Its about tension. The devs reckon forcing players to chose one rune to get earlier will make the game more fun - now we will have to do Swamp/Snake when we are barely ready rather than when we are definitely ready. They are probably right. I self imposed the runelock on my own trunk game just before, and it wasnt too bad  I- killed the Learnean H way before I would try normally, it was fun.

Once they sort out a few minor balance issues (they might have to make post lair content harder  :o ) it will be fine I guess, but I would prefer a softer more carrot less stick approach

I think it's a good idea.  It forces you to do at least one branch-end at a level where it's still challenging.

meh.
If you get shoals as the Water themed lair's sub, then you'll nearly need rPois to get a rune from the lair (as slime is much harder, if you can't get XP from deep dungeon) ...
So there is only the vault left ... :/

After my second dumb LOBe death I'm starting to feel the squeeze of no magic/scrolls.  What would people suggest for a more versatile combo?  I'm not really looking for pure casters but crusader style warriors with a selection of charms to support melee.

Berserker with Trog's Hand :P

Necromancers have pretty good starting spells for that sort of thing.
Ice Elementalists have fairly hybridy starting spells with Ozocubu's Armour, Condensation Shield and Freeze.
I guess skalds could work if you got them to live through lair.
Warrior of Kiku to get guaranteed books and pain weapon.

I'd probably just roll with a HONe, but I'm partial to orcs. High Elves have pretty much perfect apts for that sort of thing (weapons + charms). Humans play largely like elves that level up on time.

EDIT:
Some progress on the runelock game. Got the swamp rune. Had to clear the rune vault in three or four attacks due to mana shortages. Burned through a couple of tele scrolls to keep breathing too. My better judgement says to continue with D, but I'm going to give Spider a try. I'm scared of that place. I never seem to get a character to live through that place. No matter how late I go there, it's always something.

What does rPois have to do with Shoals?

HOFi or HOGl are both pretty good for that.  I like to take Oka because he will give you an executioner's axe sooner or later, and you can switch to TSO for a strong extended endgame.

What does rPois have to do with Shoals?

I think he's saying that Shoals is a very deadly place, so getting it instead of Swamp necessitates going after the poison branch first (though I'd say Spider is worse than Shoals, and lord I do not look forward to games where I get both.) I'm not sure how I feel about this myself, since I feel like people should be able to go wherever is easiest without being restricted by arbitrary boundaries. I don't see much difference between fighting through D and then coasting through a branch as opposed to fighting through a branch and then coasting through D. Not to mention, this makes early loot drops more important, since rPoison is extremely helpful in 3/4 Lair branches, and renewable flight helps a lot in Shoals.

I see why they're doing it, but as vogonpoet says I'd prefer an incentive based system to encourage early branch diving. Runelocked side vaults or branches with good treasure, or something.

I have to say though that in my experience Spider with Gargoyle (note: P immunity is awesome) was surprisingly easy.
Then again, I found a flaming brand on Spider:4 and headed back to lair, so I can't judge at deeper levels.

My thing about the lair's runes is special :
I only went as far as "going for the runes" with 2 types of characters, Gargoyle level 14 (so flying over water and rPois), and merfolk (so handling deep water as if I could cast swiftness).
I really had the feeling, both times, that these advantages are what made me go through "easily", and that, with a more normal character, I won't be able to get a rune before I get much more than with those ...

I can imagine snake/spider would be sortof bad, but I really don't think Shoals is an overly dangerous place other than the javalineers on the last floor.

Sif has gifted me enough books for a moderately sized library, but here's some more notable as of yet unlearned spells:

Apportation - I've never used it, but I understand it can be handy for some playstyles?
Passage of Golubria - I think someone asked it just a while ago, but what's the deal with this spell?
Flight - I probably want to have this before I hit abyss/pan.
Phase Shift - Extra EV sounds nice.
Deflect Missiles - Heavy spellslot cost and I've lived just fine without it so far.
Haste - I should probably get this up before Vaults5 and other late/extended content.
Controlled Blink - Useful spell or wasted XP and a poor tactician's get-out-of-jail-free card?
Control Teleport - Presumably useful.
Metabolic Englaciation - Fiendishly clever support spell or waste of slots?
Ice Storm (80% fail rate) - So far I've been killing everything just fine, so I can probably train up skills other than ice/conjurations.
Dispel Undead - aka. CryptCleaner3000.
Death's Door - Good reason to pump tons of necro?
Necromutation - Hungerless Sif channeling sounds mighty tempting with all the nutrition I've been burning lately.

