Hmm... I usually play Transmuters as magically assisted monks.  Although Ogres are most definitely something you don't want to tangle with early.

That's basically the standard way of doing it, since they have so many form/self-transforming spells, pretty much all of which rely on Unarmed Combat.

I think this characters onto something good.  He's definitely got the highest damage output of any character I've ever had.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If my calculations are correct, a +8,+7 Blessed Trishula + 27 Polearms + +4, +5 Ring of Slaying should lead to some serious godstomping.  Especially when it comes to unholy creatures.

Just got the trunk build for 0.8.

Felid Summoners are awesome. (Summon Imp really helps, too. Considering its a second level spell. Plus, if it summons a shadow imp, booyah! free undead servants!)

Yeah. Summon imp is bat shit powerful for a level two spell. Just like evaporation.

Also, Ashenzari.

Saw an altar for him. It was in the entry vault on my latest attempt, but it was on the other side of an impassable lava pool. Anybody try playing as a worshipper of him yet?

Ash is pretty cool. The powers aren't very flashy, but quite useful. He grants monster detection, identifies all your items for you, increases the experience you get and lets you reallocate your skill points.

Be aware that some of this is changing in trunk, although I'm not entirely sure what yet.

Also, you forgot about See Invisible and Clarity.

Perfect. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going for another run for the orb.

0.8 is in feature freeze, so Ash is probably not going to receive any new changes before the release. Ashenzari got nerfed, but he keeps his broken exp gain.

I just thought about something with Ashenzari.

You gain piety by exploring, preferably with cursed items. But you can wipe your map with shift-x, ctrl-f. Does that mean you can scum Ash piety? I'm guessing not: that even though you wiped the map, the area still counts as explored. If not, that's a fair exploit for the religion, though functionally not all that huge unless you're transferring a lot of experience (especially with the higher piety cost of experience transfer).

Ash is for power-gamers. There isn't enough for a normal player, since all the power he grants is like Chei, but taken to a new level.

When Crawl wants to kill your character, there's nearly nothing you can do.

I had a very promising Deep Elf Wizard.
I finished cleaning Dungeon:8 and decided to go to Dungeon:9

in D:9 the zone i was in was a bit too open for me (no wall providing protection) and there was a few Orcs, an Orc Warrior, an Orc Wizard and an Orc Priest at some distance.

While the first 3 enemies would be no problem for my legions of Imps (killed a few of those Orcs in D:8 and D:7), i remember that Orc Priests always target and smite only my characters and ignore the other enemies around (having lost many characters in the same kind of situation).

So instead of some stupid hubris killing my character again, i moved back to D:8 to find a better stair to D:9, better safe than sorry, especially in Crawl.

Went to another stair and moved to Dungeon:9 again.
And there on the same turn in which i entered this other zone of D:9, Erolcha at some distance just threw a lightning bolt on my character :
Code: [Select]
The bolt of lightning hits you!
Ouch! That really hurt!
* * * LOW HITPOINT WARNING * * *

As i was on the stairs i pressed the key to move back to D:8, but unfortunately, pressing the go up/go down apparently either make me lose a turn or give a free turn to the monsters, Dowan decided to shoot too (he was the other side of the screen in comparison to Erolcha with me at the screen center) :
Code: [Select]
There is a stone staircase leading up here.
Dowan gestures at you while chanting.
The puff of frost hits you! You feel a terrible chill!
You die...

Code: [Select]
  8351 | D:9     | Noticed Duvessa
  8351 | D:9     | Noticed Dowan
  8351 | D:9     | Noticed Erolcha
  8352 | D:9     | Killed from afar by Dowan

Code: [Select]
2252 Guo the Summoner (level 8, -8/35 HPs)
Began as a Deep Elf Wizard on Apr 18, 2011.
             Was a Follower of Vehumet.
Killed from afar by Dowan (10 damage)
... with a puff of frost

... on Level 9 of the Dungeon.
The game lasted 00:46:52 (8352 turns).

As my character was at full health and the puff of frost did only 10 damage, Erolcha lighting bolt much have done 33 damage.
Ouch.

I wish i didn't wasted my only Blink scroll in D:2 when i was testing the ones i found, though i'm sure it would have not saved my character with the bad luck i had in this situation.

If you tried, Crawl would have probably been insulted and spawn Prince Ribbit for you wherever you appeared. :-p

If they were on opposite sides of the room, blinking would have either have had Lightning lady zap you up close, or Dowan zapping you. You MIGHT have had success blinking to the square directly adjacent to Dowan to make him melee you, but I doubt it. Trying to go back up was the right choice in that case.
