A lot of problems with the wiki would be solved if they formatted it like DF's with the "this article is up to date with this version" thing.  Although it wouldn't solve the stuff that is completely wrong for every version.

The wiki does have that, from what I've looked at recently, though I didn't look closely at everything. It is possible not everything has been handled that way yet.

So you know how Tengu Chaos Knight was a Nemelex Choice combo last tournament? I was watching 78291 attempt a 15-runer on that one. He was fighting Asmodeus, you know - the guy who summons a bunch of fire-jerks, throws hellfire around and all that?

Xom polymorphed 78291 into an ice beast, while fighting Asmodeus. Didn't even have time for a teleport. So ... yeah.

edit : Oh wow, trunk seems to have a lot of new stuff... Three new species, a ton of new monsters, and apparently a new branch? Pretty cool stuff. If we can get a new magic school it'd be awesome.

Spoiler: Finally died (click to show/hide)

So this was the farthest I've ever gotten in dungeon crawl. I didn't take the advice from earlier on and get my weapon skill up to 10+ immediately - in fact, it was only around 11 when I died. That Scimitar of Flaming Death made me arrogant. I thought I could melee Fannar due to this, but I got surrounded by ice beasts and realized too late a mottled dragon had burnt my last teleport.

It's interesting how quickly the danger picks up as you go deeper. Post-temple, I didn't find a single unique that I could slay without any kind of trouble. Hopefully, during the next run, I'll get some more resistances (maybe from more than ONE useful ring the entire game) and take on a branch. Improvement!

Lol if you go for a 15 runer, dumping xom is really the only option. he WILL kill you, ANY random element in the game will kill you.
Xom's temper does seem to have been improved a lot though. I get the feeling the mutations are now biased towards good and he rarely summons hostile without being bored any more. He also regularly summons friendlies when the tension is high. He's does seem to confuse a lot (you, the enemy, or both) and other random stuff like turning into a tree, repeatedly teleporting, blinking, switching positions, polymorphing enemies (lol he polymorphed Xtahua into an acid blob) and a lot of casting inner flame on enemies (really annoying as in groups they chain react) he also gives a lot of choko {god gift}.

Rob, I think they just made brown chunks give less nutrition, which is god damn, why did it take you so long to get there ughhhhh.

Freeform, you really need to let us look at your skills, man :D We could all be a lot more helpful knowing that.

For what it's worth, though, the only time I got a non-standard melee going was when I explicitly didn't train only weaponskill. I've watched 78291 a hundred times and yes, he does train a single skill at a time, starting with weapon skill. He is also a nearly legendary crawl savant. For me, though, dealing in blocks is significantly easier. So yes, professionals really do train a single skill at a time. Don't feel it necessary to mimic them no matter what, though.

One of the reasons I feel extremely certain I can 5-rune any given HEIE [and I did, in fact, get my one and only HeIE in the tourney to 7 runes before dying in extended] is that HE has good enough apts to allow me to slap everything I need on, and simply switch around later. Is it optimal - god, no. Is it easier on the whole, giving me less firepower but greater survivability? Yes.

edit : Leafsnail, they're never going to, because it's the driving force behind the "no grinding" idea of the game. Crawl developers have adopted a strict no-grinding policy, and the food clock is the main mechanic forcing you to dive deeper and deeper. It's also what differentiates crawl from a variety of other roguelikes, I guess.

Play a mummy.

Or a kobold, those are almost as good (they don't have the high food clock of the other saprovores but they can still eat everything).

Ah, if only mummy weren't so crippled with every skills that are not necromancy, maybe i would play them more.

Personnally i never had any fun with the "you're hungry" game in Crawl, the only way i think it does not annoy me is for spell hunger, it's a good mechanism to just not spam higher level spells at a level your character is not powerfull enough to be supposed to cast it that repeatedly.
But for moving , resting and hitting things in melee, it's plain annoying to me.

I wish ring of sustenance and amulet of gourmand weren't so rare in my games. Autoexploring without them usually result in a "hungry" every 15 seconds with eating chunks.

I killed a steam drake and it left a corpse, but I stupidly forgot to skin it for a steam dragon armor before the corpse rotted away.

Though the armour changes in trunk I don't know if it would still be as useful as they were in the past. I should hope so but learndb lacks a lot of information about the armour changes.
