Staves also have the benefit of passive casting enhancers and other neat perks, so it's likely to be the thing you're holding anyway, and several staves have extra damage effects that depend on your Evocations skill. And to elaborate on "kill mooks, save MP," not only do you get the savings of not casting that fireball, you can gain Mana from Vehumet from the kills; he doesn't care how they die, the MP comes anyway. There's also the noise factor to consider, as the louder spells can bring hordes of enemies down on you. Or maybe he was just playing a strange build for shits and giggles, idk, but melee to save mana is a very viable strategy.

As far as the conjurer, my first advice for branching would be "whatever spells you have access to." If you have access to a lot (Sif Muna, book shop, whatever) then I'll note that Air has some really nice buff spells, and it's worth training the things you already have. Venom Bolt is okay, but Poison Arrow is better, and Ignite Poison combines well with Poisonous Cloud to continue with the Fire/Poison you mentioned.

@Man of Paper it's a pretty good combo, the sustenance will more than offset the hunger of the regeneration. It's not good enough to keep doing once you get better rings, but until you do life should be good.

Hah, a classic "screw you" from crawl. Went down to L5, noticed that all three up staircases were next to each other. So was Rupert. Luckily he was asleep so I got back up in once piece. I guess it's back to D for me.

But staves suck in damage (don't think that wizard will use lajatng).
When confronted easy enemies it is not that worse to throw no-hunger bolt with 4-5 mana cost and don't bother with staves (esp. when you get half of the spent mana being returned). In tough situation you won't swing wildly and will rely on your best firepower.
And since you can trade 10 in staves to 1-3 in conjurations, I'd prefer maximizing my damage output. Or even train dodge instead for more survivability.

Staff with skill 10 is still better than a battle axe with skill 10. As for MP management, it depends. A Deep elf of Vehumet will of course have much more mp at any given time in the game than, let's say a demonspawn of Sif Muna.
Throwing 4-5mp worth of spells per enemy might work for a DE/Vehumet, but a Ds/Sif will run out of juice pretty fast if he doesn't prioritize.

And bumping into blink frogs when you've run out of juice is very bad.

Fire and Ice enhancer staffs do quite a lot of damage that ignores AC if you have high fire/ice magic skills and evo.

Staff of Earth, Air and Death also do considerable damage if you have evocations plus the relevant magic skill. Not sure about staff of poison, it can poison monsters on a hit but I don't know if it adds melee damage as well.

The deck you found is unlikely to be a deck of wonders.  Legendary decks are also pretty dangerous to just draw from randomly without Nemelex powers to mitigate the randomness.  There is a risk of shuffle.

Vaults 1-4 shouldn't be any tougher than what you've fought past D20. You're golden if you can handle yaktaurs and somewhat hard hitting melee types. Vaults5 is scary as hell for a 3-rune.

Clearing snake would be a good choice. I've always felt it's the easiest rune branch. Just a couple of things to watch out for:
1)Naga can spit poison and it can chew through your rPois
2)Snakes there move fast and some can hit hard (with poison to boot)

Learn blink if you can, or carry some ?teleport and ?blink. You shouldn't let anything get close enough to constrict you, but those help you escape if you do.

And I'd ditch that cloak, -6 acc affects your spells too I think.

What does your spell list look like? Elf and Vaults are both easier with Repel or Deflect Missiles, and if you have Ignite Poison you should be able to straight up clear Snake. If blinking/teleporting is your first choice for escape, you probably want to stow the Stasis amulet (and you definitely want Conservation for Vaults and the lower levels of the dungeon; magma crabs will ruin your day without it.) I don't know your playstyle, but usually I'd be wearing a robe instead of armor (especially since you already have rPoison from the staff,) since I'd be looking for the lower evasion penalty to maximize my spell success rate, since Vehumet should be gifting an awesome endgame spell soon (if he hasn't already.)

The big thing I'd recommend you watch out for in Vaults is vault convokers. Those guys are huuuuuuge jerks who can summon every monster on the level down on you. They can really fill a room with dudes if you let them. Also, they can summon uniques if they're on the level. Just a thing to note.

