Started a MuWz. First floor, find a +1 dwarven Buckler and a ring of cold. I am preparing for Sigmund/grinder/Nessos on the fourth floor.

So I actually got a TeAE with both Tornado and Chain Lightning castable post-Lair... eeeeeehhhhh. I died a few dungeon levels after that, since Tornado just can't get enough of putting the biggest possible melee threats right next to me, and Tengu aren't exactly built for meleeing titanic slime creatures [while Kirke turns you into a pig].

I'm not actually impressed, though. The Air school has excellent support skills, but as a main damage dealing source... I'm not sure. I dislike Tornado, at least for 3-rune runs, since most of my tengus don't even lift, and chain lightning is bizarre. It can instagib single threats, or do a bit of damage to groups. Or instagib groups. It's kind of unreliable, is what I'm saying. I might try another run, or I might switch to EEs. I actually got a job, so I won't be able to play remotely as much as I want to, though :|

I find the main disadvantage about air is the bloody noise all those lightening spells make, if you cast a single spell half the floor will be swarming towards you.

Oh noise is definitely a disadvantage, but when you invariably miss 5 lightning bolts in a row you can slap your thirty buffs and Road-Runner yourself out of there.

When I invariably miss 11 Iron Shots in a row I can't do anything because I'm starving and even if I weren't all I could hope to do was wallhack myself away if whatever was there didn't casually tear out my guts in the fifty turns I bash my head against the rock to make a passage.

Seriously EE have such a gnarly start, damn. I'm starting to understand why people prefer Ice and Fire for their straight-out blastycasters.

Tornado is extremely good. For 9 MP, you get to kill a hell of a lot of monsters, and for a level 9 spell it's not particularly hard to cast.

One piece of advice: Don't be wary of using stones for Sandblast. They really, really help.

For the particular build I'm trying - low defense great firepower - Tornado is a horrible spell. It takes several [six, if I'm not mistaken?] turns to get to maximum AoE, it deals damage over time, and it pulls enemies towards me. I'm not discussing the merits of Air magic as a school, I'm considering Air magic in the context of a glass cannon. Fire/Ice storm would be slightly harder to cast [not that harder, though, since I don't think Vehumet boosts Tornado] and a lot more versatile, especially fire storm.

Shatter is actually similar to Tornado in some regards - it's conditional damage [non-amorphous, non-insubstantial targets only, 1/3rd damage to flying, etc etc], makes a ton of noise - but Earth generally has great single-target damage, even if LCS is pretty unreasonable as a spell.

I understand there are a lot more optimal ways to play air and earth elementalists, I'm just trying something out for fun.

As long as you are enjoying yourself, go for it, but I am pretty sure none of the level 9 nukes are worth getting online until after you have at least some XP invested in fighting and dodging.
Also, from the bots:

Oh, that's nice! I guess maybe at some point before he didn't use to boost it and I just remembered wrong?

Also I just lost a great GrEE to the god damn Lernaean Hydra. I was on Swamp:5, getting chased by a normal hydra and a few mosquitoes, and I figured I probably wouldn't be able to deal with them at once, so I zap a teleport wand.

Ended up right next to the god damn LH.

So this is my most successful character so far, and I really think I can go for my first win of any kind, just looking for 3 runes and I have a couple of questions:

A minotaur monk? interesting choice. The mottled dragon armour has an EV of only -1 so you can definitely wear it, even without much armour skill. The classic 3 rune order is probably: lair,orc,vault 1-4,swamp/spider,shoals/snake,elf?(always a bit of an oddball concerning difficulty),vault 5,zot. You will need resistances preferably all, because zot has some nasty elemental damage dealers. elec+ and at least fire++ are needed.
Also since you are a monk, see if you can get blade hands catable, just put exp into transmutation, and a bit into spellcasting until it is at 95% or so. Minotaurs suck at magic but transmutation is only a -2 skill and blade hands really maul everything. (of course completely optional)

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

Some pretty awesome luck with equipment has left me omniresistant, with both my rings free for randart jewellery. I plan on raiding Elf soon since I don't like Deep Elves particularly much, I have a Robe of magic resistances in my stash so I should be safe. I'll probably get Charms to Haste levels, maybe eventually rush into Statueform shenanigans if I feel like extended.

After splattering a  ton of TeAes in the D:20/Lair branches area, Gargoyles are a welcome respite, in that they're naturally tankier and I don't need to worry about Titans instagibbing me with Airstrike. Earth magic is also a lot better for a glasscannon build, since there are no earth-resistant enemies and sandblast with rocks is obnoxiously powerful against unarmoured enemies. Also it's just be personal preference, but Earth/Conjuration spells have a lot more punch than Air/Conj ones. I don't even have Lehudib's yet, but I guess with Shatter I don't even need it. Still, though - I wanna instagib Ancient liches, the pussies.

Gargoyle is definitely among the easier races - they have some resistances, can't be petrified and level up quickly. They're also reasonably tanky [+1 HP apt].

I'll still probably die in an hour's time, but it's going a lot better than AEs. I haven't even needed the resistances yet!

edit : Did Elf. There were a ton of blademasters, god damn. I now have the staff of Wucad Mu, and a staff of energy. Apparently the staff of energy was changed again in trunk, and now it not only completely removes spell hunger, but it can also be channelled for mana, making it the best thing ever. So I guess I'm going to need some Evo soon.

edit : Hoooly damn, I nearly died the most ridiculous death ever. I went down a flight of stairs, started my usual Shatter routine, when a god damn Orb of eyes paralysed me while a hundred thousand slime creatures and hydrae started munching my delicious stony hide. Paralysis wore off at 5 hp, and I had to use 2 scrolls of blinking and a ton of potions to survive.

Granted I only played SLASH'EM on the iPhone before, so I never knew how addictive COMPUTER roguelikes could be. I think I have found my game o' the year if Heart Of Iron III doesn't win later this year.

Well Roguelikes are games that generally thrive on complexity, and if it's one thing pc does well it's complexity all of them, but complexity the most.

That slowness 1 mutation screwed me more than I suspected. Missed a ton of crystal spears on a Guardian, an Orb of Fire came, I was OOM, first attempt to evoke the staff of Wucad Mu confused me, and it all went downhill from there. I blinked a bit, read a scroll of fog, had no potions of heal wounds or wands of healing, since two acquirements on wands gave me Teleportation.

This was the easiest Zot clear up to the point I died. I even killed Tiamat in a 1v1 brawl after shattering her retinue. I still prefer statue form melee for Earth Elementalists with a lot less Conjurations, or if conjurations then at least getting a storm spell in addition to Shatter, though. My DDEE I won during the tourney felt a ton safer and he had horrible equipment. Alternatively I could've gotten Controlled Blink a lot earlier, since it acts as semi-controlled blink on -Ctele levels. Or a wand of heal wounds, of course, but sometimes the RNG hates you.

I'll probably do a haste-bows elf at some point, but I'm somewhat burned out.

Well, I can see at least one way I could have avoided that death, but once again I think to myself that this game should be called Dungeon Crawl: Battle against Hubris   :(

MiMo was fun, UC is weakest Early game in my experience, and that headbutt saved my ass many times in the beginning, add to that great combat apts and it makes a pretty decent monk, at least in my experience.

Pretty well, except for the melding shield, which made me more glass cannon than I liked, and made my xp investment in shields useless, but overall nice in the few situations I used it (mainly whenever I 1v1'd anything hard)
