So. A cursed spellbook. Does that actually do anything? Bad Things(tm) if you fail to mem from it? Not sure if it's just a bug or something new. Learndb didn't mention anything about books being cursed, that I could find.

Also, what does Learn mean by LRD needing a spellpower of 60 to destroy stone walls? I'm an AE so I have a negative modifier to learning Earth and I have subsequently have 0 earth magic skill, but between a spellcasting of 18, 31 int, an artifact ring of WIZ and a robe of the Archmage, my LRD has 7 #s. I interpret that to mean I have a spellpower ~70. However, even after casting LRD on the same stone wall in the Crypt ~15 times, I still haven't destroyed the wall. Is there a formula somewhere with the chances?

At the momeny I'm playing a DEWz, it's the first time I've ever got controlled blink to cast reliably (I've got further before but have either died before training translocations or not found the spell at all, but I found it really early and put all my exp into translocations for a while), and that spell is a real game-changer.

EDIT: And I just found the worst robe I've ever seen...  :) Cursed, -2 to all stats, -4 evasion, prevents casting, random teleports, --stealth, mutation and recurse.  :o

That would be the robe of misfortune.

My SE transmuter died because I didn't notice I was slowed due to a miscast next to a hydra, such a pity I just cleared the lair and orc mines, and already had some skill in necromancy :(

Its a chance to destroy them. One would need to code dive to get the exact number, but I suspect the percentage is something like (Spellpower-60)/x, with x being whatever.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

my LRD has 7 #s. I interpret that to mean I have a spellpower ~70.

Why would you interpret it that way? Nobody ever said that one hash-mark is 10 spellpower. Here's what learndb has to say:

<Henzell> spell power[1/5]: (Spellcasting/2  +  2*avg school skill) * INT divided by 10 * (1.5 ^ enhancer count).  Now halve the part over 50, halve the part over 100, halve the part over 150, and plain cap at 200.  Negative enhancers use 0.5, not 0.66.
<Henzell> spell power[4/5]: Got bars (#)?  You have at least 0, 5, 10, 15, 25, 35, 50, 75, 100, 150 power.

With seven, you have a spell power between 50 and 75.

Beats me what the odds are, but even at high spell power, it can sometimes take a while.

From my experience with LRD in my only victory in the tournament last week, even if your spell power is higher than the required number to destroy a wall, the result will be very very random.

There are 2 locations i used LRD :
- in Lair:8 in which i had the undead vault, full of draining clouds and without anymore than 1 level of negative resistance, so it was simply out of question to go in there the normal way, so i tunnelled my way to the rune with LRD to have as few draining clouds as possible.
- in Crypt end floor in which i built a chokepoint (that was not available where i needed) to stand a chance against the huge legions of skeletal warriors and other nasty that were coming out of the main vault.

And at both locations i had spellpower higher than the required level to destroy those type of walls.

Result : sometime a wall was destroyed in only 1 shot, sometime it was always there after more than 20 shots (and i don't exaggerate) sometime it was destroye after 10 shots.
So it's very random.

My Kobold Stalker accidentally equipped a distortion brand dagger. I can't put it away since I would be in risk of banishment. So far I concentrated on stabbing with a saber of draining but with the distortion brand I can semi-reliably nuke down opponents with spells and teleport/banish them away if they get too close.

A distorsion dagger is an excellent weapon, as it may banish sometime (with luck) your opponents, meaning that it's a formidable last level of defense for a spellcasting character that does not have much combat skills and is forced to close fight.

Avoid a draining weapon, because it lower the amount of experience you'll get from the monsters you kill, meaning you will be behind in term of leveling and so in increasing danger the more you advance in the dungeon.

Distortion is fun, but can be a pain in the ass too. It can be hard to kill uniques without just banishing them instead, and blinking away spellcasting monsters isn't always good. It's a good thing it's a bladed weapon though, so you can still butcher.

Keep in mind that banished monsters do show up in the abyss if you ever go there, so there's a chance you'll meet them.

Draining weapons are actually very useful early game, and the XP drop isn't much.

Just lost a l17 DEWz, killed by a blademaster in Elf 5. I shouldn't have been anywhere near the damn thing but I thought if I repeatedly cast poison arrow it would die before I did. No idea why, I should have just teleported away, even with the lack of control.

Every single time I get a character to the point where they're good I get complacent and do something completely ridiculous like that.  >:(

So, suggestions on someone who has never reached D:7? I need a good class, I think. And strategies.

Troll berserker. The strategy consists of
A) Clawing enemies with your claws
B) Calling upon Trog for berserker strength to better claw enemies with your claws.

Trolls aren't quite as powerful in the endgame, I hear, but getting to D:7 should be a breeze.

Brothers in Arms is actually an invaluable ability as well, once you get it (BERSERKING GIANT allies). Trog's Hand is probably useful too.

Troll beserker, Minotaur fighter, spriggan stalker, vampire necromancer. Take your pick.

Trog's Hand is awesome. I use it earlygame to save myself from poison, later for those guys that like to invoke some elements on me.