A melee dude can keep bashing his way until he reaches the convoker to clobber him too. I have yet to get a mage down that deep though, but the thought of fighting a bunch of dudes like what I experienced with my MiBe, but with only spells and limited mana doesn't sound too thrilling.

Lava Orcs are awesome.  The only weakness I can see right now is that the scroll thing can fuck you over big time.  If you're careful about that, they're great.  I've got one now, a Berserker of Trog, who's about at the point where as long as I don't do anything fucking stupid he should probably win.  I'm considering switching to TSO and going for extended :o  How bad is Trog's wrath?

Learn blink if you can
What does your spell list look like?

Oh, I forgot to pst my spell list and skills!
Code: [Select]
Magic Dart 1%
Searing Ray 1%
Iskenderun's Mystic Blast 1%
Iskenderun's Battlesphere 1%
Blink 2%
Mephitic Cloud 1%
Fulminant Prism 1%
Venom Bolt 1%
Bolt of Fire 1%
Delayed Fireball 1%
Swiftness 1%
Repel Missiles 1%
I have Book of Annihilations and going to learn IOOD before venturing into snake pit. Does this spell generally worth learning it?
It also contains Fire storm - my goal. Now it is at 50% success, should raise my skills to cast it reliably.
Does Ring of flame helps a lot? I have access to it through Book of Fire and charms are pretty easy for DE.
The problem is that I lack access to any form of abjuration.
What other cool spells should I have for late game? Is Summon butterflies a useful spell?
Hexes doesn't work in late because of high MR, right? And Regeneration is lame?
Does haste increase spellcasting speed?
Should I learn Flight?
Does Ignite Poison work well on poison monsters marching through mephitic cloud?
Does Passage of golubria generally worth it?

Code: [Select]
Fighting 5.1
Armour 5.1
Dodging 8.0
Shields 4.2

Spellcasting 22.0
Conjurations 15.0
Hexes 6.0
Charms 11.0
Fire Magic 16.8
Earth Magic 7.4
Poison Magic 7.2

I think about raising my Fighting a bit (to 10 maybe), dodge to 10-12, then Fire and Conj.
What is better for DECj of Vehumet - Dodge, Armor or Shields? My noobish opinion is the following:
Now I wear swamp dragon armor, and I am thinking about wearing ring mail if I found some. But I should have my Armor skill at 27 to negate spellcasting penalty. And I could possibly find some good artifact leather - this will negate the need of Armor skill and render it much less efficient than Dodge.
What about shields - I will wear only buckler and I don't think high skill will help me a lot.
So Dodge should be generally better option.
Am I right or I missed something?

Also I'm in rage because I haven't found any acquirement scrolls yet.
And the most annoying thing is that there is no rings of see invisible! Neither in shops nor on the ground!

And where the hell can I get Boots of running?

especially since you already have rPoison from the staff
OMG I don't believe how stupid I can be! I changed my +2 leather armour to swamp dragon one because of poison resistance.
But any way I may want to weild another staff later on, so I should put it in my stash for possible later use.

I generally feel ready to clear Swamp 5 and Snake 1-5 as far as I can keep threats at distance.
Nagas (or Greater nagas) should not be the problem after I met (and successfully disposed) a pack of 7 hell knights, Margery and a Necromancer on D22.

I fell nervous about Fiery and Icy swamp endings - I generally need ring of flames for it. Icy will be easier since my fire attacks will deal additional damage.

Watch out for constriction!  There is a shoulder-high pile of dead bodies on the Snake:5 upstair.

Hah, I didn't thought that it can prevent going upstairs!
Does ring of flames stay on while going downstairs? It seems that I gonna dispose welcoming snakes on Snake5 as fast as possible!

UPD: I feel stupid for ignoring Labirynth. I did it because I had only one apple with me, just returned from my stash.
Later I realized that I have 4-5 gluggy potions of both colors and ring of sustenance on.

Trog Retribution -> Bring Torture to I

It's really bad and lasts for ages.  I wouldn't do it unless you're planning to cheese it in the temple with rings of sustenance or something.
