They should add a trueart GGCSSC: a giant giant-cave-spider spiked club. Probably something like -8 +8 and chance to fear when you swing.

I found Trog to be better than Oki for ogres as far as god gifts go. You don't get so many useless gifts (some darts if you get Throwing to 8 or higher) and you're swimming in randart giant (spiked) clubs, some of which are actually useful.

Well, just tried crawl again for the first time in around 6 months, and goddamn it. Rolled a Draconian Hunter by random (which was good, something I was used to), didn't die early on, got green (even better!), then on Lair 5 (or 6), Rupert.

Screw Rupert. In the time I'd stopped he'd been given the ability to confuse you by bloody shouting, if a berserking (the AI berserk which has no negative side-effects btw) dude with a great sword wasn't bad enough. Since I hadn't yet found a teleport scroll I had absolutely no chance at all.

I guess I now remember why I hadn't played crawl in 6 months.

Yeah Trog is better than Okawaru, but I keep rolling with the idea of doing extended. And abandoning Trog on an Ogre, without the chance to train spellcasting beforehand, does not sound like a good time to me. Trog is a seriously mad dude.

And Demon, I'm pretty sure Rupert always had the ability to confuse, it's just the shouting that's new. Or I might be completely wrong, of course, but I'm pretty sure I never felt confident fighting Rupert without MR.

Partly because I was incredibly tired from all the Pan, partly because Torment can go fuck itself. Really bummed out, I could've escaped twenty times over, but I had been in similar situations quite often and never had a problem, so I stood and fought when I really should've bailed out. It was a fight against a fiend and a Hell sentinel, I got tormented several times in a row. Had 1 hp left at a point, no wand of healing, no potion of heal wounds, drunk a normal heal potion and then the Hell sentinel hellfired me.

Also I'm never, ever doing melee extended with anything other than a holy Exec axe, good god.

or a blessed +9,+9 triple sword?

So, uh, first time playing Arcane Marksman (XL:9 DS with only two mutations so far: elongated toenails and protection from fire, but I got a +2 Cloak of Preservation off of Yiuf anyway).  Never realized how much power and mob control you have. A couple inner flames, one or two well placed shots, and bam. Hallway's blocked off, gibs everywhere, and I'm free to take pot shots through the fire (and flames). I'm enjoying this run so far. Finishing up D:8, going to go a few more floors and see if I can't get a crossbow from Oka before I try my hand at Orc.

Only problem is that the tiles version of 12.2 is unbearable to play for me. The sprite for my character shows as a blank white mess, and turn by turn the game performance is terrible. Pushing 'o' for autoexplore can take a full minute when not seeing items or enemies.

I'm no stranger to playing roguelikes in ASCII, but the tiles version is too lovely not to use. Any ideas how to fix this? My KoAs would appreciate it.

I...have had none of those problems. Re-download? Maybe something got corrupted somewhere?

rant incoming: I realized I bitterly hate an aspect of Crawl, which surprised me because I am a mild sort.

I hate food.

Why is it there?

In nethack, food was an interesting minigame, it was scarse, you could starve (I did at least three times in my memory), and better yet, when you ate enemies, occasionally you would get an intrinsic. As you got better, you zero'd in on monsters that were good eating (floating eyes for telepathy, giants for strength, dragons for surviving dragons). You even had interesting situations when you would desperately try to eat (or better yet, can) one fresh corpse before it rotted while getting swarmed.

It also limited spellcasting which was otherwise completely overpowered and easy.  It also prevented camping a layer indefinitely for spawns.

Now, DCSS.  Food does nothing and adds no intrinsics.

 It is so plentiful that I end up dumping piles of fruit and rations into my stash.  Edible monsters are everywhere. Starving only happens when harpies attack before you are ready. Of course, then you inevitably starve because apparently a hardened adventurer needs to eat a full steak every 20 minutes.

Food does little to prevent camping, because, as i mentioned, it is plentiful. On the other hand, there are functions in place to prevent camping, since layers will spawn out-of-depth monsters when you hang out too long.

Food apparently manages and restricts spellcasting. Spellcasting is thus managed and restricted by A. mana, B. Food C. Intelligence and D. Spellcast failure rate. It is so nerfed compared to Nethack, most people seem to use 2-3 spells: namely Haste, mephitic cloud, (fire/poison/frost) cloud. Every other interesting spell is not viable because A. you won't ever succeed in casting it. B. if you do, you will be out of mana C. you'll be starving. again.

Conversely, melee is "managed and restricted" by hitting tab a lot. and sometimes drinking a potion.

Why does spellcasting need the added restriction of hunger when it is already nerfed by mana and other factors that make it hard for newer players?

Why does it need food, the least nerfy or nerfs, which basically means that casting interesting spells is not just mana draining and difficult but also makes you hungry. Which means you have to eat something. Which is all it means.

Why the hell does crawl need a repeptitive "minigame" consisting of periodically consuming an item in your inventory to delay the next time you need to consume an item in your inventory?

Does anyone enjoy any aspect of food, or find it enriches their game?

That's a really pointlessly simplified version of both spellcasting and meleeing. If you're going to make stupid strawmen, then you aren't going to get any proper explanations about food.
