I should probably get chain lightning at least 5-10 levels of fighting before Tornado somehow.

Possibly FTFY? I have done Orc with Tornado in the past, and yeah, its fun (hah ha, actually it was hilarious, everything in the sorcerer/warlord/priests-aplenty end vault died to one tornado, apart from two normal orcs that must have been hiding in corners), but with a Tengu, were you seriously not tempted to get some fighting at all? I mean, sure, you don't get much extra HP, but every damn point helps with those squishy little geeks (I am a fine one to talk - my TeFE during the tourney got the Meteorologist title before raising fighting beyond 10, and had Tornado castable at about 24 Air or something, so all that XP was basically spent to sound cool, but at least I did have those 10 levels of fighting).

Yeah that would be the reasonable choice, but I'm not really going for reasonable there :D I suspect a few levels of stealth would be even better, I love stealth as a defense for casters, at least 3-5 rune ones. It's really helpful in Zot, too.

But still, I'll try to get a good single-target offense spell next time, because while Sticky flame and Freezing cloud turned out to be excellent crutches, Lightning Bolt is somewhat unreliable as a single-target spell. God is it inaccurate. I should possibly also focus on enchantments and get Haste going.

Anyway, I'll give the rush-air-magic TeAE a few more goes, then I'll give a blasty [DE?]EE a few goes and I'm going on a Crawl vacation. The new species seem interesting, especially Djinni, but I don't feel like dealing with gimmicks, and Grotesk [Gargoyle?] is the only semi-reasonable one in this regard.

Okay, so correct me if I've got my math wrong. Just trying to understand the system.

"To achieve min delay, you need your weapon skill to be at least max(base delay, 2*base delay - 14), plus 1 if odd, or 14 skill for a sabre."

So you'd need 14 skill for a falchion.  That puts you down to 6.5 delay, I'm not sure if it rounds up, rounds down or randomly splits between the two.

Where would I be able to find all these equations so I could use them on the fly? And is delay like initiative in Pen and Paper RPGs? These past couple days have seen a good boost in my ability, so I figure now's the time to dive into the technical stuff a little. I also now have a DsHu (that's Demonspawn Hunter, right?) among my top five, which I don't think is bad for my first stealth character.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Note the lack of unidentified wands, save the poly. I picked it up when the hydra got close and used it in the hopes it'd do anything helpful, but it failed. If that wand wasn't so tempting I'd have teleported away and survived a bit longer. The gifted crossbow could have been a little better, but that's why I kept the other one around to complement it. And am I good on my method of skill training? My plan that I haven't been able to execute due to lack of remembering or not getting to that point is switching to focusing on Traps once my main weapon skill hits 10 or 15. At least until Traps hits 10. My worry is my skill training may be too focused, and I'll wind up getting borked due to lack of a proper skill.

Most of them are on the knowledge bot on the main dungeon crawl website, and the learndb has all the information on one page so it's easier to search.

Delay isn't like initiative.  Basically, there are "time units" in the game.  A normal race with no speed modifiers takes 10 time units to move, to give you an idea of how long these are (note: diagonal moves take the same amount of time to make as orthogonal moves, which leads to some LOS and targeting oddities).  The delay is how many time units it takes until you can make another move after attacking with that weapon, basically.

That's why it's really important - with low delay you have greatly improved damage output due to being able to make more attacks, and you also get a sortof defensive boost since you're being hit fewer times between swings.

MP  10/10        EV 25     Int 13      God: Okawaru [*****.]

@: about to teleport, mighty, agile, somewhat resistant to hostile enchantments,
extremely stealthy

a: Heroism, Finesse, Renounce Religion //seriously, these first two options are awesome

E - the -3,-1 crossbow "Iriepn" {venom, +Inv SInv}
(Okawaru gifted it to you on level 10 of the Dungeon)

It poisons the ammo it fires.

   It enhances your eyesight.
   It lets you turn invisible.

 o - 3 potions of speed

   Skills:
 + Level 8.3 Fighting
 * Level 9.0 Short Blades
 - Level 6.8 Crossbows
 + Level 7.8 Dodging
 + Level 8.4 Stealth

Whar Invocations skill whar?
Hero and Finesse are why you go Okie. Hero up before every so so fight. Also, what do you think your dead corpse can do with those potions of speed? Your crossbow also has evokable Inv, which with a bit of Evo skill would trivialise Hydrae, and indeed lots of other stuff, completely.

