So, I've been running mummy summoners recently, and I've got another good one going ("good" here meaning "Has learned Summon Ugly Thing and Recall").
As those are spells i never use, are the summon ugly/horrible things staying for a long enough time to be usefull as a support/meat shield ?
Or are they like the summon hydra, 1 turn ! and they disappear before killing anything (as by the time you can reliably use that spell, monsters will not die to an hydra) , letting you with a lot less magic points (summon hydra cost 7 mp !)  and having to summon something else to help ? certainly the spell that disapointed me the most when i used it.

On a recent run i could try the Malign Gateway spell too, it's really fun for its effect, but that's it.

As it takes a lot of turns before the tentacles actually spawn and attack, it will let you then being hammered by monsters that are as usually targetting only you. And worse, you can lose 1 point of intelligence when casting it.

That's more a spell you should cast in a room, then run away instead of providing a real support and meat shield (and in that kind of room configuration it's powerfull), but if you don't have any restore abilities potions anywhere, that's a spell you're better never cast then, intelligence points being too valuable for spell power and spell hunger to afford losing any of them while there are more interesting summon spell to use.

Why did I have to backpedal from Rupert right into Nikola?
During the tourney i lost a character just like that, i was running from an unique, falling into another unique, used a teleport scroll to escape both that were blocking both side of a corridor (and so taking a few hits before the teleport took effect), only to land near another unique that let my character no chance.
When Crawl really wants to kill your character, it will do.

Maybe your summoning endeavours wouldn't contain so much misfortune if you weren't holding have a +3 +11 antimagic hammer with the name of a god that hates all magic printed on it. It affects you too.

Just a thought.
Hehe.  But it's so shiny!

Yes, they stay for a very good length of time.  I can usually bring together a fantastic army of them, and there's never been anything they haven't been capable of crushing.

...Unfortunately, this time, I didn't notice I'd summoned a hostile one and died to it.  Arrrrrgghhh.  I need to work out how to make that initmodification.

Summon hydra is actually pretty good in spite of the short duration, I find.  If you need something tough dead fast, they can deal with it (although you probably need channeling and high invocations to recover from the mana cost, and you probably want some defences up before summoning hydras).

So. Xom is an asshole. Grinder homing in on my 3hp Orc CK, I use a Teleport Scroll.

You read a scroll of teleportation!
Grinder barely misses you!
Grinder misses you!
Grinder barely misses you!
Your surroundings feel different.
Your surroundings feel different.
Xom laughs maniacally.

Xom laughs maniacally.
Grinder hits you!
You die...
Xom roars with laughter!

So, I teleport away from grinder twice, only to have Xom teleport me right next to him the turn afterwords both times.

Spriggan Wizard. I was in Lair:3 or so, and saw Rupert. I panicked, because Rupert can go berserk, cast paralyze and confuse, and was carrying a big axe.

Out of complete idiocy on my part, I decided to use a wand of polymorph on him, thinking he wouldn't keep his spells. He did. So then I was dealing with "Rupert the Iron Troll". A berserking, confusing, paralyzing iron troll.

Thankfully, even when berserking he was slower than me, so I could hightail it back up the stairs and avoid him from then on, until I learned Orb of Destruction and had some fun revenge.

Speaking of horrible polymorphs, I cast an unidentified wand at a Hobgoblin (on D:2) only to have it transform into a goddamn Boggart and suddenly have a pack of (thankfully weak!) monsters all over the place.  It's a good thing Boggarts don't have any MR... I was able to transform it again into a Giant Newt.

Boggarts cast Shadow Creatures, which relies on the current level's monster set... so later on, they can be a real problem.

For real fun though, in later Dungeon/Vaults, enchanting a boggart is amazing. Same as summoning Blue/Green Deaths with Makhleb's Greater Servant power. They'll cast Shadow Creatures and give you long-enough-lasting hordes of level-appropriate creatures... which can sometimes mean things like deep elf bands, yaktaur packs, elephants, etc.

So, Mummy Summoner.  I find 2 rings and 2 amulets on D:1.

Guess what?  A ring of sustenance, a ring of life protection, an amulet of the gourmand and an amulet of controlled flight.  Argghh.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Hahaha, oh Xom, if I could commit deicide against any god, it would be you. At least the slime god is useful...

Well, you DO commit deicide on Jiyva.

But yeah. Jiyva is kickass.

Problem, Leafsnail?
I've taken revenge by learning Haunt and, thanks to my Robe of the Archmagi and natural necromancy bonus, casting it at 8 stars.  Constantly.  On everything.

This is just the best spell.  Nothing can compare to suddenly surrounding a sleeping monster with deadly ghosts, or dropping them into the middle of a hostile demon horde to fight it out.  The only thing I need now is Ugly Thing for my meatshield... GIMME IT NOW MUNA

Xom can generally provide significant benefit over time, if you can manage the short-term problems he causes and keep him amused. He's definitely difficult by design, being so unpredictable.

I want to try Jiyva, but stat shuffling seems like an extremely horrible mechanic.

HAHAHAHAH this is great.  A horde of summon ugly things can deal with pretty much anything (once you add the line "force_more_message = It doesn't look very happy" - this stops you from accidentally walking into a hostile summon and getting yourself killed.  With this line, you just need to duck behind one of your friendly Ugly Things as they tear apart the hostile ones) and haunt on top of that... well, it's pretty much one neverending massacre.  I've never felt more ready to get the runes and smash everything.

I have these archetypes that I always play. My favorite one so far is ABOMINATOR, a naga transmuter. I just love imagining the terror when suddenly a group of orcs are encloaked in a cloud of poisonous gas, and how suddenly this horrible snake-man with enourmous blades for hands chops them to pieces. The hunters become the hunted.

I also frequently use Gatsu, who, needless to say, is a human barbarian wielding a two-handed sword even if better weapons are available.

Tell me about your favorite characters!
