Naga Venom Mage shouldn't be THAT hard, unless maybe if you have 3 MP at first level (Sting can be slightly unreliable). Mummies can be quite difficult to start because of their poor aptitudes. High elves shouldn't be too bad, so I'm not sure of the problem there. Just keep the advice I mentioned in mind, I suppose: Be very careful, avoid attacking multiple enemies at once, and dance around avoiding things to regain MP if absolutely necessary.

Apparantly even with rF+++ hellfire can still do 48 damage in one hit to you.  Best Troll Chaos Knight attempt in a long time.  Note to self, nothing resists hellfire.

Arr! My Demonspawn warriors have the worst luck... Getting a good mutation or two and then BAM! Unique monster rush, most often sigmund. Can not believe how common he has been lately!

Fiends are bad news. :-(
Attempting Elf:5 with a level 17 Troll is asking for trouble, though perhaps that sweet rod of destruction made you a lttle overconfident. I like to at least have abjuration (or better yet silence) to deal with demonologists. Summoning-types can be a royal pain for melee-based characters, my level 27 minotaur gave up on the last level of elf solely because of the demonologists. He even had a rod with abjuration, but it was not enough.

Ok, guys, it's official now. I am THE most irresponsibly stupid crawler right now.

See, I started a HeBe, meaning to switch to Ash at some point and cast big fuckoff spells. But things were not going along well. I had a +1, +4 short sword for the majority of my play time, switching to a sabre of venom at about xlvl 10. Things would just not die - I was forced to use brothers in arms every tough fight and as a result, even with my amulet of faith, Trog just granted me my first gift at lvl 12. A runed eveningstar, even though I had 7 short blades, 3 axes and 1 long blades. I didn't even look at the bloody thing. He does gift me arrows every couple of steps, though, since I decided to train bows - a ranged attack is always useful and I could just transfer it later on.

I'm just going to post the first part of my chardump and I want you to see if you can find out what's wrong with my poor high elf berserker.

Code: [Select]
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup version 0.9-a1-150-gd92f786 character file.

DeBe... huh. That's now on my play for fun queue.

Also, I really wish you could poly into monsters in DCSS :( that's a major thing missing, I think.

even though I had 7 short blades, 3 axes and 1 long blades.

On your dump, you're using a scimitar, that's a long blade.
So having skill 1 in long blade certainly does not help your berzerker at all to hit and damage anything well enough

Additionally as i mentionned in a previous post, both berzerk and Trog have been nerfed in 0.9 , Trog gives less gift and should now give nearly only anti-magic weapon (so would not provide much help against non-magic user enemies) and berzerk is slower apparently (x1.5 instead of x2 speed from the commit), so maybe you should get more strength to get more damage bonus, as if you're slower you'll need to be able to damage quicker.

Oh, and the Crawl devs release a new version of 0.8 , 0.8.1, fixing some problems 0.8 had :

Minor question: Zonguldrok or a randart +8/+9 vamp flail that adds two dex? This is for a primarily summoner sif mummy that is using melee + slow/meph to take out various weaker enemies or add a bit extra damage to the massive imp swarms. There's opportunity cost on Zong (1350 gold, which I just now reached), but reaping sounds really tasty, if only to lessen the constant (and usually indulged) urge to spam horde until shadow imps pop up. Plus Zong is an extra +1 to hit... and Zonguldrok, amazingly, sounds better than "Qaefoemo."

Nah, I'm using an older trunk because I still haven't abused Tornado enough and they nerfed that far before the poor berserker :) So I'm fine in that regard. Other than that, this is my 10th or 11th DeBe in a row, cause I always tab after dying a stupid death, and, unbelievable as it sounds, DeBes suffer a lot of those in the first 4-5 levels.

Long blades are at 6 now, thanks to cross-training and I found a better scimitar, though still unbranded. Incidentally the poor DeBe is still alive, though I've kinda run out of options as to where to go. I could go and spam Trog's bros at everything but I'll likely not get any gifts at all. 'tis a conundrum, really.

And Frumple (if your question still stands) I'm not really knowledgeable about weapons, but I'd recommend Zonguldrok. It's been changed in 0.9, too, so I'm not sure how the good gods react to it, but I suppose you're with Vehumet for a summoner anyway. The vamp flail is not really good, because the vamp brand still has a rather large hunger cost upon wielding, and you can't butcher with it. Or so it was at the earlier versions x] I've been left behind somewhat, since I still want to toy with the overpowered Tornado.

Ah, you missed the mummy part. Vamp brands are harmless to me, plus I've currently got zero reason to butcher anything -- s'generally better to let the imps raise whole corpses and I don't have that chunk-to-mana spell yet. Plus m'sif, not vehe. Could do th'rapid-mana-regen via whichever staff that is and switch to V-mutt, I guess, but intrinsic (costless!) channel energy is a bit more versatile. Would render the weapon question moot, too :P

Just noticed the caveat on 0.9, according to the knowledge bot anyway. No XP for th'kills the zombies it raises manage. Considering I'm already getting reduced XP gains from imp-mobbing anything, I probably can't afford that. The zombies my shadow imps raise give XP when they kill something :-\

Onward with the queef flail, I guess.

Derp. Yeah, for some reason I decided you were a naga. Don't ever ask me why. Other than that, well, yeah, the flail might be better in these circumstances. Happy flailin'!

Yeah, rF doesn't affect Hellfire and it bypasses AC as well. There's very little you can do about it except have high HP and/or kill the offending bastard right away.

  • Hill giants and other huge races/creatures can walk through deep water. Careful!
  • "Good" isn't very good, although as a mummy I guess necromancy miscasts are less of a big deal (not sure about the summoning ones, though).

Max piety sif, baby. Dere'z no miscasts 'ere ;D

Anyway, Haunt's at very good, now. Cleaned out the orc mines, lair, hive, starting in on the snake pit. Haunt spam murders everything. Probably making me a little overconfident, but eh. Killed Erolcha and some D-something unique (Donald?) on the same screen, in ~5 turns, strictly via haunt. Killed 6 orc high priests at th'bottom of the mine, most of them grouped together (iirc, there was 3-4 in one room!), again, via haunt, with abjuration clearing out their own summons. Maud died in th'pit. Haunt's just... so pleasant.

General strategy is to blow my full mana load at whatever I see (usually 3-4 haunt casts), then tell whatever pops out to wait (i.e. wander around murdering everything), after which if anything's left standing I start spitting out more haunts whenever channel energy lets me do it (usually between 2-4 turns). It'll be a while before this stops murdering absolutely everything (mid-deep vaults, usually), so for the time being it's fun times and violent murder. Yaay~