Just found the Singing Sword on my MuWz. I know it's not all that hot but I think I'm going to use it and just scum the character if I die. Have some fun with it.

This is nearly the most advanced character I got (had some level 13-18 before, but haven't played for a year, and they were mostly DemonSpawn Makhleb warriors), so I don't really know what to expect.

I need some advice :

I've got my DDFi, level 12, and I don't know what I "should" do :
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The planned thing is to rely on armor and (not for now) shields to survive, Maces as a main damage source, and evocation as a utility/ranged damage source.

I put some XP in invocation too, so I could change good and count on some new healing source using this skill. I don't plan to use my mana for anything else than recharging wands, so I may have some margin for this ...

I was thinking about switching god to TSO, but it may be too early ?
I mean, I don't know if I can resist Makhleb's penance ... But as he summons demons (right ?), that may help me get some piety from TSO, right ?
To be noted, the decks I found may also help me against Makhleb's penance ! :D

Also, any advice on which branch I should go through first ?
I haven't found many resist Items (no poison resist, so snake pit .. :s ), and nearly no (rand)artifacts (cursed -1/-1 morningstar, yay...), so I don't know what to do.

Does anyone have any advice for starting a successful Draconian Transmuter?
It's one of those combos I really like the idea of but can't seem to get off the ground. I'm not a great player (I commonly see lair, and my lifetime record is two runes in one game, but I've never seen the majority of branches) so keep that in mind.

My idea so far has been to train unarmed up to around 5 and then switch to transmutations and just keep working on that. I use beastly appendage to melee things and switch to spider form once I can. I've been going with Sif Muna with the idea that they'll give me Dragon Form eventually, but I haven't actually survived long enough to get more than one star of piety on my best run. That's as far as I've gotten because I keep getting splatted by about D8.

How much use should I be getting out of Sticks to Snakes? I'm not a big fan of messing around with wielding arrows and such so I'm probably not abusing it as much as I should. Also, should I be holding off on training transmutations until I pick up Sif for faster piety gains?

I also thought it might be cool to branch off into whatever type of magic matches my colour aptitudes once those come out, but it's obviously been moot so far.

put as much xp as possible in unarmed. Train transmutations and some spellcasting just enough to reliable cast your highest transmutation. You should probably go beastly-spider-stickstosnakes(powerful summoning spell, really usefull) blade hands. After that invest some points into dodge and fighting. your real goal shouldn't be dragonform but necromutation, it is truly amazing. Get summoning up if you plan to go hell/tomb. Sif is a great god for transmuters thanks to the channeling + lichform combo = almost infinite summons. Blink and haste are always great, you should see when you like to branch out to that.

You know when x-ing at summons there's a line about "does not grant any experience, nutrition, or items"? I'm pretty sure that also includes piety, since piety is tied to experience (bool). Penances aren't intended to be a source of resources, otherwise you'd hear people talking about farming a god like they do Abyss/Pan/Zig.

To be noted, the decks I found may also help me against Makhleb's penance ! :D
Or they can kill you with bat-metamorphosis. Check the bot pages for each card that can appear in those decks, and remember you can get several of the worst ones in a row.

I suspect that which branch, if any, you take now should be a lesson in detecting difficulty. If you need to ask, you probably need the practice. Also, you desperately need a stash, since those scrolls will burn, your cure mutation will shatter, and you're lugging around an enchanted chain mail you've apparently decided not to identify (since you have plenty of R.C.).

Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

So I actually got a TeAE with both Tornado and Chain Lightning castable post-Lair... eeeeeehhhhh. I died a few dungeon levels after that, since Tornado just can't get enough of putting the biggest possible melee threats right next to me, and Tengu aren't exactly built for meleeing titanic slime creatures [while Kirke turns you into a pig].

I'm not actually impressed, though. The Air school has excellent support skills, but as a main damage dealing source... I'm not sure. I dislike Tornado, at least for 3-rune runs, since most of my tengus don't even lift, and chain lightning is bizarre. It can instagib single threats, or do a bit of damage to groups. Or instagib groups. It's kind of unreliable, is what I'm saying. I might try another run, or I might switch to EEs. I actually got a job, so I won't be able to play remotely as much as I want to, though :|
