Actually, if you're prepared, Trog wrath is simple. The weakening effect is hard to counter, but fire miscast is soakable with rFire, and the summons are beatable if you can manipulate the dungeon a bit, or find a good spot.

It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I'm pretty sure the only rFire I have is on weapons I wouldn't want to use, and the weakening stuff when fighting berserked giants is more risk than I'm really willing to take for a few spells.

You know they've got precompiled binaries up on their site, right?

sudo apt-get update is nice though.

Ended up getting killed by a dragon, I really did need some rFire.  >:( Got my first rune though, so that's cool.

How the hell are you guys so good?
I always end up being killed by a hobgoblin with a club or something.

After constantly dying in ridiculous way you begin to pick up on certain survival techniques, and methods/steps to take to avoid death. Sometimes death is inevitable due to RNG, terrible circumstances, or terrible decisions made before the "I'm DOOOOMED" moment.

A major survival technique is stair dancing. Be smart about it, always know how far away you are from a secure up/down staircase. If you run into a room full of orcs for example, and your character is still early, run towards the nearest staircase and bring a single orc with you. Take him out, rest, and either fish up some more orcs or find a different way to reenter that level. Bringing up more baddies may be a really bad idea depending on how narrow the "safe" side is, and how many things are surrounding the "unsafe" side. Never engage orc hunting parties unless you know that you can take out the priest quickly. The longer you're in their vision range the more likely you are to die. Remember to learn from each and every one of your deaths, if you have to write down notes then do it. And don't be afraid to skip entire d-levels if things are too hot, like a roaming sigmund/grinder, or some ogres which you can't handle. Or a ghost.

Speaking of orc priests.. I just lost my level 15 Fighter to a single orc priest due to stupidity. I simply refused to quaff my last heal wounds potion while I swung at him, and he ended up smiting away the last few hitpoints. It would have helped if I checked what armor he was wearing, that was probably why I didn't kill him quickly enough. Had some good Okawaru gear too.. oh well.

Be deliberate with every move, especially combat. It's easy when the last five strikes have missed or glanced to start mashing the key....and that's usually when a maximum damage attack comes out of left field, takes 80% of your HP, and then the next attack kills you.

And use everything at your disposal. Potions, scrolls, all that extra junk you tote around...my tendency is to wait until a crisis to use it. But when you've realized you're in crisis, it's too late to do a lot of things. A potion of might against a horde of 10 guys doesn't really help you. A potion of might against a hill giant evens the odds a little.

Leading a tough enemy up to a cleared level and just leaving them there is a pretty decent tactic as long as you remember you did it and know you can run fast enough to leave them there.

Be deliberate with every move, especially combat. It's easy when the last five strikes have missed or glance to start mashing the key....and that's usually when a maximum damage attack comes out of left field, takes 80% of your HP, and then the next attack kills you.

Yep. 90% of my losses are due to thinking "ok so I'm doing barely any damage but the NEXT attack will take them out" and other such nonsense. If in doubt, always run. And god powers/spells/wands/scrolls/potions are there for a reason. Losing some piety/food/charges is always preferable to dying.

All this advice is stuff I tend to forget while playing, which is why I've never got close to winning.

That's what happens when you hang around on D:1 for too long.

I didn't, it's turn 4213. I had barely explored D:2 and went back to pick up some runed darts.  :P

Anyways, do you guys dip all stairs before diving onto the next level?

I think it only takes 1000 turns on a level for out-of-depth monsters to show up.

Anyways, do you guys dip all stairs before diving onto the next level?

I used to. I don't now because you might get a timed portal.

I always at least count the stairs after I think I cleared a level, if I count three up and down, I move on.  Its not a bad idea to dip all the stairs, it makes autotravel faster.

Right, but let's say you're only 1/3 done D:12, and take a stairway to D:13, and the game tells you there's a bazaar or a labyrinth on the new level. Then you basically have to continue to explore D:13 instead of going back to D:12, lest the timer run out.

Holy cow, I managed to raise a breakthrough Merfolk Crusader of Okawaru. I've never actually played Crusader up to this point before, and damn they are powerful (especially when they get that demon trident). Found a randart amulet with Sinv and +rage. So I can hero, haste, finesse, Ozocubu's Armour, and go berserk. Okawaru gave me some nifty boots of running, too, so I'm doing very well.

So yeah,  does finesse and haste stack? I don't think so but I can't find any info about that on the wiki.
