Words cannot describe the kinds of insane battles I've fought as a melee character due to vault convokers. Vault guards, vault guards everywhere.

true that, the fear effect of meeting a convoker is usually higher for me than meeting an ancient lich.

i'm not really good enough at crawl (i've never made it into Zot) to see many ancient liches but the prospect of them summoning torment-using demons makes liches a bit scarier than convokers for me

The thing to remember is that only 2 of the 4 possible ancient liches' spellsets have Summon Greater Demon, whereas every single god damn Convoker is going to Recall.

Of course liches have a lot of other ways to make your life miserable.

Also buffs to Zin in trunk? Wasn't he always considered quite powerful, just... unpopular? Mutation immunity, not to mention Imprison and Sanctuary and stuff.

He has some nice panic buttons, but does lock out a lot of spells (transmutations and necromancy) and used to lack offensive tools.  The change to recite is probably to help make it a less dangerous thing to use.

Yeah, Zin is a bit of a risky choice, especially for casters. If you decide to go Zin you can't learn the lich transmutation or half the 'create meatshield' spells that are most nonspecialised caster's bread and butter.

Necromutation isn't as crucial as people make it out to be, and it in fact blocks the three really good necromancy spells (regen, borgnjor's, death's door).

It did combo nicely with old summoning and Sif Muna, but that's been nerfed.

....you know, it seems every time I grab early plate armor/other very useful and powerful item early, it means the game is about to go ahead and utterly butt-fuck me, to the point I'm actually thinking about suiciding every time it happens.... >:(

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

doublepost. Well, this was my best run yet, Minotaur Berserker named Lilak. I managed to pick up a shield early, then knocked off some plate mail from an orc (he didn't need it anymore >:D ), and from there on my response to groups of enemies and/or strong enemies was simple:hit berserk and go to town. Worked well enough to get me to Shoals 2(I had bypassed spider's nest due to lack of poison resist)...wherin I opened a door and found a small group of merfolk Javeliners. I did my bog-standard response and berserked...only for it to run at at a VERY bad moment with me only having killed 1, and his buddies surrounding me. Died before I could think to throw on my ring of teleport/read a scroll of teleport. Oh well, I had a blast with him(and am now dreading returning to shoals due to his ghost haunting the place from now on!)

Yeah, going berserk can be real risky later on. When I got to Shoals as MiBe I used Brothers in Arms if I needed divine assistance. One or two berserk deep trolls can really clear a room.

Otherwise I was usually strong enough to just clobber things in normal not-berserk combat.

I'm really warming up to Djinni Fighters or the like. They can pump int for when they pick up spells and get a ton of hp out of it. Plus, I love Nemlex so having sacrifices for wonder rocks.
