The Double Sword is good for long blade and shield users, yeah (although you might want to go Great or Triple instead).

Chei is actually pretty damn good for some builds, namely heavy armour wearing mages.
I disagree - I can't think of a single character who would be better served by worshipping Chei than not worshipping anyone.  This is for the simple reason that he stops you from using haste.  Haste is fantastic - it basically just makes your character 50% better at everything.  Cheibriados' abilities don't even come close to making up for losing that, and the fact that he cripples your movement speed is insult to injury.

I recall reading that daggers of speed were best for stabbing because it let you get multiple stabs where normal speed would only give one.

Apparently I've been playing on 0.11 and I never realized there were more recent versions. Neat.

Ogre Hunter. Cheibrados' stat boosts let you carry enough large rocks to get you through any encounter and cast portal projectile reliably.
High-hp fighters with a vampiric axe work extremaly well with Chei as well.

Against multiple enemies yeah, I suppose.  It'd do less damage to each one though.

That sounds absolutely agonizing.  It's one thing to be a glass cannon, but to be a glass cannon with no means of escape?  It'd be far better to just get haste and a god that doesn't destroy your movement speed.

High-HP fighters work extremely well with anyone.  An atheistic one with knowledge of Haste would be better than one worshipping Chei, too.

I thought blade hands with Chei bonuses is better than blade hands with haste. Though there's still that lack of escape options.

Hm. I found a +2 Crystal Plate Armor on my Hill Orc Priest. Is it worth-while to use? So far, it seems to have helped keep me alive quite nicely. I also have a ring that resists Electricity and Fire, plus a ring of cold protection, plus a cloak and a wizard's hat of magic resistance. Boy, though, it's been tough, some of the fights. Cleared out the orc lair, but jeez was the last part hard. Lost tons of my orcs.

Also: Found a Lantern of Shadows and a Lamp of Fire. Are they worth-while to use, and what does the Shadows one do? Thanks!

Fuuuuck. Dead again, some giant named snake. Argh. Accidentally used the wrong wand, and cast a fireball right by my orc followers, too. Dammit. Poor guys.

Why do you say that? It's as if haste was the only escape option available in the game.
But whatever floats your boat. I'm not trying to make you play this way, just pointing out that it does work quite well.

Playing a vampire assassin in version 0.12.2. The stealth boost from starving oneself--"bloodless"-- is really useful. I also lucked out and took a vampiric dagger off some sleeping kobold in DL:1. This is great since it gives me a passive method of regaining health to counter "bloodless" state's lack of health regen, and successful stabs net me even more health.

My one major weakness so far is a lack of ranged power. I can't tank everything that fights me in close combat. I have a bunch of daggers for chucking at lone wandering enemies, and the blowgun is useful, but enemies that are wandering the dungeon and immune to poison prove a problem. I nearly died to a wandering ice beast in DL:6 if I hadn't lucked out and read an unidentified teleport scroll. In retrospect I probably could've used bat form to escape, but whatever.

The question now is bows or slings? I've got a bow and 14 arrows, and a sling with a bunch of rocks and sling bullets. If bows are better for late game I assume I should start using it now.

I didn't really mean haste so much as "walking away from things".

The base damage is 12 + (STR + DEX) / 4. Supposing that your unboosted stats are 15, 15, (ignoring INT), then at max piety, BH base damage rises from the unboosted 19.5 to the boosted 27.0, an improvement of 41%.

Haste OTOH multiplies the duration of actions by 2/3 (in 0.13 / trunk), meaning that in the same amount of time a hasted, unboosted character has an effective base damage of 19.5 * (4/3) == 26.0. So Haste (or Finesse) outputs about 4% less damage than Chei-boosted BH. For older versions Haste increases speed more (multiplies by 1/2 instead), so it would be a clearly superior option there.

Now I'll have to start a Chei character and try it out.

Playing as a draconian conjurer. Upon wielding a spear of dragon slaying it states "You feel a strong urge to commit suicide." The dev team thinks of everything.

Bumping the thread, looking for advice.

Playing a minotaur Berserker, I've gotten crazy potential for an extended run, or at least something more than just 3 runes. Still running with Trog at the moment, but I've got some magical staves and books for if I switch to TSO. Good potential gear for spells, including a robe of the archmagi I could use and a staff of wizardry for helping me cast in heavy armor. If/when I switch to TSO I've got a great mace I'm hoping to buff for an end game weapon I could bless for using in hell/pan for overkilling demons. Either that or a demon whip, I guess.

I encountered a labyrinth for the first time, it was fun. I actually had to maneuver it twice after accidentally zapping myself with a wand of teleport. Got a archmagi robe and a +2 eveningstar(!) of protection out of it. Also have an amulet of rage from D:1. Good for when I might need to hit the big red button after converting to TSO. There's also a treasure trove needing a +3 fire dragon armor I could loot later if I get the dragon armor.

No runes yet, since I need a source of See Invisible. I almost died to what I assume was an unseen horror flapping around and kiting me. I barely survived that by running into a dead end and swinging blindly. I don't want to go deeper and risk my life against more invisible dudes.

Question is, should I try and go for extended game? I haven't even cleared a normal 3 rune game, but I just have so much potential for awesome.

Can you enchant your hands/claws with scrolls?

Nope but when you train your UC it multiplies the base damage of your fists as well as decreasing the delay of your attacks, which means UC scales all the way to 27 rather than most weapon skills which you train until min delay then leave them for ages if not for good. Also blade hands makes you deal tons of damage by more than tripling the base damage of UC so its well worth a look at for any UC fighter
