I think a major factor in this success was my tendence to perform expeditious retreats at the SLIGHTEST hint of trouble with this character, instead of rushing forward spells blazing.
The key to victory.  That and getting spells to help you do that (think Controlled Blink).

Does magic get very powerful later?
...If you're conjuring and not an Earth Elementalist or Air Elementalist, it should be pretty strong from the start?

Even as an EE or AE, you start pretty strong, especially as an EE in trunk. AE's get Shock, which is weaker then other spells, but bounces so it can hit several times. EE's got a lot of buffs in trunk.

Oh, I guess in trunk EEs are fine too.  AE isn't too bad if you bounce Shock and kite a lot with your speed enhancers, but I think you could be forgiven for saying it lacks "power".

I've found Air Elementalists weak. Mostly because shock misses a lot of the time. That means that they can die early to a hob because it's not impossible to see all their blasts miss.

PD: I think I'm in trouble.

Is it some kind of typo, or have the devs skipped 0.8 and are now releasing builds in trunk at version 0.9 ?

...casting usually either kills things nearly instantenously, giving me no XP for my weapon of choice...

I'm not sure if I understand your problem here. Could you clarify this a bit?

It missing a lot is fixed with a tiny bit of effort, since it is able to hit a enemy two or three times per cast.

Using a very recent trunk version, i played with the Sprint dungeon "Red Sonja"

In this dungeon, there's a room south of the zone in which you can find Sonja that has 2 spores just behind the door. At the time i reached that specific room, my character was a Troll Berserker level 9 and 73 health.

Before, i never had a troll berzerker dying from 2 spores at the level your character is by the time you're reaching that room.

So i opened the door, 2 explosions in the same turn (both spores) --> Troll berzerker dead.
I have no idea due to the annoying lack of information Crawl provide to the player how much damage the 1st explosion was , but the 2nd one was "40 damage" !

Code: [Select]
2465 v the Grappler (level 8, -1/73 HPs)
Began as a Troll Berserker on Apr 14, 2011.
Was a High Priest of Trog.
Killed by an exploding giant spore (40 damage)
... in the Dungeon (Sprint I: "Red Sonja").
The game lasted 00:03:26 (626 turns).
But according to that, the 1st explosion must then have been 34 damage if i ended at -1 health with the 2nd explosion.

Code: [Select]
   626 | D       | Noticed a giant spore
   626 | D       | Noticed a giant spore
   626 | D       | Defeated a giant spore
   626 | D       | Defeated a giant spore
626 | D       | Killed by an exploding giant spore

So just very bad luck in regard to the random roll regarding damage, or have the spores power been increased ?

So far so good

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm happy with this char concept. Kobold kikrusaders have many of the advantages of KoBes, if not the same start-ease. The plan is to get charms high enough to cast berserker rage reliably, and then go into necro. I keep frost blade because it's a nice buff to deal with imps, but I have abstained from fire blade or dispel undead because I can deal with most of them in regular or berserk melee anyway, and I wanted the spell points for the raise dead spell.

PD:

Stupid ogre mage spawned out of NOWHERE (literally. That room was empty one minute before that) and banished me. Got surrounded and that was it for Matxakator.

Found a randart lajatang of speed with my draconian transmuter. Sweet, now I can hit people super fast while doing unarmed combat moves in between.

Really need to find decent books though :\, I've been using dig to train earth and transmutations to nice levels but it doesn't matter if I don't get any decent books.

So, in the latest trunk, two new dzot powers were added. Summon altar, which summons a random altar, and summon grenade, which summons a spore.

Brotip: Despite it only costing 2 XP, never EVER buy more than one grenade at a time.

Doesn't the starting transmutations book come with enough good spells? Why not just use Fulsome Distillation to train Transmutation?

Yeah. Don't waste MP on Dig. Just evap all your potions to fight. The moment you forget you are first and foremost a caster is the moment you die in CQC with an Ogre.
