It's a real shame Makhleb was removed from the starting god options, I think he offers an interesting enough gameplay style unlike say The Shining One which isn't much different and isn't much use in the early game. I'd say Makhleb is a better starting god than Zin, so I'm unhappy the way they did that.

DAMN IT, CRAWL! I lost my best character yet!

Damn it. Saw a small group of elite orc warriors, decided to take the stairs up. Was SURROUNDED by monsters. Saw an escape up in the south. Decided to go berserk and run for it. Should of fought the elite orcs instead. And this was my first char to beat a level of orcish mines.  ::)

Edit: Also my best randart.

Edit: Also, questions. Would that char be strong enough to go to the elven level? He killed a frost beast really early, instantly getting 2 levels and outclassing most enemies due to a lucky ring of ice. If I would survive, should I have bothered with the bow, even though I have a negative aptitude? It looks really good (the +4,+14 bow "Cafonav" {god gift, flame, Stlth++}).

If you can't clear out the orcish mines chances are you won't last long in the elven halls. Demon summoners and ranged attacks are a lot more common. The regular elf is approximately equal to an orc wizard, and they get much nastier than that. Clearing out the lair first (if not before the mines) would probably be a good idea, in fact it might be worth going further than that.

The Lair should probably be the first branch you clear in any case (although I guess there's no harm in doing Hive first if you happen to get it before Lair, since it's generally really easy with rPois).

So, when I was walkin' around with a new summoner, a sky beast appeared and ripped me into thousands of pieces.
Can anyone provide information on this weird creature?

When met early, it's really nasty (same indeed as an Ice Beast)

The orcish mines can be doable early, (especially if you have mephitic cloud or something), but I'd really recommend doing Lair first. The Elven Halls are pretty difficult, don't go there.

About Hive: If you have rPois and reasonably good AC and EV, the killer bees are annoying but virtually harmless. If you have only one of the two, they're reasonably easy, as long as you're careful. If you have neither, they're death on wings.

Also, I'm not sure if you know this already, but the bottom level of each branch is usually considerably more difficult than the rest of it. There is no shame in only exploring the first seven levels of the Lair of Beasts before turning back to return later.

Pretty new to Crawl, here's my best character so far. Died because I didn't notice I was overloaded and wasted a couple of valuable turns trying to climb up stairs to escape from the elf swarm <facepalm>. Pretty disappointed about losing, because it's better than any of my previous games by such an insane margin, but I guess I learned a lot and it's time to play 0.8....

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I really like spriggans and stealth, but I'm tempted to try a more durable race next time.

MnBe is one of the most forgiving setups.

Spriggans are pretty excellent, except for the hit points. But yeah, don't get overloaded. Being overloaded is bad. Also, you had a whole bunch of unidentified potions, scrolls and wands. You should really try to keep track of what you have in your inventory.

Yeah, I have a tendency to let things slide and identify a huge number of things at once, which is definitely a bad idea. Bad habits derived from years of playing more forgiving games are hard to lose. I tried a MnBe and it went pretty well until an unfair crowd surrounded me, which I still probably could have avoided if I was more careful. I tend to get bored and complacent with non magic-using characters, so I generally do ok then screw up massively.

Always fight in chokepoints if possible (only exception I can think of is if you're a Summoner, then it can be better to be out in the open so all your summons can gang up on enemies).  If it's not possible, make sure you have an easy escape route to stairs which you can run to if a large group of enemies surprises you.

Choke points are death in the Slime Pits, and yeah. Open spaces are a must if you're a summoner.

Slimes Pits in general is death, you shouldn't generally be trying it until you consider yourself an 'experienced' player. Not necessarily advanced or having successfully won, but know enough about preparation and tricks and such. Learndb can substitute for experience to an extent.

On the bright side, playing the 8.0 release, you won't have to worry about making that mistake again: attempting to ascend a staircase while overburdened should fail without consuming a turn (at least I thought I saw that while browsing the commit log once, maybe it was only mentioned in passing about a desired change here).

I'm sure I'm ashamed enough of that one I'll never forget it.  ;) Plenty of other mistakes to make though...
