Xom granting you a kickass piece of equipment is usually followed up by him sending a demon army after you while you are healing.  He's sorta like an abusive spouse.
A really, really rich, abusive spouse.

I've never managed to get a Xom character far enough for anything really interesting to happen, I might try a few since it sounds kinda fun.

That bastard just gave me a demon army when I least needed it.
Then when I fight orcs he does nothing and I die.

Just lost by far the best character I've done, SpVm, XLvl 18, cleared most of the early branches except for the last levels of Elf and Snake Pits, died because sometimes I just don't think at all, didn't use any of the items I had to get out of a situation that quickly turned really bad when I forgot to keep Deflect Missiles up and ran into some yaktaurs. I had the WORST luck with equipment though, I found one randart hat: +2 str, -2 int... The only resistance I had was 2 life protection and one ring of fire, and I found probably 10 rings the entire game, most of them levitation. I literally had one amulet (resist mutation). Barely any shops, all full of normal unenchanted stuff. I only got that far by being insanely careful, then lost because of one moment of idiocy. Wasn't even that bad a fight that killed me, I could have got out of it easily...

Well, I just got my first win in Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup, so I wanted to post the log here.

http://crawl.develz.org/morgues/0.8/ZChris13/morgue-ZChris13-20110517-030627.txt

I'm telling ya, you don't need luck all ya need is skill! (like finding a wand of healing on D:4 or that katana on D:12)

But still, a seven rune win for my first win, I'm pretty proud of that.

Awesome, well done! Out of curiosity, how long did you play before you got the win?

50/50. On the one hand, your slower then everything at all times, on the other, you lack full slots to throw ponderous brands onto.

You could probably find a barding in the dungeon, but not early enough to really be worth it.

Yeah, actually, I hadn't realized Naga can wear both barding and robes. Would work then, though barding is RARE as heck.

I keep forgetting that Chei's Make Ponderous can't be used on artifacts. That's probably the biggest downside: either you can't use artifacts - with their myriad modifiers - or you don't get his huge stat boosts, which is pretty much the only reason to take him in the first place.

What do you suppose the chances are that the devs would rework that mechanic to allow ponderousness on artifact gear? Or perhaps alternate implementation that doesn't involve adding ponderous to armor. Maybe you gain the stat boost while praying, rather than being based on ponderousness, but still allow ponderousness to help build piety? Or base ponderousness/piety gain on being over-full on food, perhaps extending or even removing the cap on food, somewhat like how ghouls work (e.g. can stuff yourself silly, but food clock accelerates when 'overfull' so you don't get as much out of it).

That's why i don't take Chei, the fact ponderous does not work on artifacts piece of equipement that are extremely usefull in game due to the bonus in various area they provide is an annoyance.

Maybe it should be possible to keep the combination from being too powerfull, to get an artifact being able to obtain the Chei ponderous brand but with the new brand replacing randomly one of the bonus given by the artifact equipment, allowing you to lose one but gaining one.

Would still be too useful. Remember that you can still use the brand on branded items, say Magic Resist or similar, and it keeps the brand, PLUS chei gear counts as artifacts for purposes of corrosion and similar effects.

Also, Chei gives you rF+, rC+, and rN+, which at least helps counteract the lack of artefact equipment.
