Wow, chaos knights are really fun. I'm playing a troll chaos knight, and I'm currently level 10 and just entering the Orcish Mines. Xom really keeps you on your toes, but I'm having good luck so far. I found a kobold castle that gave me tons of experience, and a ring of poison resistance and sustenance. (Of course, now that I've posted this, I'm probably going to fie within ten minutes). :P

Edit: Ayup. Xom turned a griffon, which I could probably have taken, into a dragon. Which proceeded to breath fire until I was almost dead. I tried polymorphing it, but the anaconda it turned into killed me anyways. <_< Was my best game by far, though, at almost all of the mines cleared and about half of the lair done, and 15000 ending points.

Pro tip: Do more of the dungeon, and at least most of the lair, before setting foot in the mines. This is a good tip for virtually any character.

And don't underestimate the final floors of Lair. It may seem easy other than the occasional Death Yak or Elephant group....but the last level of Lair almost always lays it on really thick, especially depending on what Vault you got. I got an Elephant one this game and it's been pretty bad. I know I should save the last level of Lair until after Mines, but I'm always over confident and wanting to not have to return later.

Yeah, I realized that the mines were a bad idea around the time I was facing two high priests and several warriors at once, and only a quick scroll of teleportation saved me.

High Elves are really great at getting several magic skills and increasing them quickly, so you're not stuck with only 1 magic school for half the game and die soon because randomness has given everything you fight a nearly immunity to the magic school you follow.

And their high training capacity allow them to get hunger free spell quickly.

I knew freezing cloud was awesome from a previous High Elf run, but this new High Elf have not found any ice book (and i'm playing a fire elementalist).
At some point i found a book with poisonous cloud and became able to cast this one hunger free.

And it's very usefull too.
I was exploring a bit of Snake Pit and saw at the other side of a big room Margery and her Hell Knights.
Usually Margery is very very dangerous to my characters at the level i am when i meet her (she has 164 health and cast repeatedly fireball and bolt of fire). I had only a puny ring of fire (so only 1 level of fire protection)
They were not aware of my character (extraordinarily stealthy helps a lot) .

I flooded progressively the whole room in poisonous cloud (works like smite for the targetting so no need to move close or having clear LOS), once hell knight and Margery were touched, they were poisonned, i used Shadow Creature that spawned a few nagas and ran away with a potion of speed.

Came back later, Margery corpse and lots of hell knight items were on the ground, as i doubt the few nagas were strong enough, it's then the poisonous cloud that got them. they must have been poisonned by each tile they were forced to travel, getting them very high level of poisonning (poison clouds stay several turns).
Good that i have a nice artifact that come with poison resistance :)

I hope i'll find a book with ignite poison to have an use of poisonous cloud for poison immune enemies, but so far it has contributed greatly to the survival of my character.
And for those surviving up to close contact, sticky flame + poisonned drop their remaining health rather quickly.

Tried it out, but it seems so slow not playing with the mouse like I usually do. I've definitely been spoiled by that feature.

Being able to play tiles online will be a nice way to cut down on my constant savescumming: I have a habit of backing up my save file every time I quit, in case I die to something I term 'stupid.' Not a good way to learn the game, but better for fun factor... until you get bored because you're not 'challenged.'

Or you get sick of trying to beat an especially tough area 32,000 times. That's where my patience runs out, and makes me question why I should bother playing legit.

Or maybe you should just avoid that area, because Crawl isn't the kind of game that expects you to complete every single challenge every game, much less at any given time.

So, how do you even play felids? I tried being a monk or beserker, but their lack of escape options (no advanced items) and general low ability level (bad aptitudes, no armor, no weapons...) meant I died. Fast.

Is there some super-trick that I'm missing?

Not that I get... i've tried them in a few classes i think their aptitudes might suit and just haven't liked it at all.

Then again I'm a bad player all round.

Looking at the wiki, it sounds like they were designed to be stabbers. That would explain it- I have always disliked playing as stabbers, and I didn't even try it. Sounds like a good idea, but I'm going to have to skip that one.

Felid Crusader / transmuters. Survive until level 3, then berserk everything.

Heh, loved my Felid Zerker.

The only thing I don't like about them is their "Lives" system, which kind of makes it feel non-rougelike.
