The problem of this spell though is that it makes me a bit more daring than usual
Also you should rely less on that spell in deeper dungeon/branches. It's damage starts from 2d6 (usually you get 2d7-9 by the time you start using it) and is capped at 2d15 that is about twice a starting damage.
Since dungeon inhabitants will raise heir health quicker, this will render your battlesphere less effective (but still useful).

Thanks, i couldn't find what exact damage it was doing, still even if it's capped at 2d15 it's not bad at all (considering it's a support, not a primary damage source)

This is one of the best vaults I've ever seen so far:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Those transparent walls were stone walls, but then they changed when I approached the altar.
"Ashenzari says, 'See what I see, mortal...'
You have a sudden vision of the Swamp and the Snake Pit!"
I'm almost considering worshipping him, but I like Sif Muna a little too much.

I discovered a vault like this one, a few runs ago, while auto-exploring. It was really surprising, seeing Nagas and Aligators at D:5 or so :D
anyway, Ashenzari can be really fun, but I doubt he's really good for octopodes : You need half your jewellery slots to be cursed to get the minor bonus to spellcasting. And that means 5 slots, for octos :/
On the other hand, you can get the dodge+sneak bonus really easily, with the lack of some armor slots.
And the Vision ability is the best one to cast fire/ice storms, anyway, or to preview rune vaults (which I think is more important for spellcasters than for fighters).

He may be even beter for felids, but I don't remember how the "curse bonus" react to fransformations :/

Actually, I've got this idea that Ash could be quite good for octopodes - you only need to wear a hat to be fully bound in armour, and if you play as a Wz, you start with a hat.

The jewelry thing isn't bad either, as with 5 cursed rings you can be partially bound and still have 4 swappable slots including an amulet.

Unfortunately whenever I play OpWz I have difficulty surviving long enough for Ash's bonuses to start taking effect.

I would have thought Felid was a bad species for Ash, as you can never be bound in weapons, shield or armour so can at most be lightly bound or something similar.

Yeah I've found OpWz of Ash to be ok... bind your hat and a crappy dagger and you're off. You do end up wearing some crap rings though :) Also, getting enough scrolls of curse jewellry can be a bit annoying. But Ash is so awesome.

The Ash praying is improved for octo and felids, as their RC-corruption will give more "Curse Jewellery". I think you get them more than 80% with octos, and simply 100% with felids ;)
So, as you can usually find 10 RC scroll by D:10, you should get enough jewellery cursed ;)

Hooray to me, I got my first rune ever (decaying)! With my DECj.
Now I am clearing Elven Halls. Got a book of geomancy and now thinking about how useful passwal is.
Does stasis blocks it?

Good job !
As my Deep Elf Conjurer is still alive and is now clearing Lair before going into a branch, i ran into the "Stone of Tremors", that's a new one to me, reading about it apparently if used it damage any monster that is near a wall in the level and may destroy some of the walls too, summoning 3 earth elemental to help me.

That sounds great, but unfortunately there's only 1 charge.

On the bot i read that you can refill it by gaining XP ?
Before i waste the charge , how much XP is required to get another one ? the bot does not mention it.

Ok, I cleared Elven halls, the loot is not that cool, except for staff of wizardry. Now I can take off my ring of wizardry and free slot for some other artifact ring I may find soon.
Aso I got manual of staves. Does Staves skill improves stave enhancing bonuses?

UPD: one more question: Does robe of the archimagi gives me wizardry (that badly stacks with rings/staves) or another status?

Gonna go clear that Snake pit!

Twice now my characters were blessed with awesome weaponry and twice were they killed while wielding said weaponry.
I'm trying HEGl with long blades because I want to try using exotic 2-handed long blades. My first guy got a +2, +1 elven falchion of electricution, then RNG gave me a yak on D4. I wasn't sure if there was more, but I carefully pulled it to the stares and brought it to D3. I thought I could handle it, but it 3 shot me because I'm not a attentive as I should be when fighting these guys.
Then my next character finds a +11, +4 artifact spear that had dragon slaying, +3 Dex, and 'unknown' on D4. I didn't want to risk wielding it and I didn't have identify scrolls. Next level down, I get killed by an iguana I thought I could take. I really need to pay more attention when fighitng things.

Wow, my Lair:8 was a Death Yak hell.

I can't say thanks enough to the Battlesphere spell now that i can't try to get more XP beyond D:14 due to the rune lock, those huge amount of death yaks were really something i don't think my deep elf conjurer could have beaten without the damage helper from the battlesphere shots.

And it was really a big luck that Vehumet granted me Frozen Clouds a bit before i went down to Lair:8 , that spell has been immensely helpfull against those damned death yaks to lower their health for my combined battlesphere+mystic blast  .

unfortunately the learning is a pain at Ice -4 due to me having got magma bolt a lot earlier and having trained then Fire

Actually yes, now that you mention it, I now remember my frustration with my last Ashtopode - every bloody scroll I prayed over was Curse Jewellery, and I couldn't curse my weapon until deep Lair, when I found my first curse weapon scroll :) I had twice as many curse jewellery scrolls as actual pieces of jewellery. But thats Ash for you - whatever character you play, cursing stuff will sometimes be frustrating at first. Once you get going though, she is just awesome.

