Yeah, due to the "wacky" damage calculations, you pretty much always want a weapon with higher base damage, because of how it works, as Vogon explained it really well.

Man, I want to play more crawl, now the tourney is over, but I don't have the time  :( I thought I'd be burned out, but with how much faster offline is, and the tons of build I wanted to run online but didn't get around to I actually want to play even more.

Say, if I want to do a full-on blasty Earth elementalist, do I really need to go sludge elf and deal with a -2 Conj apt? Seems it's either that, a Deep Elf, hope for a Grey Draconian or do a Human. Or a Deep Dwarf but I already won one, and I really don't want anything to do with another.

You could always try a MuEE. It's basically a standard Mummy, so what's the worst to happen?

The widely accepted strategy for Elf is to not do Elf.

Sludge Elves are generally pretty poor due to being frail without particularly good stats or apts.  Deep Elf or High Elf or anything with a reasonable amount of intelligence would probably be fine.

e: I guess they're good at transmutations but low HP and melee fighting don't really synergise too well.

Yeah, there's a reason for why I've played this for so long and that's been my best run. I don't really do my research.

The widely accepted strategy for Elf is to not do Elf.

Elf has pretty good rewards and is not that hard for a character who's sufficiently prepared. Sure, you almost definitely don't want to do it when you first see it, but to never do it is a bit silly.

I'd really like to play crawl again, but I can't get it to start up anymore. It won't load the game, neither tiles nor console, neither trunk nor regular.

Windows Vista is my OS. And this happened from one day to the next. Uninstalling and reinstalling another version doesn't help.

It's mainly just that it's really painful to keep being banished (not so much in an "I'm going to die" way but in a "this is really boring" way), and I've never gotten any game-changing rewards out of it.  By the time I'd feel comfortable doing Elf I'd feel pretty comfortable doing basically everything else anyway.

You can do the early elf levels as a mage with one of the better cloud spells. Floodfilling Poisonous cloud in a level of twisting corridors makes it fairly easy to just fire off clouds so that only one square is visible and the rest goes deep down the corridor.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

Clouds of any kind are a free Elf:3. I pretty much do it on all my casters who have clouds. You don't even need fancy tactics - stand at the very edge of the corridor to the end vault, shout your lungs out, fill the corridor with the gas and start backing away. The elves will keep going towards you instead of casting spells [mostly], so untill a master archer comes, you're safe.

Nothing in Elf sees invisible either, so that's another option.

On melees I tend to put it off a bit, but the best tactic with melee is to dig a corridor parallel to the entrance one, so you can keep just one caster in vision at once.

Something like this :

Code: [Select]
# #
# #MAIN CORRIDOR
# #
# #
#@#
# E

Where hopefully the E is the only enemy you'll have to fight, if you can kill it quickly enough.

Just do what all the cool kids do and play online instead.

Interesting to see from the tournament result page :
http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/0-12-tournament-results

That the majority of tourney games and wins have been done with graphic tiles instead of ASCII :
Quote
Proportion of players using webtiles: 71.7% (71.3%)
Proportion of winners using webtiles: 63.3% (59.0%)

Not a surprise though Crawl benefit from superb quality tile work.

Meanwhile, still having lots of fun with my Orc troopers.

A pity most of them will most likely die from the horrors lurking bellow

So I got a HuFi to XL 19, cleared the lair, the mines and the shoals, got my first rune, woohooo ! then stupidly died to Nikola. Especially since I managed to flee once but instead of cleverly going onto something else,I came back with javelins, nets and curare to try again...

Inspired by your screens, I then tried a HOPr, and it is indeed great fun :D Had a crazy run where I found +4/+4 or randart heavy axes around every corner, found two potions of experience before D:8 and found a bug/glitch : using an experience potion on two weapon skills that crosstrain get you both skills higher than if you took any of each alone, providing one of them gets higher than the other; the crosstrain bonus is retro-applied to the calculation (I had axes at 6 and maces at zero; taking axes alone would take it at 14, maces alone at 7; taking both would somehow take the cross train bonus of maces being at 7 and apply it to axes being at 6, resulting in axes getting to 15). I don't know if I'm very clear ?

Died stupidly at XL15 trying to take an enormous slime thing by myself :/ I was getting a bit overconfident with all my randarts broad axes and my axe skill at 25.

Aaaaand the highlight of tonight. I had a new HuFi running, pretty good start and all. Very promising, I'd say. Worshipped Okawaru. Stopped at the temple for a scrolls and potions ID party. Went clicking through my scroll. Happened on a random effect one. Clicked the second to clear inventory space, summoned pretty butterflies everywhere. Clicked next scroll.

Immolation.

Killed eight allied butterflies.

Max Okawaru penance.

A bit disheartened, I played carelessly and later got blasted charging a pond full of electric eels.

How does penance work ? Does gaining piety can get you back in god's grace or do you just wait it out ?

Penance only get removed with time, from bot+wiki :
Every 20 turns 1% of chance of being subject to retribution
Retribution is from some possible slow/confused/etc../nothing effect that can be resisted
Each time you are subject to retribution either you resist or not, you lose 1d3 penance points

From the bot it appears that Okawaru set you to 25 penance points.
That's not the worst amount of penance, Sif Muna or Trog gives 50 that takes apparently for not particularly lucky people, more than 5 thousands of turns to get away (as the 1% of chance to lose penance points every 20 turns is not much if you're not lucky) and i have read for some people (probably the less lucky) it was near 20000 turns of waiting

Meanwhile, every few thousand of turns (while you still have penance points), Okawaru send you a squad of angry monsters, that can sometime be quite strong (though fortunately not berserked like Trog does)

That's from abandonment. Penance from other sources would be a different amount (25 penance from any violation at all would be pretty absurd).