Then there's melee. Do I pump staves up to ~14 and enchant/rebrand that Lajatang or should I just put ~10-15 points to evocations and use the staff of cold for everything? Or screw all that and get Ice Storm castable.

I'll clear elf, D and Crypt next, then probably slime after I purchase necessary resists. I assume after that it's more or less Zot1-4/V5->Abyss/Pan->Tomb/Hells->Zot5->Glorious victory.

It didn't feel too bad since I didn't have to do the branch ends before I had Throw Icicle and Freezing Cloud at decent power. Thanks to my ds mutations I had way more AC than an average caster would have. So with good (but not great) ds mutations and timely spell gifts from Sif I didn't feel like I had to do the branch ends unprepared. rPoison wasn't a problem as I found leather armour in lair and bought a ring from Orc. I know it's not guaranteed but half of D, all of Lair and all the shops in Orc have a pretty decent chance of providing rPoison.

Ice Storm-Get the fail rate down. It is one of the most powerful damage spells in the game against, even against resistant enemies. I would recommend doing this before you start trying to get haste/controlled blink/necromutation up. You may have ways of dealing with single target strong enemies, but Ice Storm lets you take out whole bunches of nasty enemies at once, usually in one or two casts.
Haste-Crazy useful. Take it.
Necromutation- Amazing with sif casters, but it requires a ton of points into necromancy. Makes torment a non-issue, making the hells (and all those mummies down in tomb/crypt) far easier. It also allows you to spam high level spells with no hunger, which is also super useful.
Controlled blink-Very nice, as long as you aren't in a -tele area makes escape super easy, and with sif channeling, you can regen the mana before they even get in sight again.
Control Teleport- Useful, but if you already have controlled blink far less so (since you already got your escape button).
Flight- You obviously need that if you are planning on going anywhere with water or lava.
Deflect missiles- Useful against heavy damage ranged attacks (eg. dragons, casters, yakutar). Its pretty strong when you do use it, but if you find yourself not casting it then you can dump it.

As for all of the other spells: I got no clue really.

And melee: I would recommend not putting your points into melee, for a while at least. You already got a lot of what you need for a castable Ice Storm, and Ice storm is way stronger then the damage output you can get off a staff. Once you got all the spells you want castable, then yeah, put some points into melee (preferably something that lets you use a buckler/sheild), but before then don't bother.

E: Misc: Get a buckler and train shields to 5. They block a fair amount of damage for a pretty tiny cost, especially if you find a good brand.

Apportation lets you take items without provoking monsters, and it costs basically nothing.  It's probably worth getting.

Controlled blink is hated mainly because it's too good.

Personally, I would get haste online before ice storm. Doing everything faster really is a pretty massive benefit, and the XP cost of Charms to 12ish (wizardry depending) is pretty minimal compared to Ice and Conjurations to IDK, 20-24???

I went long blades, cos I found the demon blade of flaming pretty early, and felt that it complemented my ice attacks nicely. Not regretting the decision yet (Jory went down to Haste + tab no worries), but probably should spend more time wielding my staff of cold. Looks like my next step is back to Vaults to take down Mara or Boris... Hmmm, I am almost tempted to learn Silence and train up my melee skills some more  - the demon blade is already pretty effective.

It's been a long time i didn't played purely a magic user in Crawl and running a Deep Elf Conjurer i then discovered that Battlesphere spell some have been talking about.
And wow, that's a really great spell, i had a few some ridiculously lethal situation (involving Orc Priests and Orc Warriors blocking me for retreating, situation that in previous versions in which that spell didn't existed would have meant YASD) that have been transformed into victory just thanks to that spell.

The problem of this spell though is that it makes me a bit more daring than usual , no good as i need to keep in mind Deep Elves are very squishy and easy to 2 shot kill even with a battlesphere assisting the spell barrages, i hope i'll manage to keep a cautious attitude.

I was lucky to find a sustenance ring early, and the much more relaxed pace regarding the nutrition loss thanks to it has made that current run a lot more enjoyable than my usual past Crawl games, as it has cut the damn annoying food minigame a very lot.

edit : And a shop selling a ring of poison resistance just before Lair, with the rune lock preventing further dungeon exploration in the hope to find one in case of snake/spider branches , that's great, though it makes me question what is Crawl trying to do then, making my character life too good usually means that Crawl will pull some unescapable deadly situation soon just to laugh at me.
