Why in God's name would you train spellcasting that high (or at all) despite not knowing any spells?

Maybe he read all his amnesia scrolls just to confuse us?

I assumed he was just dumping experience after having maxed out all other useful skills.

Somewhere halfway through the Ziggurat, I had all my relevant skills maxed out, so I started training whatever. Like stealth to max, because I found two manuals and I wondered how stealthy I could become wearing all that armour("very unstealthy"). I trained bows because I had a nice bow that I'd never used or intended to use. Polearms trained themselves somehow - I think due to the combination of a manual and experience potions guzzling?
With spellcasting I thought that if I managed to get it to 27, I'd see if I could cast any spells despite crystal plate and a large shield, but then I just said fuck it and ascended.

If you want to start learning spells as a melee dude you should probably focus on a specific school (ie Charms for Haste, although I don't know if you could reasonably cast it in CPM and with low int).

After a long time of lurking in this thread, I have decided to start playing. Just one question.... is there any easy avoid for orc priests smite that i'm missing? Or is it just run/kill as fast as you can?

Corners and doors. A very good skill in this game, right beside knowing when to run away or skip something, is knowing how to restrict Line-of-Sight for as long as possible. If something is shooting at you better than you can shoot/hit it and you have a nearby corner, use it; a right-angle hallway guarantees you are only one space away before it can start shooting you.

(Edit: If you don't know how this would work, maybe you should spectate a few early games by good players?)

Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

I get what you mean. Got down to lair with a DsFi, but was unaware of the existence of Hydras, and thus ill prepared. Trying not to look stuff up is !!FUN!!.

Little questions :

I am currently playing a lvl12 Gargoyle Gladiator of Ashenzari (using Maces & Flails), with 7 in spellcasting.
I have a unknown spellbook, with the "high level" tag. I guess I may have Necronomicon, the book of annihilation, or another thing like that ... Do'nt want to waste a ID scroll, as I stash it for the moment ... Any idea when it won't be un-ID-able ?

Another thing, the wiki says that Animate Skeleton isn't useful for blunt cursed weapons anymore (in trunk). Being a follower of ashenzari, I need another mean to eat meat from corpses when I'll curse a eveningstar ... Any idea ?

6 spellcasting and 10 (whatever school of magic it is).
So you either need 10 necromancy, 10 summoning, or 10 conjuration.

(Predit: I'm slow, but below is what I wrote before lemon10 posted.)

Which spell from one of the three {highlevel} books had a spell you were looking for? You almost always get the requirements to read the book in the process of building up to cast something in it. (Hint: the bots have plenty of accurate, succinct information for answering little questions; ask them "highlevel book", then you can ask about each book, then each spell.)

Another thing, the wiki says that Animate Skeleton isn't useful for blunt cursed weapons anymore (in trunk). Being a follower of ashenzari, I need another mean to eat meat from corpses when I'll curse a eveningstar ... Any idea ?
It's sad that you're using the badwiki instead the bots or IRC channel, but yes, the can't-butcher annoyance was almost entirely removed (right along with sickness from chunks); the game now assumes that you have a little knife in your boot or whatever. I don't recall, but I think it can still be stopped by extreme things like batform I can just ask the bots.
