Quick question from a first-time Zinnite: I know he doesn't like Transmutations, given that all those books are red, but will he hate me for using Ignite Poison (Fire/Transmutation) ?
Does the spell not mention whether Zin approves of the spell or not? I know with some gods the description for spells or items mentions "X approves of this spell." or "X forbids the use of such ane vil item/spell/whatever."

Just downloaded latest trunk; I presume Djinn have been removed? There's now Vine stalkers who "cannot regain health from potions or devices; magical reserves absorb damage and they have a magic-restoring bite."

Also, apparently lava orcs were removed per the may 7 trunk notes but it's in this build I downloaded (windows tile build, says last updated may 14) so IDK.

Ah so it does, and so he does! This might actually turn out okay; I'm not sure what I'm doing with this character, but I should be able to get through Spider now...

I'm so addicted to the tower defense mode, it's so fun to watch my sentient plants melt people alive, and then swipe their equipment and put it into a giant pile. Amazing game, good work developers.

Running a Minotaur Fighter, took Okawaru at some point before Lair and found the +7 Singing Sword.
As i had no skill in long blade, i decided to explore more to grind some skill points for it before going to Lair (as a base damage 15 and the +7 bonus was really much much stronger than the +2 flail i was using so far) even with the big noise generated at that point i thought it would be really good for my melee-oriented guy.

So after clearing some levels i ran into Erolcha.

Good old Erolcha, i rushed and took out 1/3 of her health on a turn, another 1/3 on the 2nd turn, was preparing to destroy that unique on 3rd turn , except that ... Abyss
Damn !
But not so Damn ! because at only 7 tiles from my position there was a gate out of Abyss !

I started to move toward it, and i'm teleported to another region ... oh yeah i forgot the trolling anti-me code of Crawl :D

Anyways, the less i can say is that it was then completely hopeless, as i didn't found any other portal and got slowly but surely overwhelmed by insane amount of heavy casters/hitters that made sure i was running out of any healing and cure potion.

For the fun of it, the Abyss "transient" (as in "temporary" apparently) mutations i got before losing that guy  :

that's a nice list, and you have nearly all the worse (berserkitis, -20%HP, armour fits poorly, blurry vision, fast metabolism,...).

Wow, very nice Dr Feelgood. I know people can win the sprint maps, I just don't really understand how. I think I got a rune once on the 10-rune challenge, with a SpEn.

Anyway, my current DsWz of Ash is doing pretty well (two Lair runes, Elf clear, Vaults 1-4 clear, Depths 1-5 clear), but I feel like I need some guidance - I haven't been this far since the depths were added, and haven't seen the new and improved Vaults 5 - they removed the corners so that the corridors are no longer as safe, right?

Maybe I should try Slime instead, but I am not sure if freezing cloud and lightning bolt really cut TRJ ice these days.

Come to think of it though, I should have stopped and asked for assistance on Depths 3 or so, so that I could direct some XP towards whatever shortcomings you guys think my character is currently suffering from.

Also, I don't know what to forget to make room for Controlled Blink... I suppose I could dump any of conjure flame, call imp and potentially, Blink.
Should I learn PhaseShift, and risk stair-dancing Vaults 5? That doesn't sound like a terrible plan, especially if I find room for CBlink as well.

I wouldn't normally get both Poisonous and Freezing Clouds, but Sojobo was generated wearing an rC armour of some kind, and was comfortably out-damaging me.
Other spells I have book access to include Orb of Destruction, Tornado and Glaciate, but the latter two won't be anywhere near castable.

Any advice folks?

Your defences are low (well, I'm not used to casters) and stair-dancing in V:5 is very risky because of the stair-blockers.
Moreover, Ash's abilities won't help you there.

I don't know how casters are supposed to handle V:5's entrance, anyway ... :/

Abyssal rune ?

No way. I am severely allergic to the 'new' Abyss. I really don't understand how to survive there, and tend to die very quickly... This character recently survived a trip to A1 already, but going there voluntarily, and then diving? No chance.

Plan For Vaults 5: If I learn CBlink and PhaseShift, then I can PS and Haste up, use crystal ball, go down the stairs, CBlink to a corridor, run like hell, make a quick lap of one quadrant, CBlinking past the open corner if necessary, and then head back up the stairs, hopefully having killed/lead some of the Vault guards away in the mean time, and enjoy my glow mutations.

Plan for Slime: Get horrendously corroded, get TRJ down to half health, get surrounded by jellies, CBlink, escape, rinse and repeat until out of consumables?

Maybe do some of Crypt, try to train up some more defenses? I really don't know.

Wow, very nice Dr Feelgood. I know people can win the sprint maps, I just don't really understand how. I think I got a rune once on the 10-rune challenge, with a SpEn.

Anyway, my current DsWz of Ash is doing pretty well (two Lair runes, Elf clear, Vaults 1-4 clear, Depths 1-5 clear), but I feel like I need some guidance - I haven't been this far since the depths were added, and haven't seen the new and improved Vaults 5 - they removed the corners so that the corridors are no longer as safe, right?

Maybe I should try Slime instead, but I am not sure if freezing cloud and lightning bolt really cut TRJ ice these days.

Come to think of it though, I should have stopped and asked for assistance on Depths 3 or so, so that I could direct some XP towards whatever shortcomings you guys think my character is currently suffering from.

Also, I don't know what to forget to make room for Controlled Blink... I suppose I could dump any of conjure flame, call imp and potentially, Blink.

Recommended spells: Phase Shift, Control Teleport, Orb of Destruction, and Controlled Blink. You could live without Force Lance (especially if you have the fan of gales), Call Imp, Conjure Flame, and one of those cloud spells.

Edit: Yes, the corners of the vaults were removed. It doesn't change the difficulty much, since they removed the random groups of enemies in the corridors.

Nuke the guards with aoe spells, stair-dance while hasted, or teleport to a less crowded area on the level.

Vogonpoet, don't forget clouds disapear really fast when out of your vision, now, casting clouds and running is not as greaat as before ;)

I think I have two books of the clouds though, so I could certainly afford to get rid of one of them... I guess technically I should get rid of freezing cloud, and use bolt of cold more, for maximum resistance flexibility.

As for the Abyss, I don't know, I find the new monsters really hard work, and end up with no MP, surrounded, a lot more than I used to in the old one. Even with Ash, new Abyss scares the crap out of me. Lost a lot of dudes there.

Well, isn't freezing cloud your best spell against undeads and other Poison-resistant monsters ?
Because if you want to go in anything other than Vault/Abyss/Slime, you'll need it more than Poison cloud ...
