair game is a lot harder than it used to be. The Abyss changes, Depths introduction, and addition of the different vault guards all make their respective branches a force to be reckoned with. No more tabbing your way to the orb!

As others have said, that's wayyyyyyy too good to pass up, especially early on. I'd go for a complete skill respec and turn into a fighter (which demonspawn are good at being). As Tompliss said, keep being an assassin till you get armor and long blades up to 4-5 and then just make the swap. That much AC will make the early game pretty straight forward, and the tools from being an assassin will help you along the way.

If you've not got a god yet, I'd suggest makhleb!

For a bit more info, I'm currently most of the way through Spider, having cleared Lair, Orc, and the Dungeon down to the Depths entrance. XL16.

I'm at max piety with Dithmenos, who... I'm not sure is any good for anything besides stealthy stabbing, but I could be wrong.

My current armour is a +3 leather armour of cold resistance. The dagger has {+Blink +Fly rN+} in addition to distortion. I also haven't found much of anything good in terms of long blades yet. Best are a +6 +1 scimitar of slicing in a shop, and a +3 +1 scimitar of flaming which Dith won't let me use.

I've already got 6 in armour (for some reason) so the transition might not be too painful. I've actually never switched gods before because I'm too scared of bad things happening, though, so that might be a factor. :P