/Okie, Vehumet and Ash. The only gods I ever won with. Damn I suck. Gotta get me at least a Trog win at somepoint. Why do my HOBe die so often in comparison to my MiGl? Stupid Crawl.
//grumble grumble grrr

Edit: @Robsoie:
Freezing cloud is always worth it though :) Even my fire elementalists like to pick it up. Along with swiftness, its just awesome win.

Aso I got manual of staves. Does Staves skill improves stave enhancing bonuses?
Nope. But if you use a staff sometimes, it may be good to train it a little, especially with a manual, and even more is you get some evocation skill too. It will let you get some "side" damage, for cases when you don't want to cast, or can't afford it...
Does robe of the archimagi gives me wizardry (that badly stacks with rings/staves) or another status?
A whole other status. The wizardry things make the spell easier to cast, without making them more powerfull. The Archmagi robe make the spells more powerfull, but doesn't make them easier to cast. And they stack.
The robe is a really great artefact, as long as you don't have your magic schools at high enough levels that you already get maximum spell power (you can see it on the "description" tab of your spell list, hitting "!" when on the list ('z' -> '?').

Then my next character finds a +11, +4 artifact spear that had dragon slaying, +3 Dex, and 'unknown' on D4.
The 'unknown' part is shown on your death screen when you didn't identify (or at least not all the effects) an item ;)

Oh, and now, my personnal part of the post :
This is my current character :
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I aiming to continue on the "armored hybrid, casting for ranged attack & support, slashing melee foes" path.
This means I may change armor for something a little bit eavier, but I don't want plate/GDA. And I want buckler/shield to keep the defence up in melee, counting on the spellcasting part to keep the damage-dealing high.

I "want" some more conjuration spells, but with less focus on fire (because of resists and immunities), but I may try to stay with vehumet for now to try & get FireStorm. About that part, I haven't played any character after level 15 with vehumet... Is he really usefull in late-game ? Do you think I should change God ? As I use many skills (fighting, axe, armor, shield, spellcasting, Conjuration, and Fire, maybe another element and/or charms/hexes later...), I think Ashenzari may be a good choice, or maybe TSO (if not going for poison but earth as secondary element, or simple pure conjurations) for an easier late-game ...

For my next actions :
I plan on Magic-Mapping Lair:8, to be sure to avoid any vault that may contain too many hydras (my axe is not flaming, so I killed the previous ones with conjure/throw flame only), then going to the Orc Mines, obviously. I had a lucky mutation (potion of mutat gave me rPois, +10%HP, AC+2... I loved it), so I may be able to go for the snake pit, especially since I have a TPcontrol ring stashed that may help in the deeper levels, against the vault snakes.
After that, I want to try getting the Abyss Rune, as I found a treasure trove requiring it. I think it may not be a really good idea now (but Orc+Snake may give me the lacking XP and stuff I need), but this trove is really tempting ...
Also, I got a "spare" scroll of acquirement. Should I use it soon (would say after Orc+snake), or wait until I unlocked the Trove ? What may be the most usefull (knowing that asking for a weapons may not give an axe, and even less so a one-handed, asking for armor may give a too-heavy-to-cast body armor, etc...) ? (even if it really depends on what I find in the Orc Mine's shops...)

Oh, last thing : I have fireball at a nearly good failure-rate (14% with my +5int ring on). Any idea how much more skills it will require to cast the Delayed one ?
Can I hope tobe able to cast FireStorm, in my chain mail, without needing 2 rings of wizardry and 27 skill-levels in armor, conju, and Fire magic ?

Hi all, I'm playing again after a long hiatus of about a year or two. Doing it on webtiles (finally figured out how to access the char dump)  Here is the chardump link http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Skyspire/Skyspire.txt

I'm a level 16 Gargoyle Fighter with Okawaru.  I got lucky with one of the best randart weapons I've seen and so I went with it, even though Gargoyle's are not crazy about polearms.

So far so good, but now I'm at a bit of a crossroads.  I am trying to decide whether to get my casting good enough to caste Haste (slow process) or go pure melee from this point on.. maybe putting points into ranged.. I do have a couple of bow of flames stashed.

The reason i'm thinking of going magic is because I have 2 rings of wizardry and a staff of energy. Also, I've been putting some points into INT.  But, I lost time because i had to bring my pole arms skill up and I have wasted points now in Maces.  I suppose I can shield up in tough spots because of the shield of resistance and use one of the acceptable mace type weapons if the situation calls for it.  But really the randart speed-branded glaive I have is pretty awesome:

+9,+6 glaive of Terror {speed, +Blink rF++ rC+ Int-1}

Okawaru has given some pitiful god-gifts .. no decent randart armor yet, no dragon armor yet, no crystal plate.

Thanks in advance.  Having a good time with this character.. Gargoyle is such a sweet class.

I'm tempted to go TSO and go for a multi-rune win, if Okawaru gets me some decent armor.  the best gear I've found has been on the floor.

Any suggestions ?  Develop melee-only?  or branch into magic enough to get haste?  I can cast blink and butterflies now, but that's about it.

UPDATE - a scroll of acquirement just gave me randart +10 crystal plate with N+ resistance and can be activated for Berserk.  It looks like I'll be ditching the idea of casting spells.. unless its possible to cast spells once my armor skill maxed.  I'm already at max N+ resistance, so TSO looks unnecessary too.
