Yep. To be fair, his torment resistance is far from complete, but it's still very powerful, and any sort of necromancy miscast (including mummy curses) is prevented.

I've always thought that Necromancy is way too broad and powerful a school of magic. You have summoning-type magic, damage spells, some buffs, an invincibility spell later on, and all kinds of other crap.

But then again, there is a massive downside. I think we all know what I mean! That's right, you can't worship Fedhas, and without the aid of grass where would you be?  :P

EDIT: Freaking two headed ogre... Well what ever. Need suggestion for race/background that will work for worshipping Nemelex. I feel lucky today.

Nemelex is fairly all-purpose. You want someone who will be good at Evocations, since you'll be doing a lot of it, but honestly, there aren't many classes that won't make good use of Nemelex. You might want a race with decent Evocations aptitude (not deep dwarf!), but that probably doesn't matter much. Maybe a spriggan enchanter, or something similar?

Evocations? Well, spriggan artifacter it is! I believe in the heart of the cards!  :P

I would have made a kingdom hearts reference, but couldn't think of any.

If you can pull it try Troll Hunter of Nemelex and try to get a late game shuffle spellcaster troll. Use the scramble card to switch you insane STR value with your int and start training necromancy. You will have a huge amount of hp along with possibly the ability to cast necromutation and other powerful spells.

When i heard about it I always wanted to try it :)

I cannot think of any good reason to actually play an artificer, but sure, why not.

Artificers get a starting bonus to evocations, and if you get Nem early on, that bonus is useful as heck.

Just make sure you take the rod so that you don't need to worry about finding scrolls of recharge, and having 6 + 3 in your primary skill at the start of the game is pretty good... Then when you find an alter to Nem your laughing. It ain't go troll berserker, but it is really fun to play as, especially as you can sacrifice all your meat rations without worry for awesome decks.

Fair enough, but what's harder? Training Evocations up from zero when you have a ton of tools to do it, or training fighting and magic skills from zero when it's hard to do it safely and you won't be getting any spellbooks reliably? It's easy as pie to train up Evocations, especially when Nemelex gives you fairly safe tools to do it, but getting magic when you don't start with it is a bitch. Raising a single skill through use is almost never hard.

I guess the Evocations boost helps in the short term, but being able to cast spells helps more. Rod of Striking isn't that bad, but it does about as much damage as Magic Dart and can miss.

Finally managed to clear Crypt with my mummy air elementalist. Strangely it wasn't the greater mummies that threatened me the most (tornado, dispel undead, and flight/swiftness easily deal with them) but rather the guardian mummies, because of their stat rot death curse. I almost died using Tornado to clear out a pack, bringing my Dex to 1 and my int pretty low too. Used self-restoration to survive that, but that wasn't something I wanted to rely on for Crypt:3. My original plan was to get enough necro/summoning to use haunt reliably, but even after clearing everything short of hells and slime (plus Ash's extra experience from being almost completely cursed) Haunt was still only 'very bad' or so. Thank god for gauzy fan giving unlimited summons instead (sidenote: they seem to be immune to tornado as well, a big plus).

The last level of crypt had probably 2 or 3 dozen guardian mummies, plus the greater mummies and priests that would've been smiting me from a distance. Took a lot of stair scumming so that my elementals could clear the mummies out while keeping pace with my ability to resummon more (slightly hindered/helped by the fact that Crypt:2's stairs down only allow 3 elementals to accompany me down at a time). Good news is Haunt is Excellent now.

Still need +F, though. The quality of artifacts I've found on this run has been ludicrously abysmal. Lots of -atk/dam, -stats, useless stats (hunger, +Fr), lots of artifacts with only one or two modifiers. There were definitely a few gems but everything has either been obvious to use or completely useless to me, rather than a tough decision to tradeoff like in previous characters.

Slime, then onto easier Hells, Abyss, maybe even Pand and a [take off every!] Zig.

Wait, since when are there that many mummies in Crypt? Sure you don't mean Tomb?

In my last game going into a labyrinth seemed like my only possible means of escape from some tough unique I only encountered because of some OOD yaks on the level above. I nearly starved, nearly died fighting the minotaur, left the labyrinth and immediately got killed in one hit by the same unique. Sometimes the game just wants to kill you...
